As part of Phase 1, all on-site dewatering will be used, so category 6 (mine dewatering) is not activated as there is no discharge to the environment. Ore will be mined and trucked to the Run of Mine (ROM) road, then fed through the primary and secondary crushing circuit to a Coarse Ore Stockpile (COS). Flocculent (1270 t/a added at 40 g/t) and coagulant (110 t/a added to reduce the amount of residual flocculent in the process water) will be added to the tailings to aid in the sedimentation of suspended solids.

All decanted and runoff water collected on the tailings beach will be conveyed through gravity settling structures (single settling for Phase 1A) constructed on the upstream face of the main TSF embankment. Discharge in Phase 1 will be down valley discharge on a rolling basis from two discharge points/spouts at the head of the tributary stream valleys at the eastern end of the TSF area. The decanted and runoff water in the TSF will be conveyed through the TSF embankment to the RWP, once the waste disposal is further advanced.

Containment of the accumulated water in the RWP will be achieved by the construction of smaller embankments (16 m and 9.5 m high respectively) approximately 1.5 km downstream of the TSF embankment. All water in the RWP will be pumped to process water basins and reused within the OPF only. An injection curtain at the upstream end of the embankment that ties into the BGM liner will be installed to control seepage as water accumulates along the upstream lower portions of the RWP south embankment.

Pipelines will be buried to a depth of approximately 1.5 mbgl with a minimum cover of 600 mm.

Drainage lines in the region are transient in nature and generally only flow for short durations following rainfall events. Intermittent flows usually occur during the wet season with long periods of no flow during the dry season. Groundwater Groundwater in the TSF valley floor area occurs at depths typically ranging from 2.3 m to 6.6 m with an assumed hydraulic gradient of 1:100 toward the northwest.

Key Findings

The Mining Proposal is not yet endorsed by DMIRS

DMIRS expect PAF and AMD risks for the Project

The works approval application is at variance to DMIRS concerns, and should the design, emissions, or risk to receptors change, an updated Part V approval will be

Tailings characterisation

  • Settling tests not conducted on the 2015 or 2016 samples, noting no samples undertaken since
  • Approximately 40% of the water contained in the slurry is expected to be released from the tailings to flow to the decant pond at discharge
  • There is a considerable distance from the tailings initial deposition to the decant embankment (kms)
  • PAF materials may be present in the waste rock, based on the 2015 and 2016 samples
  • No sulfide or carbonate minerals identified in the oxide tailings sampled
  • Fresh tailings contains significant sulfate mineral fibroferrite and may contain trace sulphide phases
  • DMIRS has not yet approved the Mining Proposal

The oxide tailings were mainly quartz and iron oxide, with no sulphide or carbonate minerals identified. The fresh tailings samples contained a wide variety of minerals and no pyrite (or any other sulphide phase) was detected; however, trace phases may still occur within the tailings, below the XRD detection limit. Approximately 40% of the water contained in the slurry is expected to be released from the tailings to flow to the tailings pond with discharge.

Risk assessment

Dust Nearest receptor is the Atlas Iron Limited Abydos Ore Project accommodation camp located 7 km north east of the mine; and Vegetation along the mine. The Delegated Officer is of the opinion that there is sufficient separation of sensitive receptors, and that the proposed management measures sufficiently mitigate the risk of dust impacts, and is of the opinion that additional regulatory controls are not necessary to mitigate this risk. Noise Nearest receptor is the Atlas Iron Limited Abydos Ore Project accommodation camp located 7 km north east of the mine.

The Delegated Officer notes that the 1997 Environmental Protection (Noise) Regulations apply and believes that there is adequate segregation of sensitive receptors and that additional regulatory controls as such are not required to mitigate this risk. The Delegated Officer is of the opinion that there is sufficient segregation of sensitive receptors and that the proposed control measures adequately mitigate the risk of release to land, and believes that additional regulatory controls are not required to mitigate this risk. Dust The nearest receptor is the Atlas Iron Limited Abydos Ore Project accommodation camp, 7 km northeast of the mine; and vegetation next to the mine.

A sediment trap will be installed at the end of the stock. The authorized officer considers that the proposed management. The nearest receiver is the Atlas Iron Limited Abydos Ore Project accommodation camp, located 7 km north-east of the mine; and vegetation near the mine. The authorized officer believes that there is sufficient separation from sensitive receptors and that the proposed management measures adequately reduce the risk of dust build-up and believes that additional regulatory controls are not necessary to mitigate this risk.

The delegated officer notes that Chinnamon Creek is immediately north of the facility and the area contains numerous drainage lines. The delegated officer notes that an embankment will be installed to the northeast of the TSF equipped with a BGM liner on the upstream face. The delegated officer notes that the RWP is located directly northwest of the TSF.

The Authorized Officer notes that a grout curtain will be installed along the length of the upstream footing of the RWP Jug embankment to control foundation seepage. The maximum total precipitation scenario is not expected to occur during TSF Stage 1 operation.
