CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter of the thesis discusses some topics related to the background

of study, problem of study, purpose of study, scope and limitation, significance of the study, and definition of key terms.

1.1Background of The Study

Literature is very interesting to discuss because there are so many literary works around the world. Also, literary works is interesting because it is an

expression of human’s thought, feeling, and experience written in form of poetry, novel, and drama. According to Mario (2004: 1), literature is deferred to as the entirety of written expression, with the restriction that not every written document

can be catagorized as literature in the more exact sense of the word. It means that, it can be stated that literature means the productions of written works having

excellence of form of expression and dealing with ideas of permanent interest. Film is one of literature branches that are commonly consumed by society. Film is a small reflection of human life that is covered in an interesting audio

visual product. As what stated by Bordwell and Thompson (2008), “ Films communicate information and ideas, and they show us places and ways of life we

might not otherwise know” (p.20). Furthermore, it gives us many lesson; it also inform as many things that we may not know before.

Therefore, there is also a research conducted by M. Nabris Raunaq (2014)

several points that can be concluded about the main character’s struggle. Based on

the analysis there are many great efforts which Aibileen did in “The Help” novel. For examples, she strugglea to invite other Negro Maids to tell the true story of

white women. Another struggle is she struggles to provethe true story of Negro maids. Related to definition that Aibileen struggles to invite and to prove the true story of Negro Maids because they are the ways to getting her goals. Based on the

analysis, there are four kinds of reason of Aibileen helps Negro women maids, first, she was always insulted by Hilly. Second, most of Negro maids got low

salary. Third, negro maids were descriminated in public fasilities. Fourth, Negro maids were accused as the thief. It can be stated that Aibilieen has many reasons to help Negro maids in Jackson Missisipi. She saw much descrimination towards

Negro maids.

Therefore, there are two kinds of Aibileen’s effects toward herself and

Negro maids, namely: negative and positive effects. The first, is stress which can be found that Aibileen and her friends got stress. The second, is depression which can be found that Negro maids were threatened by white people, and the third is

fear which can found that Aibileen was fear. In the positive effects, there are two points. The first is motivation which can be found that many stores ordered books

“The Help”, and one of Negro maids were not fired by her master. The second is independence which can be found that Aibileen got a new job. Related on the effects of Aibileen’s struggle, it can be stated that many positive effects of

Aibileen got from her struggle after she and her friends got many negative effects. She can get a new job and change her future as the writer in the Jackson Journal.

her master is a good master. Therefore, most of masters is not cruel with the

Negro maids. Most of Negro maids can get much money for selling the book, and Negro maids can feel safety when they want to go every place in Jackson

Massisipi.

Wall Street” by Martin Scorsese. The movie in which it talks about struggle done by Jordan Belfort who wants to be a successful stockbroker in his work which
