Adapun sumber air untuk memenuhi kebutuhan fasilitas penunjang pabrik yakni dari air tanah dari sumur dalam Pupuk Kaltim, pengambilan air tanah (potable) dari sumur dalam yang digunakan oleh Pupuk Kaltim memiliki surat izin pengusahaan air tanah (SIPA) yang diterbitkan Dinas Penanaman Modal dan Pelayanan Terpadu Satu Pintu Prov. Kaltim atas rekomendasi Dinas Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral Prov. Kaltim dan DLH Kota Bontang. Selama tahun 2023 pengambilan air tanah sebesar 3.446.026 m3, air tanah tersebut digunakan untuk keperluan domestik bukan produksi pabrik, seperti perkantoran pusat dan perkantoran pabrik, dermaga, rumah sakit, masjid, perumahan karyawan, dan CSR bagi warga buffer zone. Di mana penyaluran air tanah tersebut dilengkapi dengan jaringan dan sistem pipa distribusi, dilakukan frekuensi monitoring (flow meter) dan penggantian keran dari tipe ulir menjadi tipe on off. Berdasarkan pengukuran dengan flow meter, pada tahun 2023 total air laut yang diambil untuk proses desalinasi sebesar 61.078.549 (2022: 62.564.591 m3), dan menjadi produk desal desalinasi thermal dan desalinasi RO sebesar 6.267.796 m3 (2022: 6.130.029 m3) atau 33,60% (2022: 33,83%).
Sebagian kecil dari jumlah tersebut diambil untuk digunakan sebagai air proses sistem air pendingin. Pupuk Kaltim menggunakan sistem once through, yakni seluruh air hasil pertukaran panas pada peralatan pabrik langsung dialirkan ke laut sehingga sumber air tidak terpengaruh secara signifikan.
Berdasarkan data konservasi dan keanekaragaman hayati laut Direktorat Jenderal Pengelolaan Ruang Laut Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan, Selat Makassar bukan merupakan kawasan yang dilindungi secara nasional maupun internasional. [303-1, 303-2]

As for the water source to meet the needs of the plant’s supporting facilities, it is groundwater from deep wells within Pupuk Kaltim. The extraction of potable groundwater from deep wells used by Pupuk Kaltim is authorized by a Groundwater Utilization Permit (SIPA) issued by the integrated investment and service agency of East Kalimantan Province based on the recommendation of the Energy and Mineral Resources Agency of East Kalimantan Province and the Environmental Agency of Bontang City. During 2023, groundwater extraction amounted to 3,446,026 m3. This groundwater is used for domestic purposes unrelated to factory production, such as central offices, factory offices, docks, hospitals, mosques, employee housing, and CSR for buffer zone residents. The distribution of groundwater is equipped with a network and pipeline system, with flow meter monitoring and the replacement of threaded faucets with on-off type faucets. [303-3]
Based on measurements with flow meters, in 2023, the total seawater taken for desalination processes was 61,078,549 m3 (2022: 62,564,591 m3), and the desalination products (thermal desalination and RO desalination) amounted to 6,267,796 m3 (2022: 6,130,029 m3) or 33.60% (2022: 33.83%).
A small portion of this amount is used as process water for the cooling water system. Pupuk Kaltim uses a once-through system, where all heat exchange water from factory equipment is discharged directly into the sea, thus the water source is not significantly affected.

[303-5]Pupuk Kaltim berupaya melakukan efisiensi air dengan melakukan penghematan air di proses produksi dan unit pendukung lainnya.
Program yang dilakukan mulai dari daur ulang limbah (reduce, reuse, recycle) dari air proses, peningkatan kehandalan proses peralatan proses, serta pemeliharaan pipa distribusi air untuk mencegah kebocoran serta didapatkan inovasi program yang menambah efisiensi air.

Program penghematan konsumsi air tersebut dilakukan dengan mengacu pada Kebijakan Direktur Utama PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur tentang efisiensi air dan penurunan beban pencemaran dari air limbah yang diimplementasikan melalui SK Direksi tentang Struktur Tata Kelola Sistem Manajemen Lingkungan, yang bertugas menyusun perangkat sistem dan penerapannya di PT Pupuk Kaltim.
Perusahaan juga melakukan efisiensi air dengan memanfaatkan hasil olahan limbah cair berkadar amoniak tinggi sebagai air umpan boiler. Limbah diolah di unit Waste Water Treatment (WWT) yang terintegrasi dengan pabrik urea.
