Abstract
Semidetailed airbo¡ne magnetic and
radiometric data from the
Petermann Ranges have been processed and a geologicalinterpretation
carriedout.
The Petermannstudy
area lieswithin
an aboriginal reselve and coversthe
Precambriancrystallins þ¿r.ment of the northern
MusgraveBlock
andthe
southrvest margin of the Amadeus Basin and associated infolded sediments and metasediments. Geological detailis
severelylimited by
extensive sand andaliuvial
cover, and airborne geophysics is the only practical method for mapping the solid geology over much of the aïe4,.Tlie
geophysical data have been reprocessed and presented as greyscaledigital
pixel maps.Interpretation
of these maps using atextural interpretation
scheme has delineatedtwo
major magnetic domains. Each Domain consists of smallertextural
zones based on magnetic character- istics such as amplitude, frequency andlinearity
of anomalies which reflect üthological variations.The
magnetic datais
consistentwith the
regional scalefold
nappestructure
which dominatesthe north
ofthe study
area and much ofthe
southrvestern marginof the
AmadeusBasin.
The interpretedNorthern
Magnetic Domain includesthe
sedimentsof the
Amadeus Basin,the
Pe- termann nappe aswell
as original gneissic andgranitic
basementrocks.
Large scale east-west basement shearing has been delineatedwithin the
basementof the Northern Domain. A
two stage modelfor the
emplacementof the Pottoyu Granite
Complexof the
Musgrave Block is proposed,with
componentsboth pre
andpost
basement shearing,and a further
deep seatedgranitic
intrusion is interpreted as themajor
source ofthe
CobbGravity
Depressionwithin
thestudy
area.The
SouthernMagnetic Domain
correlateswith the high
gradegranulite
gneissesof tlie
l\{usgrave Block and has been subdividedinto
trvo lithomagneticunits
rvhich reflect large scale basemer.tstructure.
The boundary between the Northern and Southern Domains is interpreted asthe
geophysical responseof the
WoodroffeThrust, a major crustal
dislocationin
CentralAustralia.
Current geological information only provides an approximate positionfor
the Thrust rvhereas the geophysical data has been usedto
trace the feature more accurately than previously possiblein
the study area. The extension of the Mann Fault Zonefrom
South Australiainto
theNorthern Territory is
confirmed and localto
semiregional scalefaulting
and foldingis
definedin both
Domains.This
research has shownthat by
detailed reprocessing andinterpretation the
geophysicaldata
can be a usefulaid to
geological mappingin
areas where accessis ümited
and geological controlis
sparse.The
resultsof this project
providethe starting point for
detailed geological mappingin
sections ofthe
aboriginal landin
central Australia.
