From the Desk of the FACET Director
Well, the paint is barely dry on our walls, but we are now entrenched in our new offices. As many of you may know, FACET has re-located to another part of the University Library at IUPUI.
Our budget has rippled with the cost of some new furniture, but we will survive (after helpful additional funding from the University administration). When you are next at the Library, you should check out our new space in UL 1180. In addition, if you are from outside Indianapolis and visiting the Library, you can use the Conference Room as temporary quarters including access to the Ethernet and a phone.
We’ll even offer you a complimentary beverage.
New developments. As you may also know, I have two new roles in the University. Besides the FACET Directorship, I now work in the Office of the Executive Vice President. My role there includes academic promotion and tenure processes (for IUPUI and the regional campuses), higher education strategic planning, state policy, and coordination of special projects. Since I am involved with the Academic Leadership Council (previously called Academic Officers Council), it is an opportunity to regularly inform this group of FACET activities, projects and plans, as well as aspects of the Mack Center. Most recently I solicited their input on the next theme for the IU Leadership Institute Series. The most recent

theme on “Citizenship in the 21st Century World”
led to the latest volume, “Quick Hits for Educating Citizens”. This series, approaching its eleventh annual event, brings contemporary educational challenges into the University arena for future campus leaders.
Strategic Planning. Perhaps the most intense effort has focused on developing a revised strategic plan for FACET. This past summer, the Steering Committee convened for a retreat on the first steps in the process and updated our mission and vision. In addition, we have brought about significant changes already in the nomination system. Many of you may be experiencing the consequences of those changes this year. The changes this year reflect much of the work of Andy Gavrin and his Task Force’s efforts to re-evaluate the selection process (over the past couple of years). While finishing touches were part of our Strategic Planning process to ensure we could put it into place for this cycle, we will be watching for needed adjustments in the process for next year. The Steering Committee has also developed a broader organizational structure for FACET involving faculty committees of FACET members where we can more effectively focus on developing new or revised activities compatible with our mission, as well as improving the connections between us and the Mack Center. The Steering Committee and FACET staff continues to work on the Strategic Plan so it will be brought to our membership for the spring Retreat.
As we ponder the evolution of FACET from its founding in 1989, we should realize that the organization continues to evolve in ways unimagined (maybe) by its charter members.
Many believe, as do I, that faculty teaching and learning roles have become so much more complex in recent years. In response, FACET needs to identify a revised vision of its own role in the University. We should ask, “How can we aggressively address the issues most important, not only to the membership, but to the University as a whole?” With that charge in hand, we need to develop new initiatives and revise continuing activities that address advancing faculty success that benefit our students and the University. So, will we be able to do all of this in time for our 20th anniversary?

PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH NEWS
The Board of Trustees appointed a faculty advisory panel to work with the search committee. The panel was chosen to ensure a broad cross-section of representation from the various campuses. We are pleased that among these faculty are two FACET members, Kathy E.
Johnson (FACET 2002) (IUPUI) and Susan Hendricks (FACET 2005) (IUK).
FACET et alii Update
There have been a few changes in the FACET Office since our last newsletter. As most of you already know, David Malik has become the new Director of FACET. He took over the reins on July 1, 2006. Also, the Administrative Assistant, Ali Morris-Fitzgerald, gave birth to a bouncing baby boy, Austin, on August 3, 2006 and Kimberly Lane, FACET Manager, is now Kimberly Olivares and had her first baby Monday, January 15th, Maya Adelina.
The other big news is the change of location of the FACET office. The offices were located in the Office for Professional Development, UL 1140, on the IUPUI campus. With our change in director- ship, came a change in location. We have now moved down the hall to UL 1180. Our new space is significantly bigger and allows for us to have
our own set of offices, along with a FACET Conference room. The conference table can accommodate up to 6 people, and we are more than happy to share with FACET members. If you would like to schedule to use this conference room, please contact Kimberly or Ali.
We love to have visitors, so if you are on campus and would like to check out our new space please drop by. Generic signage is posted in the Library while we await formal signage.

CAMPUS UPDATES
IU Southeast Update
On August 23rd, we held the annual “FACET Day” which is a professional development opportunity and part of the activities associated with “welcome back week”. The presentation was on brain compatible teaching and was attended by approximately 40 faculty members.
On October 27th we conducted an “advanced peer review training” facilitated by Robin Morgan (FACET 1993). This was a follow-up to previous seminars on conducting peer reviews and attended by 12 faculty member, all of whom are members of FACET.
A number of our members have conducted peer reviews on campus which are coordinated by our Institute for Learning and Teaching Excellence.
Sadly, we lost a wonderful and extremely well respected FACET colleague, Lillian Yeager (FACET 1990), Dean of the Division of Nursing.
She will be fondly remembered by faculty and students for her many contributions to excellence in teaching.
IUPUI Update
The Biomedical Engineering Technology-BS degree proposal has been approved by the Indiana Higher Education Commission at its May 12, 2006 meeting at Vincennes University.
Special thanks go to the Director of the Program, Barbara Christe (FACET 2005), Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology faculty and staff, as

Due to short notice, the only location that we could secure for the weekend before the big race was University Place Hotel and Conference Center located in Indianapolis on the IUPUI campus. With the venue chosen being more of a conference setting than a retreat setting, we decided to change the flow of our retreat somewhat this year. The retreat will start on Friday night a little later than normal with an opening plenary around 3 PM and the retreat will end Saturday early evening after a closing plenary. Please watch for updates on our website as the date approaches. For more information on University Place, please check out the link below.

