Message from the Chairperson of
Executive Committee
Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Noh bin Dalimin
Vice Chancellor of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia
Assalamualaikum WTH WBT and sincere greetings to all,
I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the Centre of Co-Curricular, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia and Universitas Gadjah Mada for their hard work in realizing this event. It is my pleasure to welcome and thank the participants from Malaysia and Indonesia, who have taken their precious time to participate in this conference. It is truly a good practice to let both universities and the society around us to closely collaborate, and of course it is a unique feeling when the opportunity arises and we get the opportunity to host this fantastic event.
International Conference on Community Service 2016 (ICCS2016) is a platform to share the experience in community service activities. The problems in the community have been explored and further solved. There are challenges that have been explored encompass the scope of geography, economy, social and education.
As I prepared my comments to impress upon participants the many reasons why community service is such a worthy activity and so important for the times in which we live. I considered what builds character and integrity. I thought about faith the importance of recognizing that life is bigger than just we and our everyday concerns. In community service, we work with all in need, regardless of their race, religion, gender, nationality or political opinion. The mission that mainly supported by young people may be lofty, but with everybody help, it is attainable.
xiv
In Islam there is a strong ethic related to community service activity. This does not simply extend to running study circles or fundraising for the mosque. As Muslims, we see our role as world citizens. The idea of working for a better society or community shouldn’t be limited to the Muslim community but should extend to the broader non-Muslim community as well. Because we live in that community too, whatever weaknesses are present affect us also.
The uniqueness of this conference when it is also involves the culture exchange through the cuisine workshop. This shows that a borderless culture exchange can be realized using informal education. Therefore, I hope this conference will serve as a gateway to share the knowledge, experience and association among the participants.
With the cooperation and input especially from these conferences participants, I hope to see more activities that could be help the community who is needed.

Message from the Chairperson of
Executive Committee
Prof. Ir. Dr. Dwikorita Karnawati
Rector of Universitas Gadja Mada
Bismillahirrahmanirrahim
Assalamualaikum Wr. Wb.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Rahayu.

Abstract
At the dry seasons 2015, there was a peat fire disaster that affected to great smoke at Tumbang Nusa, Jabiren Raya, Pulang Pisau, and Central Kalimantan. Many students from Elementary School to Senior High school of that district have vacuum activities of education at school due to impacted by the smoke. The school's temporary stop from the education activities during the smoke disaster, and school has allowed the students for staying at home. Unfortunately, by having an unexpected holiday at home, the student didn’t want to perform the homeschooling for about three months. To avoid the backwardness of education for the six grade of an elementary school student and third grade of junior high school students which will perform the national examination, Universitas Gadjah Mada has sent 20 undergraduate students for Student Community Service Learning /Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) program. The KKN has designed to give extra learning period to support students in faces the National Examination. The Student Community Services activities of Gadah Mada University has a good and positive response from the community as well as the schools where they performed the special education for the elementary and Junior High Schools students. This opportunity has given them some experience for living in the rural area with limited of clean water, and hopefully, can improve the soft skills of the Gadjah Mada University student. To understand the society condition in a peat area, they have to live together for more than a month. The elementary student has inspired by Gadjah Mada University Student during performing KKN to gain their dream in the future to be an excellent person to develop their country.

