CHAPTER III METHODOLOGY 3.1 Research Method

In this thesis, descriptive qualitative method is applied because the result of this thesis will describes the use of Illocutionary act in the movie entitled Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Bogdan and Taylor (1975:5) define qualitative method as research procedure to gain the descriptive data which is fulfilled with written or spoken language from a certain source that will be observed.

According to Moleong (1994:6), “Deskriptif menjadi salah satu ciri pada metode penelitian kualitatif di mana data yang dikumpulkan berupa kata-kata/kalimat dan gambar. Sehingga, pada laporan penelitiannya berisi kutipan-kutipan untuk memberikan ilustrasi dari laporan penelitian. Data bisa berupa novel, dialog, wawancara, foto-foto, rekaman, dokumen pribadi dan dokumen sah lainnya”.

It means that the research aim is to describe all the facts as it is without any subjective improvisation.

3.2 Data Collecting Method

The data are collected by applying the library research method. The data are collected from utterances of the main characters of Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl movie, Jack Sparrow which is focused on the illocutionary act. Firstly, the movie is watched. Then the Script of the movie was obtained from the Internet. Next, the utterances of Jack Sparrow will be marked to be analyzed using descriptive qualitative method and then will be classified into the Illocutionary act category.

3.3 Data Analysis Method

Some steps that are used to analyze the data are as follows:

1. Collecting the data: picking out all the utterance of the main character of the film from the movie script that was obtained from the internet.

2. Classifying the data: classifying the utterancebased on the scope of the analysis.

3. Identifying the data: characterizing the utterances that belong to one of the classifications of illocutionary act by using theory of Yule (1996:53).

CHAPTER IV

ANALYSIS AND FINDING 4.1 Data Analysis

After collecting the data from the movie script, 169 utterances of Jack Sparrow that fulfill the criteria of illocutionary act had been found. The utterances are analyzed to determine the classifications of Illocutionary act. There are five classifications of Illocutionary act;they are Directive, Commissive, Representative, Declarative, and Expressive.

4.1.1 Directive Illocutionary act

1. “How could it be that two upstanding gentlemen such as yourselves did not merit

an invitation?”

ANALYSIS: The utterance is classified into directive illocutionary act because there is an intended meaning to be delivered by the speaker in the form of suggestion. Jack and two guards of a dock are the participants involved in aconversation where Jack as the speaker and the guards as the hearers. When the utterance occurred, Jack was intercepted by the guards when he was passing a dock so he tried to deceive them by telling that there was a ceremony in a fort which was not far from the dock. The purpose of the utterance was toput forward consideration for the guards to join the ceremony in the fort.

2. “Will you be saving her then?”

ANALYSIS: The utterance is classified into Directive illocutionary act because there is an intended meaning to be delivered by the speaker in the form of order. Jack and two guards of a dock are the participants involved in aconversation where Jack as the speaker and the guards as the hearers. When the utterance occurred, Jack and the guards were talking in a dock when suddenly they were surprised by a woman who was drowning into the sea. Jack asked the guards to rescue the woman but they refused it so he decided to rescue her himself. Before jack dived into the sea to rescue the drowning woman he gave his equipments to the guards. The purpose of the utterance was togive the guards an instruction to keep Jack’s equipments safe when he was rescuing the drowning woman.

4. “Move!”

ANALYSIS: The utterance is classified into Directive illocutionary act because there is an intended meaning to be delivered by the speaker in the form of order. Jack and two guards of a dock are the participants involved in aconversation where Jack as the speaker and the guards as the hearers. When the utterance occurred, Jack had saved a woman from drowning in the sea and took her back to the dock with help of one of the guards. The woman was unconscious so Jack tried to wake her up. The purpose of the utterance was togive the guards an instruction to give Jack space so he could wake the woman up.

5. “Captain Jack Sparrow, if you please, sir.”

When the utterance occurred, Jack was caught by Norrington and revealed his identity as a pirate, but Jack was not pleased because he wasn’t a common pirate, but a captain of a ship. The purpose of the utterance was to made a polite request to Norrington to mentioned Jack’s name correctly by using ”captain” title.

6. “Commodore Norrington, my effects, please, and my hat.”

ANALYSIS: The utterance is classified into Directive illocutionary act because there is an intended meaning to be delivered by the speaker in the form of request. Jack and Norrington are the participants involved in aconversation where Jack as the speaker and Norrington as the hearer. When the utterance occurred, jack threatened Norrington who wanted to catch him by wrapping a chain on a woman’s throat. Jack was planning to escape from the dock but he didn’t want to leave his equipments. The purpose of the utterance was toask Norrington politely to bring Jack’s equipments back before he went to escape.

7. “So, if you’ll excuse me…”

Jack and William are the participants involved in aconversation where Jack as the speaker and William as the hearer. When the utterance occurred, William was preventing Jack from escape through his workshop by pointing his sword to Jack. The purpose of the utterance was to gave a statement for William that indicated a danger if he challenged Jack in sword fighting.

9. “You need to find yourself a girl, mate!”

ANALYSIS: The utterance is classified into Directive illocutionary act because there is an intended meaning to be delivered by the speaker in the form of suggestion. Jack and William are the participants involved in aconversation where Jack as the speaker and William as the hearer. When the utterance occurred, Jack and William were fighting in a workshop. Jack was curious because there were so many weapons in the workshop and William told Jack that he was the person who made all of the weapons and practice with them three hours a day. The purpose of the utterance was toput forward consideration for William to search a woman so he could spend his time with her than with all of his swords.

Jack remembered that there was a dog which brought the cell’s key so he lured the dog using a bone. The purpose of the utterance was tomake a friendly request for the dog to get closer to Jack.

