Around the world, the prevalence of chronic
diseaseis signific"rtly
increasing.Condition such as kidney failure, accounts as one of the top
l0leading
causes of deatbsin
the Philippines (Sun Star, Davao, 2010). Perceived social and
family
support has been consistently associatedto better
prognosisof various long-term
illnesses,while
an increased risk ofmortality
islinked
to lower levels of social support (Thong et al., 2007);(Leifheit et a1., 2010); (Untas et al., 2010). The purpose of
this
study isto
determine the relationshipof perceived social suppoft and quality of life of patients
undergoing hemodialysis.A
cross-sectional,correlational doigt
was used. Datawere
collectedin
hemodialysis
unit in a university hospital in
AngelesCrry in
2013. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to examine the data. Frequency and percentage were used to determinethe
characteristicsof the
hemodialysis patients. Data were analyzed usingSPSS version 16. For test
of
relationship between perceived social support and qualityof
life (satisfaction and importance), Vassar Stats was used. Relationships between variableswere determined using the criterion p < 0.05 level. Findings:
Hypertension Nephrosclerosis ranks as number one amongthe
leading causesof
chronic renal failure which consistedof fifty
percent (50.0olo)or
53out of the
106 participants. There were astatistically significant relationship between perceived social support and
health-functioning 10.42 (sig. p <
0.001), socioeconomic -r=0.32 (sig.p
< 0.001), andfamily domain rA.29,
(sig.p <
0.006), subscalesof quality of life.
Conclusions: Designing prevention andcontrol
programs to create social awareness can assistin
the peventionof
hypertensionthat
can leadto
CRF. Perceived social suppoft is associatedwith
qualityof
