IMPROVING THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS’ CONDITIONAL SENTENCE MASTERY THROUGH JIGSAW AT SMA NEGERI 2 BONDOWOSO IN THE 2011/2012 ACADEMIC YEAR

This Classroom Action Research was intended to improve the eleventh grade students conditional sentence mastery through jigsaw at SMA Negeri 2 Bondowoso in the 2011/2012 academic year. The research subjects were the students of class XI IPA 1 that were determined purposively by consulting to the eleventh grade English teacher. Based on the information from the teacher, this class had the lowest mean score of the English lesson among the other existing classes. However, the structure diagnostic test was given to the research subjects to know their ability of structure, especially conditional sentence type 2 and type 3. The result showed that the mean score of the students diagnostic test was only 69.2 (fair category).

The sentence is a combination of two or more words that produce a final understanding and intonation patterns. Each sentence has a constituent element of the sentence. A combination of elements will form a sentence that implies. So the sentence is a unit of language that contains a "mind" or "mandate" complete. Fries (1952:9) says that “a sentence is a group of words expressing a complete thougt” Furthermore he said that “a sentence is a word or group of words standing between an initial capital letter and a mark of end punctuation or between two marks of end punctuation.

IMPROVING STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY THROUGH AUDIO VISUALIZED NARRATIVE TEXT

This classroom action research was conducted in two cycles. The first cycle consisted of three meetings and in the second cycle there were two meetings. Every cycle consisted of five steps: 1) identifying problems and planning the action, 2) implementing the action, 3) observing the action, and 4) reflecting the result of the action. The researcher collected the data by using observation, interview, document analysis, and photographs. To analyze the qualitative data, the researcher used Burns theory. It follows the steps of assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretations and reporting the outcomes. To find out the improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery the researcher conducted some tests. The tests were conducted before the action (pre-test) and after the action (post-test). The mean score of each test was quantitatively analyzed to find out the improvement of students’ vocabulary mastery after the research action. The results of observation, interview, document analysis, and photographs were analyzed as qualitative data to find out what happen when audio-visualized narrative text is implemented in the classroom and discribing the steps in using audio-visualized narrative text to improve students vocabulary.

There are some researches by using Common Mistake Game. One of the researches is done byRani Aprilianti, entitled The Influence of Using Common Mistake Game towa rds Students‟ Simple Past Tense Mastery at the Eighth Grade of The Second Semester of SMPN 30 Bandar Lampung in the Academic Year of 2011/2012. The researcher used quantitative research. The population of the research was the eighth grade of students SMP N 30 Bandar Lampung in 2011/2012. The total numbers of the student were 160 students that consisted of 5 classes. The sample of research 64 students. 11 The result of the research showed that, this game is one of a good technique in teaching English grammar especially in Simple Present tense. So there was significant influence of using Common Mistake Game towards students‟ Simple

In accordance to Fromkin, et al. (2000) which state that sentence is included into a part of language. Hence, when students want to master a language, it is important for them to master about the sentence and its elements that can construct a sentence. Quirk, Greenbaum, Leech, and Svartvik (1985) impart that sentence is divided into three types. They are simple sentence, compound sentence, and complex sentence. Simple sentence consists of single independent clause, compound sentence consists of two independent clauses and they are connected by coordinating conjunction while complex sentence consists of dependent and independent clauses. Syntactically, sentence is constructed by any words, any phrases, and could be any clauses which are adjoined into one string. From this statement, the writer comes to this idea that it is very important for students to master the elements which are used to construct a sentence because when they want to master a sentence, they have to master the elements of the sentence firstly.
