Preface

The Flinders Un1vers1ty of South Australia was estabhshed by state legislation 1n 1966 and was off1c1ally opened by Her Ma1esty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother on 25 March 1966 The University 1s situated on an attractive sloping site of 165 hectares at Bedford Park 11 kilometres south of the city centre The site affords extensive views towards the central business d1stnct and St Vincent Gulf

The Un1vers1ty commenced operation 1n 1966 with 1ust over 400 students and approxnnately 90 academic staff At that time the academic work of the Un1vers1ty was organised 1n four Schools Language & Literature Social Sciences Physical Sciences and B1olog1cal Sciences

On 1 January 1991 as part of restructuring of higher education in South Australia Fllnders Un1vers1ty merged with the Sturt Campus of the former South Austrahan College of Advanced Education The Un1vers1ty now has over 10 000 students over 500 academic staff and approx1 mately 750 general staff with a total budget of some$75m

Early in 1992 the Un1vers1ty was organised into the following four faculb.es

• Education Humanities Law and Theology

• Health Sciences

0 Science and Engineenng

• Social Sciences

Each faculty 1s governed by a faculty board chaired by an elected Head of Faculty and compns1ng representatives of the academic and general staff and students

A wide range of quahficat1ons is offered through the faculties including bachelors degrees honours degrees graduate certificates, associate

diplomas postgraduate diplomas masters degrees (research and coursework) PhDs and higher doctorates

The University has a diverse and ltvely student population Just over 60% of students are women 1ust over one third of students study on a part time basis and the University has approXImately 700 external students There are approximately 700 overseas students undertaking courses and 1n addition there 1s a rich diversity of ethnic and language backgrounds in the student population Staff of the University have established an enviable record for research Income from external grantJ.ng bodies is approXImately $15m and the Un1vers1ty has one of the best records of any Australian un1vers1ty in attracting external research funding on a per capita basis

In addition to the research earned out by academic staff 1n their faculties the Un1vers1ty has also established a number of special centres 1nclud1ng the Centre for Education and Tra1n1ng on Add1cbon Flinders Institute for Atmosphenc and Manne Sciences Institute for Atomic Studies Institute for Australasian Geodynamics Cancer Research Unit The Centre for Development Studies the Electronic Structure of Materials Centre the South Australian Centre for Econo mies the Centre for Groundwater Studies, the National Institute for Labour Studies the Liver Research Centre the Centre for Mulhcultural Studies the Centre for Neuroscience the Nab.anal Tidal Facility the Pan Pacific Institute the National Centre for Petroleum Geology and Geo physics the Centre for Research 1n the New Literatures 1n Enghsh the Insbtute for the Study of Learning D1fficulhes and the Centre for Transfusion Med1c1ne and Immunology
