ABSTRACS
This research aims at studying form, meaning, ideology and corre1ation among implicd idcologics in custom-titlc inaugurating tradition towards marricd man to-bc in spccch ccrcmony
of Pasambahan Batagak Gala in Minangkabau. The rcscarch fulfillcd the aim by applying the
theory of Roland Barthes' s semiology. This theory, also called mythology theory.
The investigation describe the title inaugurating ceremony as a myth in Roland Barthes term. The inquiry followed several steps. i.e.. recording or.tl corpus. reducing the ural data into written from (transcription) with its trans1ation" describing the speech ceremony of Pasambahan Batagak Gala in textua1 and nontextua1 technique, and analyzing the text scmiologycally. The analyis of scmiology stcps for, firstly, identifying mythologically signified units (verbal and nonverbal), secondly, identifying mythological concepts and signifiers as intention of ceremony holders, thirdly, identifying the ideological implication among signified and signifier.
In term of meaning, the research shows that speech ceremony of Pasamhahan Batagak
Gala implicated that Minangkabaunese people advocated the custom-title inaugurdting and
legitimed the tit1e inaugurating by matrilineal ru1e. In term of form, the ceremony implicated the patrilinea1 code subversion in matri1ineal Minangkabau society.
