Using a classical form, writer Mai Hing describes every detail of this modern issue in one of the busiest cities in the world. An expression of a faithful translation is that almost all the things in the original text are reproduced. It is hoped that the translation, through mediation and adjustment of imagery, can evoke the same dynamics, dilemmas and ironies in urban life that are expressed in the original work. I faced great challenges in rendering the Chinese seven-character form, primarily because of the brevity and telegraphic nature of the Chinese language, which allows for the depiction of so many images and ambiguities.

In the title and first line of the Chinese original, Hong Kong is literally described as langman ( ) ("romantic"), but "poetic" is used in the translation to refer to its common characterization as "Oriental pearl". The city has the picturesque Victoria Harbour, which, along with a number of buildings around the coast, is shrouded in fog most seasons. The choice of "poetic" also compensates for the use of the commonly known name "Hong Kong", Xianggang ("fragrant gate"), instead of a literal translation of the word used in the source text, namely Xiangjiang ( , " Fragrant.

To achieve an ironic contrast with the first line that highlights the "poetic" beauty of Hong Kong, the word "pollution" is placed at the beginning of the second line, initiating the description of this problem in this line and the ones that follow. . Without giving the parallel form of the original text, these two lines evoke its spirit by reconstructing a more understandable and vivid image with the same objects. Special efforts are made in lines five and six to reproduce the parallel structure of the original text.

The use of these two words naturally expands the space and horizon of this image, which, together with the addition of 'here' and 'there' at the beginning of the respective lines, indicates that this is not a single scene, but a general urban scene. problem.
