CHAPTER 3
Transition of the Cultural Landscape of Guwahati
Landscapes
Historic structures are transformed into landmarks, and these are an important part of the city's cultural landscape. It was then that the British began to add to the cultural landscape of the state of Assam and to the city of Guwahati in particular. The cultural landscape and the archaeological sites are properties in the prime area of the city of Guwahati.
The cultural landscape of Guwahati represents the artistic and religious development of the colonial period from the end of the 19th century to the second half of the 1954.
Urbanity/ Urbanisation: -
Instead, the city's historic centers have become dangerous to modern life and have had to be completely removed or reduced to museum pieces. It turns out that since architects and planners had failed to understand the morphology of urban form, they started building arbitrarily within the urban fabric. Guwahati is one of the 63 cities of India under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
JNNURM aims to fulfill Guwahati's aspirations to play its role as the Gateway to the Northeast and possibly Southeast Asia under the Look East Policy (now Act East Policy) of the Government of India.
A Brief Outline of the city of Guwahati: -
By 1835, a school (the Gauhati School which later became known as the Collegiate School in 1865 and in the early 20th century, the institution was renamed the Cotton Collegiate School) was established in Guwahati under the patronage of the General Committee of Public Education. The Saraighat Bridge over the Brahmaputra River was the next development that changed the scenario of the city. In 1972 after the reorganization of Assam state, the capital was shifted from Shillong to Dispur (Guwahati) where the city gained considerable political importance.

In 2005, the GMDA CEO was of the opinion that they would place before the Government of Assam the issue regarding the construction of a car park taking over both the MMCH campus and the Mission Complex for the purpose. And it was only on February 15, 2007 that the CBCNEI received the disputed letter from the Secretary of the Department, Government of Assam. Members of Parliament from Assam raised the issue in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament, and held discussions with the Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh.
CBCNEI has major activities catering to the needs of the people of North East India viz.

Guwahati being strategically located near the Brahmaputra River, it became the natural choice of the American Baptists also to settle permanently in the Kamarpatty area. Thus a mission center was established in Guwahati and this mission is the precursor to the establishment of the first Baptist Church in the North Eastern region. In 1845, representatives of Christians in Nowgow, Sibsagar and Guwahati established a church in Guwahati, which was the first Baptist church of Assam and the North East.
Guwahati Baptist Church, which is located in the Mission Compound at Kamarpatty in the Fancy Bazar area of Guwahati, is under the administrative care of the Council of Baptist Churches North East India (CBCNEI).

Even today, the Christ Church exists vulnerable under the pressure of development in the heart of Panbazar within the city of Guwahati. The roof of the church is divided into two main sections which are visible from the front, while an extension to the north over the vestry is also well pronounced. The two panes of glass with biblical symbols attached to both sides of the wall behind the Altar Table in the center area define holiness.
The wooden railing placed at the entrance to the Altar Platform is a kind of barrier, signifying purity by separating the saint from the outside.

Regina Kuehn in her book ―Baptism Place‖ mentions the shapes of baptismal stones that reveal baptismal truths. Different types of baptistery shapes are womb, cross, tomb, stepped, octagonal, hexagonal and tub. The octagonal baptismal font is inside the Christ Church which was established in 1844 in Guwahati.
The tub-shaped font is seen in the Guwahati Baptist Church established in the year 1845; while the current building was built in 1914.

Church of Christ users ie. The Anglican Church community of Guwahati and the Church owners reflect the local situation. In this regard, members of the Church of Christ are sensitive to the idea of inheritance. At the same time they are enthusiastic about extending the life of the Church building.
Do you believe that laws can help to protect the life of the old building of the church?.
