Welcome Speech of Chairman of Organizing Committee

Our knowledge in biology has allowed us to achieve a better understanding of many biological phenomena and their application or exploitation in agriculture, food safety and security, industrial, medical, and environmental conservation. However, advances in applied biology ca'l also produce some negative implications, such as reducing biodiversity, the imbalance in food sources, the development of new agents of infection, and the lack of understanding of non-infectious diseases or metabolic disorders. Nevertheless, the presence of the interdisciplinary sciences such as molecular biology, bioinformatics, bio-nanotechnology, and even the relationship between biological and social biosciences, will be a very useful to help us in creating a better world. Advances in biology will be able to expand our views to be unique individuals and appreciate human biodiversity to live in peace and harmony.

International Conference on Biosciences (ICoBio) 2015 taking the theme of "Appreciating Unity in Diversity". This conference is intended to gain insight into current trends in research and teaching related to biology, such as interdisciplinary approaches that are important for understanding the biology and its applications. Moreover, to encourage the formation of networks between biologists and relevant stakeholders to accelerate our efforts to understand the biological phenomena and their applications.

The ICoBio 2015 is attended by participants from several countries including japan, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Germany, Thailand, and Indonesia. Total participants who register are 220 participants. However not all participant who register can be accepted as a presenter, so there is some participant suggested as non-presenter (attendant). Due to the wide scope of bioscience, the ICoBio 2015 topic is divided into four main groups focusing on Biodiversity, ecology, and evolution (group 1); physiological, developmental, and behavioral sciences (group 2); Molecular biology, biotechnology, and omic technology (group 3); and Applied and interdisciplinary biology (group 4).

In addition, a series of activities were also conducted before the conference begins, namely the activity of "One day lecture in Bioinformatics by Prof Rolf Daniel - Georg-August-Universitat Gi.ittingen, Germany" and mini symposium NAIST japan - IPB Bogor entitled "Symposium on Bogor Agricultural University (Indonesia) - Nara Institute of Science and Technology (Japan) Graduate Student Exchange Program". Through those activity the participants are expected to gain extensive insight regarding bioinformatic and the current techniques in modern biotechnology.

Mangosteen is a unique tropical fruit that originated from Indonesia that has a good prospect. One of the main problem is the slow rate of growth of this plant, so it is difficult to get seed. The need to produce numerous and good quality plantlet in a short time has been carried out with in vitro culture. To solve the problem is getting from callus induction by tissue culture method. The objective of this research was to find the best combination of medium and plant growth regulator for in vitro mangosteen callus induction. In vitro bud were treated with six level treatment, a) without plant growth regulator, b) 1 ppm 2,4 D, c) 1 ppm 2,4 D and 1 ppm Kinetin, d) 1 ppm 2,4 D and 0.5 ppm TDZ, e) 1 ppm Kinetin and 0.5 ppm TDZ, f) 1 ppm 2,4 D and 1 ppm Kinetin and 0.5 ppm TDZ for callus induction in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium. After five week treatment, callus is transfered to 0.5 ppm NAA + 0.2 ppm Kinetin + five concentrations of Benzyl Amino Purine (BAP) (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 ppm) . Our result show that plant growth regulator positively affected mangosteen callus induction (time of callus appearance, biomassa, colour, texture, browning). The best medium for mangosteen callus induction was found to be MS + 1 ppm Kinetin + 0.5 ppm Thidiazuron. After transfer, colour, size and texture of the callus is changes, but not for biomassa.

Key words : Mangosteen, callus, 2,4 D, TDZ, Kinetin.
