The Interest Of English Students Of Faculty Of Letters, In The University Of Sumatera Utara In Reading Literary Works

The term of literature and sociology are two fields of knowledge that cannot be separated from each other. Literature and Sociology are two studies that are different from each other but they have close relation. Sociology derives from the Greek ‘ Socius’ (society) and ‘logos’ (science) which means the study of all the aspects of human and their relation in community (Ratha, 2003:1). Literature derives from Latin ‘littera’ which primarily refers to the written or printed words (Kasim, 2005:1). The relationship between literature and society is usually discussed by starting with the phrase, derived from De Bonald, that ‘literature is an expression of society’ (Wellek, 1963:95). Some relations between Literature and Society are: literary works absolutely is the part of society and it uses language which is the part of social institution, literary works is for the readers who are the members of society, and literary works is a picture of society.

There is another Freud’s theory that contributes to modern psychology. It emphasizes on the unconscious aspects of the human psycho. According to Freud, the child reaches the stage of genital primacy around age five, at which time the Oedipus Complex manifests itself. In simple terms, the Oedipus Complex derives from the Boy’s unconscious rivalry with his father for the love of his mother. Because of strict authority in all forms from his father may originate fearness on a child. As a result his relation to his father is ambivalent and he becomes closer to his mother. Such condition can emerge the Oedipus Complex on him (Guerin, 1999: 127-134).

The Analysis of Grammatical Errors of First Year Students’ Essays

The Analysis of Grammatical Errors of First Year Students’ Essays

Abstract: A language learner often faces many linguistic differences, especially if the native language and the target language are from different language families. The current study investigates the grammatical errors made by the first year students of the English Department, Faculty of Letters, Jember University, Indonesia. The data were collected from 30 participants’ essays of Writing 01 class (documentary data) conducted from August to December 2014. Having been identified, the errors were classified into various categorizations, and analyzed based on descriptive-interpretative method to find the possible sources of the errors. The research revealed that the learners committed ten types of grammatical errors, and the six mostly prominent errors were plural form, subject-verb agreement, verb tense, word form, subject/verb omission, and passive voice respectively. This research also showed that the errors mostly resulted from the different linguistic principles of Indonesian and English (interlingual transfer), and partly from the faulty of overgeneralization of English rules (intralingual transfer). The overt influences of Indonesian to English as well as the overgeneralization of English rules can provide the writing teachers and course designers with insightful guidelines for better understanding of the sources of errors, which in turn, can help them to apply the more appropriate approaches to manage the foreign language learners’ errors of the students.
