Computer-Assisted reading material to enhance reading skills.

Students might have their expectation of what will their reading class with the assistance of computer look like. Most come with their excitement since they hope for having non boredom class as what had been stated by Hurlock (1980) that the students need fun learning environment that could drive them away from boredom. The next question asked about what kind of reading activity they want to have in their reading class assisted with computer. Eleven students would love to have comics completed with reading comprehension, nine students would like to have text with illustration while the rest six students would love to have interactive text and group discussion. For this question, the mean was 2.12. They were also asked about their opinion if they have a reading class assisted with computer. Sixteen students thought it would be totally fun, eight students thought that it would be interesting, while the rest one student thought it will be just the same and nothing special. The mean for this question was 2.31. The complete description of the preliminary questionnaire results for the fourth part is presented in Table 4.4. Moreover, the descriptive statistics of the needs analysis questionnaire results were presented in Appendix 20.

The researcher collects the data from the book of 2013 curriculum for the first grade of senior high school in the first semester as the primary data source. Kothari (2004:95) states “The primary data are those which are collected afresh and for the first time, and thus happen to be original in character". The data of the research was taken from Bahasa Inggris by Utami Widiati, Zulianti Rohmah and Furaidah textbook for the first grade of senior high school in the first semester. The publisher of this book is Indonesia Education and culture Ministry in 2014. Actually, there are nine units that were found in the book, but in this study the researcher will take seven units to analyze, it is involves unit1, unit 4, unit 5, unit 6, unit 7, unit 8, and unit 9. Because, in this study the researcher focus on the reading material, both of the unit was found reading material inside. Therefore, unit 2 and unit 3 did not found the reading material inside. So, the researcher did not use both of unit to analyze.

DESIGNING ENCYBORIMAL AS A TEACHING MATERIAL FOR TEACHING READING ON REPORT TEXT

The researcher used development research method to design the encyborimal. Tools of collecting data includes interview sheet, observation sheet, field notes, and assessment rubric. Direct communication technique was applied with interview to the participants consist the eleventh grade students and an English teacher of SMAN 8 Pontianak. The observation was conducted at the library to analyse the documents of resources for English teaching provided at the school. The data of observation is used as the comparison of the textbooks and encyclopedia in the school’s library with Encyborimal. In order to design the product, the documentation was done to obtain the data of local animals in West Kalimantan which conducted in Badan Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam. To validate Encyborimal and to know whether the product is suitable to be used as a teaching material for teaching reading on report text based on local content or not, the research asked an expert who is specialized in local content material, reading material, and material design to evaluate the product. The techniques of data analysis that were used are the data of need analysis and expert validation.
