Perceived Social Support and Qualtty of Life of Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis

Myrene S. Esteban

Around the world, the prevalence of chronic

disease

is signific"rtly

increasing.

Condition such as kidney failure, accounts as one of the top

l0leading

causes of deatbs

in

the Philippines (Sun Star, Davao, 2010). Perceived social and

family

support has been consistently associated

to better

prognosis

of various long-term

illnesses,

while

an increased risk of

mortality

is

linked

to lower levels of social support (Thong et al., 2007);

(Leifheit et a1., 2010); (Untas et al., 2010). The purpose of

this

study is

to

determine the relationship

of perceived social suppoft and quality of life of patients

undergoing hemodialysis.

A

cross-sectional,

correlational doigt

was used. Data

were

collected

in

hemodialysis

unit in a university hospital in

Angeles

Crry in

2013. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to examine the data. Frequency and percentage were used to determine

the

characteristics

of the

hemodialysis patients. Data were analyzed using

SPSS version 16. For test

of

relationship between perceived social support and quality

of

life (satisfaction and importance), Vassar Stats was used. Relationships between variables

were determined using the criterion p < 0.05 level. Findings:

Hypertension Nephrosclerosis ranks as number one among

the

leading causes

of

chronic renal failure which consisted

of fifty

percent (50.0olo)

or

53

out of the

106 participants. There were a

statistically significant relationship between perceived social support and

health-

functioning 10.42 (sig. p <

0.001), socioeconomic -r=0.32 (sig.

p

< 0.001), and

family domain rA.29,

(sig.

p <

0.006), subscales

of quality of life.

Conclusions: Designing prevention and

control

programs to create social awareness can assist

in

the pevention

of

hypertension

that

can lead

to

CRF. Perceived social suppoft is associated

with

quality

of

life among patients on hemodialysis.

Keywords: Perceived social supporr, qualiry of

life,

and hemodialysis patients
