The Sarcophaga type
ismost nearly
relatedon the one hand with the Muscidae (Calliphoridae) and on the other hand with the Miltogramma and Metopia
types.Through the Muscidae
itis
next
relatedwith the Stomoxydidae (Muscinae
auct.)and through
theMiltogramma type with the Calirrhoidae (Dexiinae
auct.)and the Dexiidae (Pseudodexiidae BB). Brachicoma, Amobia and Tephromyia
aretypes
of tribeswhich belong
inthe family with Sarcophaga, and
it isprobably taxonomically expe-
dient toinclude the Miltogramma and Metopia
types in thesame
family.
Sarcophaga has long functioned
asa
catch-all genericname.
As
such, itmeans
little.A genus can not be conceded by
elimination,but must be recognized by
definition.Sarcophaga has thus grown
tobe a taxonomic complex which demands un-
tangling.The
genitalicmethod
of distinguishingthe
specieshas worked
well inEurope, where the forms have been under observation long enough
to linkboth
sexes inmost
cases.In attacking
themass
ofcomparatively unknown
species inAmer-
ica,
however,
the taskofseparating them
is betterbegun
atthe female end. Gravid
females,captured
inthe open,
will furnish larvaeforthe study
ofthe
three stagesand
rearingtothe adults ofboth
sexes.At one
stroke thisplan
yields characters of all stagesand both
sexes.Study
of the total characters forthe
speciesshows natural groups
of species in thistangled mass
ofunlike forms.
The
realproblem which confronts us
in theSarcophaga com- plex
isthe elucidation of speciesgroups

all-important
toknow what
speciesbelong
together.When
these
groups
areproperly
segregated, the speciescan be
studied toadvantage. The
elucidation ofthe genera
carrieswith
ita knowledge
ofboth
sexes ofthecomponent
species,which
isthe necessaryantecedent
to themale
genitalic separation ofthe forms. In
the light ofsuch study
it isfound
that thecomplex has lodged many forms which can not be admitted
tothe
tribeSarcophagini.
