CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

(10)

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

A. History of Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar

Universitas Muhammadiyah (Unismuh) Makassar was founded on 19th June 1963 as a branch of the Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta. The establishment of this university is a realization of the results of the 23rd South and Southeast Sulawesi Muhammadiyah Regional Conference in the Bantaeng Regency.

The establishment was supported by Muhammadiyah Association as an organization engaged in education, teaching, and preaching amar ma’ruf nahi munkar, based on the Letter Number: E-6/098/1963 dated 22 JumadilAkhir 1394 H/12th July 1963 M. Deed of establishment by the notary R. Sinojo Wongsowidjojo based on Number: 71 dated 19th June 1963. Unismuh Makassar was declared a registered private university on 1st October 1965.

At the beginning of its establishment, this university opened two faculties: the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training (using the same curriculum as IKIP Makassar) and the Tarbiyah Faculty (using the same curriculum as IAIN Alauddin Makassar). The two existing faculties continue to be developed by opening branches in several districts/cities in South Sulawesi. Branches of the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training are in the districts of Bone, Bulukumba, Sidrap, Enrekang, and Pare-Pare. All of these branches are currently standing independently of the College of Teaching and Education (STKIP). Alhamdulillah STKIP Pare-pare has become Universitas Muhammadiyah Pare-Pare (UMPAR), STKIP Bulukumba has become Universitas Muhammadiyah Bulukumba, STKIP Sidrap and STISIP Sidraphave become UniversitasMuhammadiyahSidenrengRappang. While the Tarbiyah Faculty branches, which were opened in Jeneponto, Sinjai, Enrekang, Maros, and Pangkep Regencies have been established independently, Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar, is currently concentrating on implementing education in Makassar.

Muhammadiyah Higher Education (PTM) has a very big task and role for religion, nation, and state, both in the present and in the future. As one of the PTMs in Eastern Indonesia, it was embedded with an educational culture that was passed down as Muhammadiyah's charity work. Makassar Muhammadiyah University now has significant potential; sufficient capital, and broad access. Adequate capital is

Say, ˹O Prophet, ˺ “O my people! Persist in your ways, for I ˹too˺ will persist in mine. You will soon come to know (QS Az-Zumar: 39)

And (he said): "O my people! Persist in your ways, for I ˹too˺ will persist in mine. You will soon come to know who will be visited by a humiliating torment and is a liar! And watch! I too am watching with you" (QS Huud:

(22)

b. Work with the best results

Who has created death and life that He may test you which of you is best in deed. And He is the Almighty, the Oft-Forgiving; (QS Al-Mulk: 2) c. Work according to their expertise

Say, ˹O Prophet, ˺ “Everyone acts in their own way. But your Lord knows best whose way is rightly guided (Surah Al-Isra: 84)

d. Work in accordance with propriety and worth.

Whoever does righteous deeds - whether male or female - while he (or she) is a believer; then We will certainly give them a good life, and We will certainly grant them their rewards in proportion to the best of what they used to do. (Surah An-Nahl: 97)

So whoever does good deeds and is a believer will never be denied ˹the reward for˺ their striving, for We are recording it all (Surah Al-Anbiya':

94)

(23)

So whoever does an atom’s weight of good deeds will see it. (QS Al-Zalzalah: 7)

e. If a matter is not left to the experts, then wait for its destruction (HR.

Bukhari).

Apart from that, Islam encourages its people to:

a. Having honesty

(24)
(25)

23. among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah; of them some have fulfilled their Nahbah; and some of them are still waiting, but they have never changed in the least.

24. That Allah may reward the men of truth for their truth, and punish the hypocrites, if He wills, or accept their repentance by turning to them. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

25. And Allah drove back those who disbelieved in their rage: they gained no advantage. Allah sufficed for the believers in the fighting. And Allah is Ever All-Strong, All-Mighty.

26. And those of the People of the Scripture who backed them, Allah brought them down from their forts and cast terror into their hearts; a group you killed, and a group you made captives.

27. And He caused you to inherit their lands, and their houses, and their riches, and a land which you had not trodden. And Allah is able to do all things.

28. O Prophet! Say to your wives: "If you desire the life of this world, and its glitter, then come! I will make a provision for you and set you free in a handsome manner.''

29. "But if you desire Allah and His Messenger, and the Home of the Hereafter, then verily, Allah has prepared for the doers of good among you an enormous reward.''

30. O wives of the Prophet! Whoever of you commits an open Fahishah, the torment for her will be doubled, and that is ever easy for Allah.

