Abstract:
An increasing percentage of citizens are moving from the urban and intercity areas to the suburban and rural areas of Missouri. Without the urban infrastrcuture and muncipal management entities this "new rural generation" is usually the owner and operator of their own onsite wastewater system and manager of their stormwater runoff system. This change in demographics has provided a wide array of
opportunities for pedologists to provide onsite soils information and associated educational materials for many of these specific land uses. Most importantly, it has provided the pedologist the opportunity to write the appropriate soil and site
assessment protocol and minimum construction standards with the specific land use code. Additionally, the increased role of pedologists in large, broad soil site
assessments and planning of wastewater and stormwater management schemes for subdividsions before site-specific assessment of each individual building unit has been realized. We will discuss: the importance of pedologists in crafting the code or statute both at the local and state levels; specifically defining the roles and
qualifications of a soil scientist (pedologist) in the code; the inputs pedologists have provided in the education of the "new rural generation"; and opportunities with our associated professionals in these land use decisons.
