Abstract
Indonesia’s foreign policy in the 21st century has been undergoing significant transformation
after elected president Joko Widodo (Jokowi) came to power. The most prominent character of Jokowi’s foreign policy is domestic-centric oriented which stress mainly on the protection of Indonesian citizen abroad as well as improving economic development. As part of the so-called ‘middle power diplomacy’ Jokowi’s foreign relations will focus on the people’s interest with limited global participation. This paper argues that Indonesian’s new foreign policy will hinder state ambition to become a global player due to the absence of activism in international arena. The domestication of foreign policy also undermine Indonesia’s reputation as responsible rising power. This paper suggests that the new government should maintain Indonesia’s status as an emerging power with global interests by continuing activism in its foreign relations.
