What is On-the-Job Training? Also known as OJT, is teaching the skills, knowledge, and

competencies that are needed for employees to perform a specific job within the workplace and work environment. Employees learn in an environment in which they will need to practice the knowledge and skills taught in the on-the-job training. On-the-job training uses the regular or existing workplace tools, machines, documents, equipment, knowledge, and skills necessary for an employee to learn to

effectively perform his or her job. It occurs within the normal working environment that an employee experiences on the job. It may occur as the employee performs actual work, or it may occur elsewhere within the workplace using training rooms, training workstations, or training equipment. Why is it important? Learners and teachers work shoulder to shoulder and develop a feeling of pursuing the same goal when training on the job. Training becomes something not simply given to employees, but

something in which they participate. On-the-job training also improves learning retention.

My memory is still quite lucid to remember how OJT does its trick. There’s pretty an irony on saying On-The-Job-Training is more than just on the job but you cannot deny it’s true. As the program enables you to acquire new skills and invaluable knowledge, it also prepares you for your future plight in the real world of employment. It provides an avenue for self-assessment and self-enrichment, where you will get to discover your individual strengths and weaknesses, competitive advantage and limitations. But most importantly, On-The-Job-Training is a tool that molds your character and defines your future attitude towards work and career.

I am Alisha Faye M. Bailon, becomes 4th year college student this coming 1st semester. Before I

will be officially 4th year college student I am required to take On-The-Job Training in an accounting firm

or banks for preparation in working in real world after school. I am an assistant of Senior Teller in United Coconut Planters Bank (UCPB) located at #1869 Rizal Avenue West Bajac-Bajac Olongapo City. UCPB is a leading provider of financial products and services to corporations, private and government institutions, middle market companies, small and medium sized businesses and individuals in the Philippines. Established in 1963, UCPB was the first private Philippine bank to become a universal bank, obtaining its expanded commercial banking license in 1981.Today, the bank and its subsidiaries operate nationwide delivering a full range of expanded commercial banking services to a highly diversified clientele. It has strong capabilities in consumer finance, commercial credit, corporate and investment banking, trust banking, domestic and international trade finance, treasury and money market investment, cash management and deposit services. UCPB has always been at the forefront of customer service innovations. It was among the first banks to introduce an ATM service in the late 1980s. The bank has since expanded its electronic banking capability with telephone banking, internet banking and mobile banking facilities. These facilities now handle billions of pesos worth of client transactions.

teach me first how to tire some papers, run up the dollar bill then print it and high lightened the needs to fill up in creating new accounts. My first day wasn’t that good for me it’s because I’m not familiar with the employee and in the kind of work they may given to me. As the day goes by, I arranged the deposit slip by date and put the signature card in the steel cabinet. I also learned to sorting the new ATM and arranged them alphabetically. Ms. Ely also informed me that the dollar rate must be updated, because the dollar rate is changing every day. I also learned to encode the BIR form, there are different types of form so that it is important that you should know what is the different types of it and try to memorize. I participated in the normal operation of the office by doing the tasks that is assigned to me.

Since Ms. Ofelia need to resign because she will go to Japan, United Coconut Planters Bank need a new Branch Operator Officer. Ms. Weng handled it first then after a few days, she also need to go to a vacation, so my official Branch Operator Officer is Ms. Geraline Bautista. Actually, not only Ms. Ely, Ms. Ofelia, Ms. Weng and Ms. Geraline whom I met but also, I met Sir Dandy, Ms. Jen and Sir Iverg they are the sales associate. Then, in the teller I met Ms. Bianca, Ms. Bridget, Ms. Angela and Sir Iverg they are all service associate. This term I became familiar with because of Sir Dandy, and because he’s with us every day at the back office. I can say that he teaches me a lot because every time I need an answer to my questions he’s always have an answer for it. He also gave me advice and encourage us to study well. And even though he is not our Branch Operator Officer or the Immediate Supervisor, he treats me and my co-trainees well and good. I also met Manong Jes, the one who logged in and out me and the one who’s in charge in our Daily Time Record (DTR). We talked a lot about the previous OJT in their bank. Over all it was fun and grateful to meet people that would share their knowledge and experiences that will help me to have an idea and to grow as well. I can say, I'm happy and fulfilled, being a part of UCPB. I could probably say that I really learned a lot of things here. From the moment I set my feet on this place, I know I will be facing different challenges on being a part of this company but at the same time I know that I will learn new things regarding the possible work that I will be doing in the company.

In my stay at United Coconut Planters Bank, I can say that I learned to became independent because I do my task alone and I challenge myself to communicate to others with confidence. I also share my knowledge to others for some purposes. I became strong to ask questions when I need to. I also learned to manage my time. During my training, I learned to interact and get socialized with other people. I know that people have different individuality and attitudes’, however making friends with my co-trainee and in the staffs and officers doesn’t make difficult. They don’t treat me like others. One of the most important things I’ve learned is that talent alone is not enough. It is important, but it is no guarantee of success. One must also be hardworking and should practice self-discipline. Sacrifice is important, too. I’ve learned a lot of things in just 300 hours of on the job training but I’ve noticed that there are still other things that I must improve one of it is my verbal communication. Nervousness and shyness are always when it’s you’re first time. For many reason, and lot of stuff playing on my mind. Such, I do not know the people in the office; and I do not have any actual experience. That made me quiet at first. Trying to observe on how to get along with the employee. There are times that I’m having a hard time on expressing myself, my thought with others because I don’t exactly know how am I going to say it in a way that the listener could easily understand it and get my point. I was able to learned how to accept small or big mistakes. I know sometimes I will fail and get criticized. But I take it as a challenge, to improve more, and to move forward instead of pushing myself backwards.

to be respectful especially to those on the higher position, to socialize and build a harmonious

relationship with other employees, to persevere and be patient, to be cautious in all the works that I do, to be humble and always eager to learn, and many more.

Experience is the best teacher and nothing compares to the knowledge that it can give to us. It may be hard at first, but once we learn to appreciate and love what we’re doing, it became easier and easier every day. In the beginning, working with people you have just first met is something different and something that is hard inside. Hard inside that you can't say anything or do anything that you are usually saying because the near fact that you might offend them or they may think you’re rude. Having an OJT experience is very important. It gives me a lot of exciting and priceless memories. I have developed as a trainee to follow strictly on instructions to ensure that the process is properly sequence. Ask question, if required, to clarify your understanding about things and this prevent you for incurring errors. I can say that I gained to work effectively and competently in the organization. I improve my self confidence in socializing to people. I have the initiative in doing something. I’ve learned to be flexible, because culture is always changing, thus impacting the business model and corporate culture as well. In my 300 hours of On-The-Job Training I can say that the course I enrolled is exactly where I want and I will probably stay in this profession for as long job opportunities are present.

With the education, I have imparted by United Coconut Planters Bank, I see myself 5 years from now to be a smart, responsible and independent woman in a stable job, holding an accountable position in a respectable company who value my existence and will work in much better way, because of well-known conditions, and settled atmosphere, which helps to the growth of the organization. I will be an asset to the company which I work with. I see myself socializing to my co-workers. Having a strong academic knowledge given by United Coconut Planters Bank I see myself fulfilling my dreams in the future.