Introduction
Adventure of Humanity
Kalimantan Island, which is the largest forest in the world, plays as an oxygen reserves and production and
usually called as “the lung of the world.” As an island with a land area that not equal to the number of population, Kalimantan Island often faces a problem in infrastructure and human development. Especially, in the villages region which is located far away from the city access 1. The location that is far away from developed area, exacerbated by peat soil conditions which have characters a high flammable during the dry season and easily flooded during the rainy season is typical of some Kalimantan Island region. In summer 2015, there have been peat fires in Tumbang Nusa Village, Subdistrict Jabiren Raya, Pulang Pisau District, The Province of Central Kalimantan, was the area with the worst exposure to the smoke from a peat fire. It has been effected in the teaching and learning processes in schools, both in elementary school, junior high school, and senior high school, which had to be stalled for a moment for safety reason. With the aim to help the student to improve the education, and to catch up lessons caused by exposure to smoke, especially the students who will undergo to the National Examination (UN), The Student Community Service Learning or “Kuliah Kerja Nyata-Peduli
Bencana” (KKN-PB) Universitas Gadjah Mada has deployed on 11 November 2015 and implement activities to
increase learning process during a month at KKN location.
Peat soil is mostly covered by “kelakai” plant or ferns (a flowerless plant that has feathery or leafy fronds and reproduces by spores released from the undersides of the fronds) during the dry season. It becomes a highly vulnerable land at that moment. Along the Trans-Kalimantan Road which passes Tumbang Nusa region, by a truck headed to Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan has caused peat fires. Some cases of fires that occurred in Tumbang Nusa caused by cigarette butts discarded by a driver in the dry season.
In addition, the residents who burn municipal waste, or land clearing activities are included as a small suspected as the source of peat fires. According to the opinion from one of the community leader at Tumbang Nusa (Mr. Ekung who is the teacher of SMPN 2 Jabiren Raya) said that the fire happened in 2015 was purely due to the long dry season which normally wet peat soil becomes very dry and flammable 3.
Materials and Methods
The activities of Student Community Service Learning (Kuliah Kerja Nyata) were performed by observing and researching the area of past smoke disaster in which used as the KKN location. The Team has also observing the daily life of the surrounding community. The team found that the Society has been able to move as usual. Moreover, the teams has inquired to the community about their health condition after smoke disaster and the almost all declared to be fine. However, due to the negative effects of smoked peat fires will be felt after a long period, the community should be vigilant and always obey the orders from the local government. At the first time, the KKN team came to the site, the enthusiasm of residents was quite big. It was due to in every year the KKN students who were perfomed activities at Tumbang Nusa was student from the University of Palangkaraya. Moreover, until now, there has never been KKN that comes from the island of Java and it greets the local community. The Society has welcomes to the arrival of KKN team from UGM by giving a local food and even by giving vegetables such as kelakai for to be cooked on a next-day. Warmth of welcome community was continues with the frequent giving to the KKN UGM Team for some dishes from one residents to eat together in the shelter.
The first experience of Tim KKN-PB UGM heading to one of the hamlets, located at quite far and down from the location of the Team CCN-PB UGM lodging house. The road is still quite difficult to pass, because it is still largely in the form of mud and requires travel up to 3 kilometers. Morover, the other 3 kilometers must be reached by motor cycle via the Trans Kalimantan road. Once arrived, The KKN UGM team directly addressed the residents along the road and stop at the stalls to socialize. Furthermore, the team gathered with Tumbang Nusa children in front of Tumbang Nusa 1 Public Elementary School, and make introductions followed by games that could be attract the student’s attention. The team has also took the time to join together with the people around, to play volleyball in regularly which held every afternoon in the village.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Involvement in Society Activities

Moreover, the children also like to play and learn how to spell the puzzle provided by the KKN-PB Team in the shelter. They has also play volleyball with residents, or playing soccer with the students during leisure and holiday period. Some of the members of the KKN Team also often performed maghrib and isha prayers in the mosque, serve as khotip on the Friday prayer, as well as teaching the Qur’an to the children in Tumbang Nusa. The team with the involvement of citizens closely. Especially with children around huts and mosques.
Activities in the school.
For teaching activities in Jabiren Raya 1 & 2 Public Junior High School, KKN PB UGM Team has focused in the field of giving education. The strongest reasons that local residents that are not disturbed by the smoke, they can continue the living. In addition, to those who already aware of the ways of tackling the fog along with wildfire smoke has also adviced by local police.

Teaching is not confined to fill an empty classroom but also focused on additional classes for both 7, 8 and 9 grades. At the second week, the team has focused on the additional classes for Jabiren Raya 1 Public Junior High School to provide practice in answer the questions from the previous year National Exam, besides re-explain the material which teachers delivered to the students. The system in teaching by a team quite different from that performed by the teacher. Teachers in the Jabiren Raya 2 Junior High School wanted for one person from the KKN-BP Team member holds only one subject. There was one of the team members asked to teach Indonesian language for 7, 8 and 9 grade. However, it turned out to learn the Indonesian language here was much difficult than they learn mathematics or other exact science. This was caused by the Dayak language they use is too often. Moreover, when writing and reading book, they still somewhat using a mixture language, and they are quite difficult to understand Indonesian contained in the questions. In addition, the team also become a guide gymnastics routine at school usually held in every Friday. Some of other team members has also teach scouts in every school on Friday.
The other program which performed by the team was Procurement for Environmental Hygiene Facilities. The schools are mostly neglected by both the environment and facilities owned. There were not so many bins are provided in the school, even in elementary school in the village the bottom there is no trashcan at all. Then the second program conducted by the KKN-PB UGM Team after improving education was the improvement for the health and environment quality.

