Dementia is not a single disease, but a combination of symptoms. His symptoms not only cause memory loss, but also affect language ability, spatial sense, attention and other functions. There may also be personality changes, delusions or hallucinations and other symptoms.
Dementia is not a disease exclusively for the elderly. The so-called juvenile amnesia refers to those diagnosed with dementia under the age of 65.
Dementia, like some chronic diseases, cannot be cured, but it can be controlled by drugs to delay the deterioration. Dementia is divided into the following three types, there are degenerative dementia, vascular dementia, and othe factors contributing to dementia.
In Taiwan there is a non-profit organization called Taiwan Alzheimher’s Disease Association (TADA). TADA was established on September 15, 2002.
It has represented Taiwan as an official member of ADI since 2005. We can see that the two people in the logo are the demented and caregivers who support each other. TADA has only one head office in Taipei and no chapters.
TADA offers many services, of which I have chosen four to introduce.
As mentioned earlier, dementia is not an exclusive disease of the elderly, so TADA has Young Memory Club, which provides services for young people with dementia. The content of the service will be customized according to the situation of dementia. Course content includes: physical fitness, dance, handicraft, hand-made cooking, Young coffee shop.
This is the first community-based health promotion service designed for mild dementia patients and their families in Taiwan. The purpose is to help dementia patients slow down the rate of degeneration, so that they can enjoy a life full of sunshine and laughter. The course content includes art, music, cognitive training.
TADA provides three accessories, including bracelets, cloth labels and emergency contact cards, on which you can write your family's contact number and address.
In Indonesia there is a non-profit organization called Alzheimer’s Indonesia (ALZI). Alzheimer Indonesia is a non-profit organization that aims to improve the quality of life of people with dementia and Alzheimer's, their families, and caregivers in Indonesia. Alzheimer Indonesia started as the Indonesian
Alzheimer Association, which was established on July 22, 2000. Since 2009, Alzheimer Indonesia has officially become a member of Alzheimer Disease International (ADI), based in London, UK, and in collaboration with the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Currently, Alzheimer Indonesia has representatives in 18 major cities in Indonesia and 6 cities abroad.
Alzheimer Indonesia has many activities, including caregiver meetings, training and education, seminars on dementia and Alzheimer's, and a commemoration of World Alzheimer's Month, which includes campaigns and donation.
We also comparing the TADA and ALZI.
TADA has five consultation methods, including telephone, online help, web page filling form, email and Facebook private message. And ALZI has a NARAZI Program, it is a online consultation from Zoom Meeting.
TADA has a Young memory club, and ALZI has a similar program but the service included on education and volunteer activities.
TADA can help create personal accessories to prevent wandering, and ALZI only sell a merchandise like book, tote bag, tumblr and many more to campaign awareness about dementia/alzheimer’s.
ALZI is currently part of the Strengthening Responses to Dementia in Developing Countries (STRiDE) multinational research initiative. TADA is not one of the investigators of the STRiDE project, but TADA joined in other research.
