Genetic Diversity and Wheat Improvement for Sustainable Agriculture. (C08-mujeeb-kazi231799-oral)

Abstract:

Genetic diversity is a crucial component of durability to stress resistance/tolerance for both

dynamic/static crop production systems, and is a major contributor to agricultural sustainability. The projected grain production increase of about 2.7 percent each year over the next two decades to meet the needs of approximately 8.4 billion people necessitates utilizing novel systems of crop production for which one of our strategies revolves around exploiting various species from the gene pools of the wheat family; Triticeae. As a consequence we have produced numerous genetic stocks from the

primary/secondary/tertiary pools that assist wheat improvement, coupled with durable and sustainable outputs through the utilization of intergeneric plus interspecific protocols. Foremost in our strategies has been the usage of D genome synthetic hexaploids which provide extensive promise for agriculture through the use of novel genes for numerous biotic/abiotic stresses. It is also a unique germplasm base suitable for molecular diagnostics. Additional sources are further exemplified as they impinge upon enhancing the genetic resource available for wheat improvement.