The team provides a trash can as well be used to burn garbage, as one form of fire prevention for burning rubbish in each school according to the number required. The team also provides medical aid for every Unique Medical School, and also handover donation of medicines to the health center in the Tumbang Nusa village. The guidance regarding to the waste in school frequent fires, they also routinely undergo annual floods at every beginning of the year. To prevent that, than to procure a dumpster, the team also actively conducts outreach to students in junior high and elementary schools to dispose of waste in place. Public awareness of Tumbang Nusa village to dispose of waste in place, it is still quite low. Many citizens are not aware of the environment. The availability to dispose of waste in place, process and organize collectively garbage is still minimal. To be able to do counseling to residents, is still hard to do because of traditions and customs that have been done over the years. Therefore, the team decided to reach out to local students who are still likely to be directed and a lot can be an example in his home. Explanation is inserted in the lesson or when interacting with their usual, the team also used himself as a good example for the students and residents setempat.
Difficulties in performing the program
for the team to get off from the truck and push it together. Access to the Kampoeng Bawah village which lies Tumbang Nusa 1 Public Elemntary School actually easier to get klotok to reach by boat, but the boat can only carry five people at a cost of Rp. 60.000. While the members[NAF2] of Team KKN PPM UGM should go teach to SMPN 1 Jabiren Kingdom must use pickups because of remoteness which is about 21 kilometers, sometimes team-PB KKN UGM using the motor 3 units to go teach. The biggest perceived obstacle is the weather which is often a huge rain and lightning in the open space, with potential to cause flooding in the area around the village of tumbles Nusa. For several times, Tumbang Nusa also experienced power outages by PLN for electricity poles many drop, so Tim difficulty getting water to be taken by using a jet pump. In addition peatlands affect water quality in the shelter, where the water a reddish brown that is not feasible in consumption, so the team had to buy drinking water refill for purposes memasakdan daily consumption. Air peat cause some students have skin disorders. In addition, from our work program that outlines the theme of education was often disrupted by the behavior of local teachers are more precisely invited us to eat together at the time we were supposed to teach, so that many classes were left empty, while Tim could not resist demand for teachers. The teachers also tend to use their students to buy a box of drinks, refill gallon, even carrying cooking utensils such as pots, and it is done at the time of the learning process mengajar.Perilaku thus deserves to be unfortunate, because the time and effort students wasted when in fact they've missed quite a lot of lessons during disasters haze. 5. Network partnership and community participation KKN Disaster Care Team is partnering with a number of parties to deliver assistance, including the assessment of the roar of the team (Disaster Response Unit), aid medicine from the University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, and bantuan funds from a number of parties to support the path of learning programs in Tumbang Nusa PB. Head Tumbang Nusa supporting the course of the program, a lot to give assistance to the entire team. Parties to the village and district heads are very cooperative to support the path of learning programs Disaster Care.
Figure 5. Farewell ceremony with the teachers of Jabiren Raya 1 Public Junior High School
The village (village chief and his staff) are very cooperative in supporting ongoing learning programs. Transportation assistance and loans in the form of a lift motor to commute to the schools during the implementation of the program supported by Mr. Ebeng, Mr. Ekung, Mr. Yudi and Mr. Dio as the village and the villagers of Tumbang Nusa. II.
Conclusion
it was a little. On the other hand KKN UGM-PB is also useful for students who serve the community as a life experience, which also teaches us to be grateful to all the facilities and services that we feel in the big cities. The villages are rarely accessed by the government is still very much, and tumbles Nusa only one of which we could visit. With a very short time, we completed our work program as possible and contribute to the community about the importance of education for children to shape their future, and improve their village. ADVICE haze and flooding are the main obstacles in the development of Tumbang Nusa. This condition should be addressed jointly by the citizens to obey the rule of order of the existing environment. Counseling already done so only need awareness and daily banking community only. And hopefully it does not become a barrier for students to carry out education, with a record of the teaching staff is not lazing in teaching their students, also demonstrated her dedication to education in order to promote Tumbang Nusa independently. As a result of bad weather and difficult access roads, most of the teaching staff are reluctant to go down to the village below, especially when it rains then Insist schools. And if in the schools in general, the rain should not hinder the learning process to be closed all day. Procurement of better road access, as well as public transport for residents who can reach distant places is very necessary. In addition, it is also necessary additional facilities for SDN 1 Bereng Kajang, tumbles Nusa SDN 1 and SMPN 2 Jabiren highway because of the difficulty the government reach them. Limitations of teaching and learning facilities such as laboratories, computer rooms to book packages for the boys are very noteworthy. Eager to learn some children is very high, but no help is obtained from the government. Teachers often do not sign and limited their access to obtain individual packages book really difficult students to get better education and catch up with schools in the big cities.
