Foreword

Welcome to the new OUT Theatre and to the 1997 Dance Graduation season Heaven's Place.

It is our pleasure to present three works by Australian choreographers Rosetta Cook, Graeme Watson and QUT Academy staff member John Utans. Rosetta won the Robert Helpmann Award for Professional Choreographers in 1996 for Tangled Heart and Bodyline , by Graeme Watson, was originally choreographed for Netherlands Dance Theatre.

Heaven's Place is an entirely new work by John Utans which involves all current performance students from the Associate Degree and Bachelor of Arts courses.

It has been a particularly busy and exciting year with the visit of the Tsoying School dance students. In September, the sell-out season of West Side Story proved to be a great experience for all the cast. In August, four students performed brilliantly in Hong Kong as part of the Dance On '97 Festival of Dance Academies. The achievements of our students are a testament to the quality ofteaching and the course design and content. I would like to thank all of the full-time and part-time stafffortheir commitment and energy throughout the year.

Once again this year's graduate are up to the challenge of performing demanding works. The staff are proud of the graduating students' commitment and achievements. Please show them your warmest and most generous support.

Caution and Advice

Remember, in case of emergency, the greatest danger lies in being crushed; therefore, BE CALM, stand up, QUIETLY WALK to and leave by the nearest door marked with an EXIT sign. DO NOT PUSH any person in front of you. Escape doors are all unlocked and the whole audience can leave in less than five minutes. Patrons are reminded that smoking and drinking are not permitted in the theatre during performances. Use of audio and/or video equipment and the taking of photographs is prohibited.

Bodyline

Bodyline was created in 1987 for Nederlands Dans Theater 2 and remounted for the Australian Dance Theatre in 1989. The work investigates dance as a sensory activity which can evoke in the spectator images which transcend the contours, physical presence and motions of the dancer's body. Bodyline attempts to challenge held notions of dance as merely an optical and aural experience. Through detailing the haptic in the choreography it is intended that the distance between the performance and the spectators is reduced and a dance of intimacy experienced. I am indebted to Australian Indigenous Cultures and Asian Cultures in the realisation of Bodyline.

People meet ... and dance. Hidden in the dance are aspects of their relationship usually secret. Revealed is fear, longing, passion, anger, ecstasy, loss and ... love.

Tangled Heart was inspired by the music of the Tango and the contrasting emotions it evokes. The work was originally created for the AI CD Dance Creation '96 Choreographic Competition and won the major prize, The Robert Helpmann Award for Professional Choreographers.

Heaven's Place

In the world today, levels of production and consumption have almost nothing to do with the fulfilment of human needs and everything to do with the gratification of human desires. J.H. Macdonald

When thinking about Heaven many thoughts and images come to mind. Take these thoughts and images and multiply them by the number of people from all the places of this world. An infinite number of possibilities and ideas are revealed. There are however, certain qualities and essences that are universal. A sense of purity, of light, fulfilment, inner peace, knowledge, transcendence and release. Constructs oftime and space evaporate. Order and calm prevail. This can be achieved through meditation, prayer, a long journey, indulging in chocolate or diving into a pool of crystal water. There are times in performance where a dancer may transcend reality and find themselves in moments of pure exhilaration. It is these thoughts and feelings that are portrayed in this work. I hope to take you to another place. I ask you to look, to listen and most importantly to feel.

This work is dedicated with love to William, with whom I have recognised a glimpse of a place called Heaven.
