Virtual Community and Local Civil Society Empowerment

Virtual Community and Local Civil Society Empowerment

The development of communication technology has also influenced the shape of the mass media which is showed by the emergence of online news portals that have several advantages compared to conventional print media. Among them, first, the news published in online news are more comprehensive. Digital media is able to report events comprehensively to the reader / audience. A news in the digital age not only consist of text and images, but also links to all the earlier events that started the moment of the latest relevant news. By one click, the reader can be brought to a treasure trove of digital information that can explain the history, chronology and context of the event being reported. This role is certainly not shared by the print media. Besides the digital news portal also potentially more authentic because it may include other data such as text data and photos that can add the credibility and accuracy of informationsi loaded. For example, when a legislator accused of corruption, digital media can display video or audio when the politicians were in action. The politicians can not be argued that it misinterpreted what he said, or journalists slander him, if the audio or video recording when he berate his political opponents can be displayed along with the news. Another example can be seen in case of “ papa minta saham ”. The event will be much less explosive power, if there are no audio recordings that circulated widely on social media.

Penguatan Civil society Di Indonesia

Penguatan Civil society Di Indonesia

The strengthening of civil society was warmly discussed in Indonesia in the 1990s with various actions in response to the New Order. In the discourse and history of the civil society movement, the role of religion is quite strategic. This article explores the development of the Basic Ecclesial Community as a form of civil societies that can contribute to the creation of new habits in the society. The Basic Ecclesial Community can fortify its members from economic structures that do not take sides to the equality of human dignity and justice. One way that can be taken by the Basic Ecclesial Community is the strengthening of people’s economy through credit union in the middle of economic globalization with the terms of market hegemony.

Religious Responses to Globalisation | Kadir | Al-Jami'ah: Journal of Islamic Studies

Religious Responses to Globalisation | Kadir | Al-Jami'ah: Journal of Islamic Studies

How the participants understand religions can be best categorised in two different but overlapping approaches. The first views globalisation as a process of integration and interaction in which globalisation means integration of time and space which results in the increasingly reduced importance of the ‘imaginary boundaries’ of state territories, leading to the so-called ‘global village.’ Economic, socio-politic and cultural processes are among the main factors underlying this process of time and space integration. As time and space are reduced and integrated, national, religious and cultural exchange among people are intensified and accelerated as well, making them interdependent to each other. The second approach regards globalisation with emphasis on certain ideologies like capitalism (“McDonaldization” or “Americanisation”). The group who hold this approach argued that globalisation is not, and it is not all about, a mere process of turning the world into a global village through technological discoveries. Rather, it is imperialism of “Capitalism of the West” with its all faces such as colonialisation in the 19 th and 20 nd

PERAN POLITIK CIVIL SOCIETY DALAM MEWUJU

Begitu kuatnya penetrasi kekuasaan terhadap lembaga-lembaga masyarakat sipil sehingga Pierre James (dalam Budiman1996:61) mengatakan bahwa,………the single most important actor in the economic, society and polity………

The World Bank WARFP Task Team Leader Dr. Nyaneba Nkrumah summarized the story of the fishery today noting that Ghana’s main protein comes from fish and fisher folk families rely on fish to meet their incomes and subsistence. Fish has brought real wealth to many but currently there is enormous demand for fish and yet there is limited amount of fish in the ocean. The Ghanaian fishing fleet was getting more sophisticated while the use of illegal equipment is on the rise while the stocks were dwindling and fish are caught before they can reproduce.

CIVIL SOCIETY AND DEMOCRACY IN POST- SOEHARTO INDONESIA

CIVIL SOCIETY AND DEMOCRACY IN POST- SOEHARTO INDONESIA

To define civil society in opposition to the state fits two trends. First, in post-authoritarian states, like the post-communist states in Eastern Europe, there is a widespread distrust of the state, its institutions and its representatives. And this fits a second, global trend: general confidence in governments seems to be declining. Citizens tend to become politically cynical when they believe that politicians promise more than they can deliver, that politicians are in politics to serve their own interests, and that politicians can only get involved in politics if they are part of an old-boys network and not because they possess the required talents to serve the public. Where the state and its government are widely considered as illegitimate it is unlikely that democracy will grow strong roots in society of a post-authoritarian state. When public means are often used for private in 25 stead of common ends, for personal gain in stead of, by example, relieving poverty, politicians will be seen as a self-serving and unresponsive class in stead of representing the citizenry. The illegitimacy that comes with corruption, collusion, and nepotism (in Indonesia known under the acronym KKN) can be overcome in a long established democracy with a strong and independent judiciary (France is an example), but that could be entirely different in a young democracy.

Lessons from the IPCC SREX Report and Disasters in the Agriculture Sector: Managing Climate Extremes

Lessons from the IPCC SREX Report and Disasters in the Agriculture Sector: Managing Climate Extremes

Extreme climate and weather events are predicted to increase significantly in coming decades. CCA and DRM are therefore likely to require not only incremental (small, within existing technology and governance systems) changes, but also transformational (large, new system) changes. This will involve moving away from a focus on issues and events towards a change in culture and overall approach. In Bangladesh, for example, a new Storm Warning Centre and associated coastal volunteer network was established as part of the country’s early warning system. For agriculture, transformational approaches include new climate-smart agriculture policies, practices and tools, better use of climate science information in assessing risks and vulnerability, and increased financing for food security. Planners and policy-makers must work together to create a conducive policy environment, and to secure financing for such transformation. Knowledge generation and testing of new approaches to support such transformations will also be critical.