12.“It’s just you and me now. It’s you and old Jack”

ANALYSIS: The utterance is classified into Directive illocutionary act because there is an intended meaning to be delivered by the speaker in the form of suggestion. Jack and a dog are the participants involved in aconversation where Jack as the speaker and a dog as the hearer. When the utterance occurred, Jack was trying to escape from a cell. Jack remembered that there was a dog which brought the cell’s key so he lured the dog using a bone and tried not to scare it. The purpose of the utterance was toput forward consideration for the dog not to being afraid of getting closer to him.

13.“Worry about your own fortunes, gentlemen. The deepest circle of Hell is

reserved for betrayers and mutineers”

where Jack as the speaker and the others as the hearers. When the utterance occurred, Jack’s was sitting in a cell corner when his enemies were encountering him. Jack’s enemies were surprised for seeing Jack was still alive because they had betrayed and left him to die in a forsaken island. The purpose of the utterance was togive Koehler and Twigg a statement that indicated a danger about their betrayal.

14.“Get me out.”

ANALYSIS: The utterance is classified into Directive illocutionary act because there is an intended meaning to be delivered by the speaker in the form of order. Jack and William are the participants involved in aconversation where Jack as the speaker and William as the hearer. When the utterance occurred, Jack offered a help for William in rescuing his beloved woman named Elizabeth by asking a requirement to free Jack from a cell and William agreed the requirement. The purpose of the utterance was togive William an instruction to break the cell door so Jack could be free.

ANALYSIS: The utterance is classified into Directive illocutionary act because there is an intended meaning to be delivered by the speaker in the form of warning. Jack and Gillette are the participants involved in aconversation where Jack as the speaker and Gillette as the hearer. When the utterance occurred, Jack and William planned to take over a ship named The Dauntless. Jack ordered Gillette and other ship crews not to prevent him from taking over the ship but Gillette was not scared and laughed at him instead and then Jack took out his pistol and pointed it at Gillette. The purpose of the utterance was to gave a statement for Gillette that indicated a danger if he prevented Jack from taking over the ship.

17.“Put it away, son. It’s not worth you getting beat again.”

ANALYSIS: The utterance is classified into Directive illocutionary act because there is an intended meaning to be delivered by the speaker in the form of prohibition. Jack and William are the participants involved in aconversation where Jack as the speaker and William as the hearer. When the utterance occurred, Jack was steering the ship when he told William that his father was a pirate. But Jack’s words made William angry, so he pointed his sword at Jack with the intention of challenging Jack to fight, but Jack was not interested because William would be lost again. The purpose of the utterance was torefuse to allow William for challenging Jack to fight. 18.“Now, as long as you’re just hanging there, pay attention.”

When the utterance occurred, Jack was walking with William in a town named Tortuga and told him that the place was so exciting. The purpose of the utterance was toask William politely to give his opinion about Tortuga. 20.“Keep a sharp eye.”

When the utterance occurred, Jack wanted to talk with Gibbs privately in a bar because the bar is fully crowded and jack was afraid of being disturbed. The purpose of the utterance was togive William an instruction to guard Jack and Gibss when they are talking.

Jack and Gibbs are the participants involved in aconversation where Jack as the speaker and Gibbs as the hearer. When the utterance occurred, Jack told Gibbs that he needed some crew to help him in retrieving his ship named Black Pearl but Gibbs doubted Jack’s plan because it was hard to take over the ship from Barbossa. Jack told Gibbs that he had an idea to retrieve the ship and Gibbs was curious of his idea. The purpose of the utterance was toput forward consideration for Gibbs to think that Jack’s plan was about to remind Barbossa about his past.

23.“Mr. Cotton … do you have the courage and fortitude to follow orders and stay

true in the face of danger and almost certain death?”

When the utterance occurred, Jack was in a dock when recruiting some crew that would join him in sailing. Suddenly Jack encountered Mr. Cotton and he invited Mr. Cotton to join him on sailing. Mr. Cotton could not answer Jack’s question because he was a mute person so Jack tried to ask the same question to Mr. Cotton’s parrot hoping it would answer his question. The purpose of the utterance was togive Mr. Cotton’s parrot an instruction to answer Jack’s question.

William told that Jack would give a ship named Interceptor and Jack was forced to agree because he was afraid of Anamaria’s anger. The purpose of the utterance was toask Anamaria to give her opinion about the ship that Jack would give to her.

28.“It’d be far worse not to have her.”

ANALYSIS: The utterance is classified into Directive illocutionary act because there is an intended meaning to be delivered by the speaker in the form of warning. Jack and Gibbs are the participants involved in aconversation where Jack as the speaker and Gibbs as the hearer. When the utterance occurred, Jack commanded all of the crew that he had just recruited to prepare a ship for sailing. Gibbs warned Jack that it would bring a bad luck if Anamaria join them in sailing. The purpose of the utterance was to gave a statement to Gibbs that indicated a danger if Anamaria did not join them in sailing.

29.“Let go of the anchor!”

When the utterance occurred, Barbossa had succeeded to destroy a ship that used in sailing by Jack and captured him and his friends. Suddenly William appeared and he ordered Barbossa to release Elizabeth. Barbossa refuse William’s order and he wondered about why William was so brave to give him an order. The purpose of the utterance was torefuse to allow William from revealing his identity as the person who was needed by Barbossa in lifting his curse.

Barbossa refuse William’s order and he wondered about why William was so brave to give him an order. William told Barbossa that he was a son of his former crew named Billiam turner which meant that he was the person whom Barbossa need but Jack tried to deceive Barbossa instead.
