(a) For persons who have not previously matriculated, applica- tion to sign the matriculation roll. The Faculty Handbooks contain full details concerning the matriculation qualification, including a statement of the special provisions applicable to ex-service candidates, candidates whose qualifications _ were gained elsewhere than in Victoria, and other special cate- gories of students. Attention is also drawn to the mainten- ante of a photographic record of matriculants, of which particulars are issued with the application to sign the matricu- lation roll.

(b) Application for approval of course (for students taking other i

than the normal year's work). This is to be lodged, after interview with the Sиb--Deаn of the appropriate Faculty, at the commencement of a course only, unless changes are made subsequently.

(c) Bank slip for the correct fees. Students taking courses at Mildura should pay their first term's fees, and their Sports and Union Fees, into the University's account at a branch of the National Bank of Australasia Ltd., before they go into residence. Practical Classes

Details of these will be posted soon after the arrival of students at the Branch.

Apparatus for Practical Chemistry

During the war years when it became impossible for students to buy their own apparatus, the Chemistry Department of the Uni- versity of Melbourne instituted a scheme whereby students hire their sets for the year from the Department. This scheme is in operation now at the Mildura Branch.

Before their first day of Practical Chemistry students should call at the Chemistry Department and obtain a special bank pay-in form, and using this they should then pay 4 to the National Bank. The stamped receipt slip from the pay-in form is then presented to the Chemistry Department Storeman when the students attend for their

The boot repairer is an employee of the University and issues to students accounts which should be paid at the Sub-Registrar's office. Dentist's accounts, which are issued in a similar manner, should also be paid at the Sub-Registrar's office. All accounts must be paid promptly.

Motor Vehicles

As garage space is limited the Branch cannot guarantee to furnish garages for all motor vehicles brought to the Branch. If motar cars or motor-cycles are brought they must be garaged or parked in locations designated by the Warden. Owners of motor vehicles must notify the Dean of Men in writing of the make, model and registration number of each vehicle in the first week after arrival at the Branch. Particulars of vehicles acquired during the . year must be similarly notified. The Warden would prefer that no motor vehicles and especially no motor-cycles were brought in. In 1941 there were more than ten accidents with motor-cycles, several of which necessitated hospital treatment and consequent interference with study.

Alcohol

Under no circumstances may students bring alcoholic liquor into the Branch or have it in their possession there.

The following are some of the

acúities which the Union provides :

The Browsing Library. This is non-technical in character, com- 'ising fiction, drama, travel, biography, etc., as well as a range of

Notes on Clubs and Societies

Australian Student Christian Мovemeni (S. C .Ate.) The Student Christian Movement includes members of all churches and those Who have yet no church connections who are willing ta help each Other in Christian discipleship. It invites into its fellowship and activities all students who are eager to find the truth by which to 1 Уе.

Its aim is to confront students with Christ and His Gospel, to lead them to commit themselves to Christ and His way of life, and to unite them in the fellowship of His Church and in the service of the tingdom of God.

Weekly study circles and devotional meetings are held within the ]ranch. Annual conferences and week-end conferences are held in the different States and at Pt. Lonsdale respectively.

An active interest is taken in the work and in the services at local Churches in Mildura and at the Branch service.

On the social side, folk dances, social evenings, hikes and camp fire picnics are held, generally in conjunction with members of local Churches . This offers students fellowship with their own church members.

Camera Club. A dark room and certain equipment is available to members.

Dental Students' Society. Exists for the mutual benefit of all dental students. Arranges social and sporting activities.

Dramatic Club. The Dramatic Club presented "Rope" at the 1947 Drama Festival in Melbourne. It has also presented play readings and sketches in concerts both at the Branch and in Mildura.

It is hoped to expand its activities considerably in X948.

The Engineering Students' Society. Arranges talks, debates, films and excursions of particular interest to Engineers although all students are welcome. Carries on the Melbourne Engineering tradition of end-of-term dances.

Ex-Service Men and Women's Association. This is open to all mеn and women who have served in either of the three services or the Merchant Navy. It is concerned with the welfare of ex-service Personnel and arranges certain social activities during the year.

Main aims include the study of socialist theory and practice ; the application of socialist principles to University affairs and student problems particularly ; furthering the understanding of socialism by education classes, study groups, talks and meetings. The Labour Club takes a keen interest іn student welfare and arranges social and recreational activities, such as hikes, picnics and dances.

Medical Students' Society. Organises lectures, films and discus- sions of interest to medical students, as well as certain social and sporting activities.

