Belajar berbasis proyek adalah sebuah metode pengajaran yang memberikan siswa tugas-tugas kompleks berdasarkan pertanyaan menantang atau masalah yang melibatkan proses pemecahan masalah, pengambilan keputusan,keterampilan investigasi, dan
refeksi yang difasilitasi tetapi tidak untuk diarahkan oleh guru utama dan prinsip-prinsip dasar dalam metode melakukannya secara langsung (hands-on).
Menurut (Barron & Darling-Hammond, 2008; Thomas, 2000), pembelajaran berbasis proyek pada dasarnya melibatkan hal sebagai berikut berikut:
Siswa mempelajari suatu pengetahuan untuk mengatasi masalah yang realistis karena mereka akan memecahkan masalah di dunia nyata
Siswa akan meningkatkan kontrol atas proses pembelajaran yang dilakukannya.
Guru bertindak sebagai pelatih dan fasilitator penyelidikan dan refeksi
