Pres Peter reminded members that the next meeting will be 12 January 2005. We will meet at Pamela Best’s house 1/26 Pinkerton Circuit Kambah at 6:00 for 6:15 for the President’s BBQ night. It is BYOG and seat as well. Special diets will be catered for—just let Pamela know. Help with the dishes af- terwards would be appreciated.
Embassy staff presentation Pres Peter presented floral ar- rangements to those wonderful girls Irene and Mary who make our evenings at the Embassy so enjoyable.
Thanks to all for the cake for my 70th birthday (Christmas Day). It was a delightful sur- prise. Couldn’t extinguish the candles—maybe that was a good omen! Congratulations to Alan Ford too whose birthday is also Christmas day—not quite 70 yet though! - Noel Hart
President Peter announced the Paul Harris Fellows awards for this year. Congratulations to Bruce Hall, Rex Hunt and Ros Osbourne (sapphire up- grade!)
These presentations not only honour well deserving hard working Rotarians in the Club but also represent US$1000 do- nations to Rotary Foundation.
The awarding of PHF’s once again reminds us of the found- ing member of Rotary Paul Har- ris. Paul started Rotary in 1905 when a group of business men began meeting together to dis- cuss what how they could better serve their community. These meetings rotated from place to place—thus the genesis of
“Rotary”. A characteristic of Rotary is that it mixes people of various occupations, as mem- bership is by occupation or
“classification” as we say. The wagon wheel emblem, subse- quently a geared wheel was adopted as symbolic of the na- ture of Rotary.
Well done Bruce Rex and Ros.
Guest speaker Bishop Pat Power
We were fortunate indeed to have Bishop Pat Power present this year’s Christmas message.
Pat began with the hope that the celebration of Christmas wouldn’t be stifled by the rec- ognition of multicultural icons but rather might broaden out to allow the festive occasion to also pay respect to the great days of other faiths. Pat said how impressed he was recently

Page 3 when at the multi cultura at Bar- ton he witnessed through a video the enthusiasm of 30 young people from various faiths as they joined in the reli- gious life of each other.
Pat spoke of the genesis of Christmas day and how 25th December is not universal within the Christian Church.
But whatever the day he hoped that it would give the opportu- nity to send goodwill messages to others and to amend rifts.
But Pat’s main message came from a story he told of a Tasma- nian family whose baby’s pure joy at the friendly antics of an outcast contrasted with the reac- tion of his parents who wished to avoid him. The odour, dirty clothes or condition of the out- cast was no barrier to the child’s joy. The child was welcomed in the arms of the outcast who thereupon thanked the mother.
As he handed back the child he said “God bless you, you have given me my Christmas gift.”
Rotary Information GSE past delegates
In 1998 a Group Study Ex- change delegation arrived from the USA to be hosted by our Club. Robin and I were privi- leged to host “Becky” Martin from Marylands. She is a truly wonderful person and we are
fortunate to still hear from her.
She is a very gifted individual and coaches the basketball teams at McDaniel’s College where she once attended as a student. So noteworthy was her career as a student that the col- lege inducted her into its Sports Hall of Fame without the con- sideration of her numerous coaching accomplishments.
The story is told how she ar- rived at the middle Atlantic Conference track champion- ships in 1981 as a grad assistant helping to coach while studying for her masters. She left with
her second straight gold medal in the high jump—after winning in street clothes and sneakers.
And without training for a solid year! The spur-of-the-moment decision was on orders from the head coach. She went on to be- come the most prolific basket- ball scorer and wining coach in the history of the school (founded in 1867).—Noel Hart
