KATHERINE HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT BOARD NORTHERN TERRITORY
ANNUAL REPORT
As acting Chairman of the Katherine Hospital Management Board, I take pleasure in presenting the Annual Report for 1989/90 .
BOARD MEMBER CHANGES
The Board was pleased to welcome Dr Peter Short as an appointed member , replacing Mr Oscar Davies
Dr Fred Mcconnel transferred to Darwin after serving on the Board for the past six years . The Board wishes to express its appreciation for the contribution that Dr Mcconnel made towards the Katherine Region .
REDEVELOPMENT
oo, -otc ;2
Approval was granted for the upgrading of the old Maternity Ward and Outpatients at a cost of $1.5 million . The work is proceeding successfully due in part to the excellent staff management which has minimised disruption to services . The Red Cross kiosk has been relocated to a more suitable and central area of the Hospital , allowing Red Cross to provide an upgraded service.
Discussions have taken place regarding the possible refurbishing of Jack Roney Wing next financial year Stage 5 of the upgrading of accommodation units from bedsitters to one bedroom flats was completed.
Members of the Board met with the Kalano Council in November to discuss cross cultural relations and the effect they had
on health delivery . Most people were happy with the inpatient services but expressed reservations about
Outpatient services . It was explained that all outpatients had to be assessed by a sister before being referred to a doctor . It was agreed by all present that the meeting was helpful in airing problems , and a useful exercise .
An increased incidence of TB in the Region has necessitated planning extra services to cope with this workload .
Screening of specific communities will commence early next financial year the results of which could impact heavily on Hospital resources .
KANGAROO 89
In appreciation of the hospital treatment received by several of their men during Kangaroo 89 the 21st
Construction Squadron constructed a pergola outside the staff social club .
PATIENT CARE
Patient care has been provided at a high standard despite difficulty in recruiting and retaining medical staff .
STAFFING
The results of the nurse staffing review confirmed the need for an additional eight positions . These were granted and staffing throughout the year has been satisfactory.
A review of the medical establishment was carried out and the major recommendations were implemented . A lack of permanent medical staff continues to be a problem with no solution in sight .
ROLE DELINEATION
A subcommittee of the Board assisted the Medical
Superintendent in drawing up the role delineation for the Hospital

SPECIALIST VISITS
- - - -- ··--·----···--
The waiting lists for some specialists , particularly in ophthalmology , are a source of concern . The Board hopes that the Department has some success in recruiting to these specialities in the new year
CONCLUSION
Katherine Hospital has had to cope with a good deal of disruption during the year due to the upgrading of certain areas and the high turnover of medical staff , it is to the credit of the remaining staff that the Hospital has
maintained its high level of service delivery