Four Winds Resort and Marina Bloomington, IN
July 13-15, 2007
The tenth annual Future Faculty Teaching Fellows (FFTF) Summer Institute cosponsored by FACET and RUGS (Research and the University Graduate School) will be held July 13- 15, 2007 at Four Winds Resort and Marina in Bloomington, Indiana. The institute gives graduate students, interested in teaching and research careers, who are nearing the end of their doctoral work, the opportunity to spend a semester or two as a half time faculty fellow at one of the eight IU campuses. The experience that the future faculty will gain should be similar to what they will endure when they enter into an academic position after completing their doctoral program. The goals of the institute include (1) increased familiarity with students on the IU campuses; (2) increased knowledge of faculty realities on the IU campuses; (3) increased repertoire of course design and strategies; and, (4) increased self-assessment and reflection on teaching.

Greetings from the
Mack Center for Inquiry on Teaching and
Learning!
Mack Fellows have been hard at work this year.
We began the year by welcoming new fellows, Dr. Sabrina Williamson and Dr. Valerie Chang.
Together they are assessing the use of case- based learning in teaching social work practice skills to both undergraduate and graduate students.
The Journal of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (JoSoTL) has posted two new issues, with the able help of Donald Coffin, Eugenia Fernandez, Joan Lafuze, David Malik, Julie Saam, Ellen Sigler, and many reviewers. See http://www.iupui.edu/~josotl/ to read our issues.
We also completed our work on the Brief Student Goal Orientation Intervention to Improve Science Course Success project, funded by an Intercampus Research Fund grant.
Bernice Pescosolido, Mark Hoyert, David Malik, and Carol Hostetter were involved. The intervention, designed to improve student success through changing students’ learning motivation, was tested on two campuses and in two different science classes. Results indicated that improvement was made in student retention. We used the data to apply for a National Science Foundation grant.
Mack Fellows also have made many presentations this semester. Two of note were for the Bloomington SoTL program and the International Society of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning conference. Bernice Pescosolido, David Malik, David Pace and Carol Hostetter presented Quick Hits for SOTL: A Brief Orientation to Actual Issues in the Process of Scholarly Inquiry.
We are also consultants for the institutional team for Indiana University Bloomington’s Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Leadership Program. The
team will support the university’s development of a collaborative SoTL community.
We are currently reviewing proposals for our next cohort of Mack Fellows, and looking forward to new projects in the spring. Please let us know if you have ideas for faculty development in SoTL or collaborative research projects. Indiana University has many opportunities to offer the teacher / scholar.

The Mack Award will be awarded annually to an individual who has an extensive career of demonstrated excellence and distinguished service to teaching consistent with the goals and ideals of the Faculty Colloquium for Excellence in Teaching (FACET).
P.A. Mack, former IU Trustee and lifelong advocate for teaching excellence, was given the first award at the annual FACET retreat in May 1999.
DEFINITION OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO TEACHING
For the purposes of this award, “distinguished service to teaching” is broadly defined as service in the form of leadership or creative participation that significantly and demonstrably advances and/or extends the goals and ideals of FACET as spelled out in the FACET mission statement.
To qualify, service must extend beyond an individual’s own disciplinary unit and/or campus.
Service activities need not be limited to the Indiana University system; however, the contributions cited in the nomination letter must include service to Indiana University.
ELIGIBILITY
Nominees may include but are not limited to FACET members. Non-FACET faculty, administrators, professional staff, alumni, associate instructors, adjunct faculty, and others who have contributed distinguished service to teaching also are eligible for this award.
REWARDS AND EXPECTATIONS
The winner will be recognized at the next annual FACET retreat (May 18-19, 2007), and will be invited to organize and lead the “Annual P.A.
Mack Distinguished Service to Teaching Forum”
at the retreat the following year (May 2008).
The Forum will be planned in collaboration with the annual FACET retreat planning committee and can take the form of a presentation, interactive discussion, workshop, or other form of creative or scholarly activity related to teaching. The specific nature of both the retreat Forum and the outreach effort will be left to the discretion of the winner, but will be planned and implemented in collaboration with FACET staff.
The winner will also receive a monetary award of $2,500 provided by the Mack Endowment and the Indiana University Foundation.
NOMINATION PROCESS
Those nominating an individual for the award must be members of FACET. A nominator should write a 3-4 page letter documenting the nominee’s distinguished service and how it demonstrably advances the goals and ideals of FACET and also certifying that the individual meets the other eligibility requirements for the award. Self-nominations will not be accepted.

Tanice’s research focuses on the social phenomenon of drumming and its relation to community, respect for diversity, and awareness. She is interested in how sound and movement are related to motivation, learning, healing and spirituality.