Musical Society. The object of the society is to foster all kinds of musical . interest in the Branch. For this purpose it has been con- stituted into four distinct groups.

The Chotal Group forms the choir. A very good range of choral music is available in the Union library.

The Orchestral Group allows those who play any kind of instru- ment an opportunity to cultivate and express their talents. While its activities are not likely to be extensive in a University com- munity of this size, at least this aspect of musićal life is not neglected.

The Rhythm Group exists for those whose interests lie in modern jazz. The activities of this group have so far been confined to listening to records and discussions, formal and otherwise.

The Listeners' Group has held a series of Sunday night recorded recitals in the Cinema. The Union also has facilities for private sessions with a wide range of recordings.

Newman Society of Victoria. A branch of the N.S.У. has been established at Mildura. A constituent part of the University Catholic Federation of Australia, the N.S.У. embraces in its mem- bership all Catholic graduates and undergraduates. It sponsors Masses for students at the beginning of each term, Annual General Communion at the Mildura Parish Church, evening lectures, dis- cussion groups, debates, hikes, picnics, dances and an annual summer school in March.

Swimming Pool

On the far side of the aerodrome which adjoins the Branch there is a large dam used by the Department of Civil. Aviation and the Branch for watering. The D.C.А. authorities have made this dam available to the Branch for swimming, and will permit students to cross the airstrip to the pool on foot or bicycle, provided students wishing to cross first check with the D.C.A. officer on duty. Under no circumstances may motor vehicles be driven across the strip These conditions must be rigidly observed, otherwise this con- cession will be withdrawn.

General

Au students are expected to use common sense as regards their general behaviour, being particularly careful not to cause incon- venience to others or to damage property which has been secured with considerable difficulty for their benefit. The success of the Branch bath as an academic institution and as a community depends on mutual co-operation among all its members. The people of Mildura are doing all they can for the Branch, and it behoves students to use good sense and moderation in their be- h aviour in Mildura.

Commonwealth Reconstruction Training Scheme The University has as a member of its staff as Guidance Officer for ex-service personnel (Mr. W. E. Cremor) . He is available to assist ex-service students, particularly in advising on courses, rights under the Commonwealth Reconstruction Training Scheme, pro- vision of extra tutorial assistance, and generally to help students during their period at the University. The Guidance Officer ,vill not have a permanent representative at the Mildura Branch although either he or his deputy will visit the Branch at regular intervals during the year. Students should endeavour to arrange any mat- ters of concern with the Guidance Officer in Melbourne prior ta their arrival at the Mildura Branch. However, many matters will crop up during the year affecting ex-service students and men students wishing to obtain advice on matters pertaining to the Commonwealth Reconstruction Training Scheme during terms should see the Dead of Men, who will, where necessary, arrange for the student concerned to interview the Guidance Officer on his next visit to the Branch.

Women students should consult the Dean of Women. In urgent matters, the Dean will, if necessary, consult the Guidance Officer T Melbourne by telephone or letter.

The Universities Commission, which is the body charged by the Commonwealth Government with responsibility for administering

г8

(29)

the Reconstruction Training Scheme as it applies to University students, does not, for the present, intend to establish a branch at the Milдuтa Branch of the University. Matters in connection with the payment of living allowance or administration on which a trainee normally deals direct with the Commission should be referred to the Sub-Registrar's office for contact with the Head Office of the Universities Commission. It is proposed during the early portion of the academic year to send to Mildura an officer of the Commission to answer enquiries on matters for which the Com- mission is responsible. Trainees when advised by the University that they are required to proceed to the Mildura Branch, should advise the Commission of the fact, and should take the following action before proceeding to Mildura:

I. Advise the Commission of any change of address to which cheques for payment of living allowance should be forwarded.

2. If an offer of training benefits has not been received, attend at the Commission's office to obtain the necessary documents.

3. If an offer of training benefits has been received, return to the Commission's office the acceptance before proceeding to Mil- dura.

4. Attend to all matters in connection with the books and instru- ment allowance.

5. Make arrangements to obtain the necessary voucher for travel.

If trainees proceed to Mildura without obtaining warrant for travel, claims for the amount of fare involved should be for- warded to the Commission's office in Melbourne on Common- wealth Treasury Form No. z2.

University Appointments Board

The Appointments Board, as well as assisting graduates who are seeking employment, is also responsible for arranging vacation work, during the University long vacation, for men and women desiring to gain practical experience in the work of their courses, or wishing to earn money to help pay their way.
