Geneva Emotional Music Scale (GEMS-45)
Information for Researchers
The GEMS-45 is, to our knowledge, the first instrument that has been specifically devised to measure musically evoked emotions. In the overwhelming majority of studies on music and emotions, researchers use multipurpose emotion or mood rating scales derived from the basic emotion model (e.g., happy, sad, fearful, angry) or from the dimensional approach to affect (e.g., valence, arousal; see Zentner & Eerola, 2009). We started our work with a simple question: Are these traditional approaches sufficient for capturing the range of emotions typically evoked by music? As shown in our work, music induces a much more nuanced range of emotive states than the traditional approaches imply (Zentner et al., 2008). More specifically, the GEMS-45 contains 45 labels that proved to be consistently chosen for describing musically evoked emotive states across a relatively wide range of music and listener samples. Moreover, we found that these states can be grouped into 9 different categories. Thus, the GEMS is composed of nine emotional scales. As demonstrated in our research (Zentner et al., 2008), the GEMS accounts for ratings of music-evoked emotions more powerfully than multi-purpose scales that are based on non-musical areas of emotion research.
Two caveats should be kept in mind. First, the GEMS is an instrument to measure felt emotion. Its value in assessing perceived or recognized emotion in music needs to be studied in more depth (see Zentner et al., Appendix C). Second, due to the novelty of this work, neither the emotion labels nor the groupings should be seen as conclusive. As research progresses some alterations may be necessary. To fill potential gaps, participants may also be encouraged to add terms they think are missing from the list (see instructions). We are very interested in hearing about findings and publications relating to the GEMS-45; or its shorter versions, the GEMS-25 and the GEMS-9.

Instructions

Judul penelitian:
Perbedaan Emosi Musikal pada Individu dengan Preferensi Musik Jazz
dan Musik Rock saat diperdengarkan Musik Jazz dan Musik Rock.

Pendahuluan
Emosi musikal merupakan istilah yang digunakan untuk emosi yang
dibangkitkan oleh musik. Dalam kehidupan sehari-hari musik sangat
jarang didengarkan secara tunggal. Musik didengarkan sambil melakukan
aktivitas lainnya. Musik yang didengarkan pun berbeda antara satu
individu dengan yang lainnya. Preferensi merupakan salah satu hal yang
membedakan individu dalam memilih musik yang didengar. Ketika musik
yang didengar tidak sesuai dengan preferensi individu maka akan
menimbulkan emosi yang tidak menyenangkan. Sehingga peneliti ingin
mengetahui perbedaan emosi musikal pada individu dengan preferensi
musik tertentu saat mendengarkan genre musik tertentu.

Hipotesis

Ada perbedaan emosi musikal pada individu yang memiliki preferensi
musik jazz dan musik rock.
b.
Ada perbedaan emosi musikal pada individu yang diperdengarkan jenis
musik jazz dan musik rock.

Variabel
a.
Emosi Musikal
Merupakan keadaan pada diri individu yang ditandai dengan perubahan
subjective feeling
yang dirasakan individu yang diukur dengan
menggunakan skala emosi musikal yakni GEMS.
b.
Preferensi Musik
Merupakan kecenderungan seseorang lebih menyukai satu jenis musik
(jazz atau rock) tertentu dibandingkan jenis musik yang lainnya yang
diukur dengan kusioner preferensi musik.
c.
Genre Musik
Merupakan pengelompokan sebuah musik dengan membedakan melodi,
irama, wanrna nada, dinamik, harmoni, susunan, dan bentuk yang mana
dalam penelitian ini menggunakan genre musik jazz dan musik rock.
PROSEDUR EKSPERIMEN
1.
Seluruh partisipan memasuki ruangan eksperimen yang telah diketahui
preferensi musiknya.
2.
Prolog dari peneliti
Eksperimenter membagikan skala dan alat tulis serta memastikan
skala yang diberikan dalam keadaan tertutup dan partisipan tidak
diperbolehkan membuka skala tersebut sebelum ada instruksi dari
eksperimenter.
3.
Eksperimenter memberikan aba-aba bahwa musik akan diperdengarkan.
Instruksi:
“ Selamat sore saudara
-saudara sekalian. Dalam waktu beberapa
saat lagi akan diperdengarkan sebuah lagu. Selama lagu tersebut
diperdengarkan, saudara diharapkan mendengarkannya baik-baik. Saya
telah membagikan selembar kertas yang berisi sejumlah pernyataan.
Bacalah petunjuk pengisian yang dibagian atas pada kertas tersebut.
* Berikanlah penilaian pada salah satu pilihan yang tersedia di
sebelah kanan setiap pernyataan,
berkaitan dengan apa yang Saudara