31. And whosoever of you is obedient to Allah and His Messenger, and does righteous good deeds, We shall give her, her reward twice over, and We have prepared for her a noble provision.

32. O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women. If you keep you have Taqwa, then be not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease should be moved with desire, but speak in an honorable manner.

33. And stay in your houses, and do not Tabarruj yourselves like the Tabarruj of the times of ignorance, and perform the Salah, and give Zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah wishes only to remove the Ar-Rijs from you, O members of the family, and to purify you with a thorough purification.

(26)

34. And remember, that which is recited in your houses of the Ayat of Allah and Al-Hikmah. Verily, Allah is Ever Most Courteous, Well-Acquainted with all things. (Q.S. Al-Ahzaab: 23-34).

b. Collaborate and help in goodness

O believers! Do not violate Allah’s rituals ˹of pilgrimage˺, the sacred months, the sacrificial animals, the ˹offerings decorated with˺ garlands, nor those

˹pilgrims˺ on their way to the Sacred House seeking their Lord’s bounty and pleasure. When the pilgrimage has ended, you are allowed to hunt. Do not let the hatred of a people who once barred you from the Sacred Mosque provoke you to transgress. Cooperate with one another in goodness and righteousness, and do not cooperate in sin and transgression. And be mindful of Allah.

Surely Allah is severe in punishment. (QS Al-Maidah: 2)

c. Work with full responsibility because it is always supervised by Allah SWT, the Messenger, and the Community

Tell ˹them, O Prophet˺, “Do as you will. Your deeds will be observed by Allah, His Messenger, and the believers. And you will be returned to the Knower of the seen and unseen, then He will inform you of what you used to do (QS At-Taubah: 105).

d. Simple and not exaggerated

Allah said, “Then get down from Paradise! It is not for you to be arrogant here. So get out! You are truly one of the disgraced." (QS Al-A'raaf: 13)

(27)
(28)

Do not be so tight-fisted, for you will be blameworthy; nor so open-handed, for you will end up in poverty (QS Al-Israa': 29)

And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor stingy, but are in a just balance between them. (QS Al-Furqaan: 67)

As for the sky, He raised it ˹high˺, and set the balance ˹of justice˺ (QS Ar- Rahman: 7)

e. Be diligent and work hard

Once the prayer is over, disperse throughout the land and seek the bounty of Allah. And remember Allah often so you may be successful (QS Al-Jumu'ah:

10).

f. Discipline

As for those who had settled in the city and ˹embraced˺ the faith before ˹the arrival of˺ the emigrants, they love whoever immigrates to them, never having a desire in their hearts for whatever ˹of the gains˺ is given to the emigrants.

They give ˹the emigrants˺ preference over themselves even though they may

(29)

be in need. And whoever is saved from the selfishness of their own souls, it is they who are ˹truly˺ successfu (QS Al-Hashr: 7)

g. Be careful in acting and making decisions

O believers, if an evildoer brings you any news, verify ˹it˺ so you do not harm people unknowingly, becoming regretful for what you have done. (QS Al- Hujurat: 6)

h. Competing in goodness

For every nation there is a direction to which they face (in their prayers). So hasten towards all that is good. Wherever you may be, Allah will bring you together (on the Day of Resurrection). Truly, Allah is able to do all things.

(QS Al-Baqarah:148)

We have revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ this Book with the truth, as a confirmation of previous Scriptures and a supreme authority on them. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed, and do not follow their desires over the truth that has come to you. To each of you, We have ordained a code of law and a way of life. If Allah had willed, He would have made you one community, but His Will is to test you with what He has given ˹each of˺

(30)

you. So compete with one another in doing good deeds. To Allah you will all return, then He will inform you ˹of the truth˺ regarding your differences. (QS Al-Maidah: 48)

i. Honest and trustworthy

Indeed, Allah commands you to return trusts to their rightful owners; and when you judge between people, judge with fairness. What a noble commandment from Allah to you! Surely Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing (QS An-Nisa': 58)

Observe the ˹five obligatory˺ prayers—especially the middle prayer—and stand in true devotion to Allah. (QS Al-Baqarah: 238)

(8) Those who are faithfully true to their Amanat (all the duties which Allah has ordained, honesty, moral responsibility and trusts, etc.) and to their covenants; (QS Al-Mu'minun: 8)

3. Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship is something that is inside that gives encouragement and makes us always move forward, wanting to have a better future. This is the essence of entrepreneurship, which is to continuously innovate, be independent, visionary, creative, and realistic, dare to take risks, never give up, and be independent.

(31)

4. Principles

To support the organizational culture, it is framed with the following principles:
