PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It is with pride that I present my first report as your President at the Bateau Bay Men’s Bowling Club, Annual General Meeting.

This first year has seen a lot of achievements for which I and your committee are very proud.

The Bowls Committee

At this stage I wish to inform the members on the performance of the Committee Members during the year.

Firstly, Senior Vice President Dean Wilson took on the role of membership and has worked hard to keep the records up to date, not an easy task. The Thursday twilight bowls is a success and all this is appreciated due to the way he and Kevin run the night.

Vice President Rod Masterson took the role of Treasurer and performs his position as a very competent financial expert and also a good raffle organizer.

To Ray Peck who will be the first to volunteer for any work that has to be done. He is a valuable member and supporter of the Committee and regularly brings the family along to help.

Greg Larkin who has been there when we need him throughout the year we all appreciate his input.

Bernie McDonald came to the board and has shown a keen interest in the role and keeps us on the right track for the needs of the members. Thank you for your commitment for the past twelve months.

The Ladies representative, President Liz Cohen has been a valued member and her knowledge and experience being greatly appreciated.

Kevin Trezise with his expertise in Bowls has introduced new ideas and systems that have raised the Bowls Office to a very professional operation.

Too past Presidents Pat Cummins and Noel Post, it is greatly appreciated that they have a continued interest in the running of the Club and take the time to give advise freely to me when need.

Lastly, a special thanks to Lisa Caswell for her support and financial assistance to the Bowling Club and who is willing to listen to any reasonable proposal we put forward and when necessary present and support us at the Canterbury Board.

Bowling Activities

The 2012 Pennant Season was a year we hope to improve upon, but what a difference a year makes. With Kevin taking the reins it was decided to have eight (8) sides in the Pennants. This was the start of rebuilding the Club and we were told the No 1’s had no chance but they made people sit up and eat their words.

The other seven (7) sides performed with great distinction with the number Two Grade finishing equal first but beaten on a count back and two other Grades finishing in the top 3 of their sections – Well done to all who played and made the commitment for the ten weeks. I hope that next year you will see fit again to play and make the commitment.

Bring on 2013 and with the morale shown in the Club we anticipate at least a Zone Flag and hopefully a State one.

(5)

Twilight bowls has been very successful and continued through the winter months and will keep going.

More information on bowls is included in the Tournament report.

Sponsors

Our major sponsors to the Bowls Club for 2011-2012 are Australian Unity, Creighton’s, NeuSolutions/Sea Buoys, Repco/Shelly Beach Auto Centre and B&M Meats from Umina and their support has been very much appreciated. They provide the financial requirements for us to hold the various tournaments during the year.

Pledge Board

This year we introduced a Pledge Board and a number of individuals and/or families have made a commitment of monies to the club so that other tournaments might be held where we have no sponsor and I believe that a big thank you should be shown to these people.

The Backbone of the Club.

During the year there are various activities that need to be addressed and I want to express my gratitude to those members who give up their time to ensure that these activities are carried out. In no special order they are the Coaches, Men and Lady Umpires, Flag Marshalls, Match Committee, Selector, Side Managers and of course the Ladies who spend their Saturdays making sandwiches for the Pennant Players and also help with the Butcher’s Picnic Day.

A Special mention is for our Welfare Office, Peter Salter who does a marvellous job representing the Club. He keeps the members informed and this is very much appreciated.

Nevil Brown is a great asset in the Bowls Office and a wealth of knowledge in assisting Kevin.

These helpers will all be acknowledged at our presentation night.

Our Turf Manager, Darren and his staff a great thank you for the preparation of the Greens and your willingness to make sure our needs are met.

To Lisa and her staff, thank you for the service to our members.

RSL Bowls

Congratulations on your great win this year and your continued support within the Club. I hope we will continue this great comrade.

Web Page

We now have our own web page which has been produced with an extensive amount of help from Les Webster- and a big thank-you for your time and efforts Les. It is only in its infancy but as time progresses it should become better. Please look at the page and note that some of our information will be published there as well as in the usual manner.

Closing

My sympathy goes to all those partners and friends of those members who have passed on during the year. We look forward to seeing the flag at full mast and of course sad to see it at half mast. We hope it remains high for a long time.

Lastly to you the members, I sincerely thank you for your support and encouragement to the committee for the effort they have put in this year. Your financial support in the raffles that are run which helps us provides special events such as the Dinner Dance, Presentation night and the Butchers Picnic, we thank you.

(6)

We have kept you informed of matters that arise at our meetings and this will continue with our next committee.

To my Committee a great thank you for your support and work ethic you have given me this past year.

It may-be a bit early but on behalf of myself and Ruth have a wonderful Christmas and good bowling in 2013.

Tony Hegyi – President

SECRETARY’S REPORT

This has been my second year as secretary and I continue to learn more of the issues affecting our club and the future of bowls generally. One wonders were bowling clubs will be in the next short to medium term as costs, decline in sponsorship and less new members entering the sport are all having an influence on that future.

We have been fortunate at Bateau Bay as we are stable in membership and whilst sponsorship has not been easy Creighton’s have again been a major sponsor and of course Seabouys have also come on board during this season.

It is of the utmost importance that we focus on being a 21st Century Club and look to be innovative in all that we do to ensure that Bateau Bay Men’s Bowling Club is at the forefront of not only our Zone but of Bowls New South Wales and that will be achieved if all members support the committee for 2012/13 and participate when ever and where ever possible in the events and functions the club may put forward.

I would like to thank Canterbury and The Bay Sports Club, Lisa Caswell General Manager and her Supervisors and staff for their continued support to our club and special thanks to all my fellow bowlers who make it a pleasure to not only fulfil my role as secretary but for their friendship.

Bill Halliday – Secretary.

SELECTOR REPORT 2012

This year was an interesting year for the Pennant Grades with the results being:

Ones - 5

th

in Section beating some more fancied teams

Twos - equal 1 in Section – beaten by rules in the Conditions of Play Threes - 2

nd

in Section

Fours - 2

nd

in Section Fives - 2

nd

in Section Six (1) - 3

rd

in Section Six (2) - 2

nd

in Section Seven (1) - 2

nd

in Section Seven (2) - Better luck in 2013

The efforts and outcomes didn’t finish with the Ones; every side was able to produce finishes that they should be proud off.

The fours were close to winning their Section. One point separated the top four sides in their section. This was reflected in a number of the other side who if they had one more win under their belts might have been sections winners and gone on to play for the Zone Flag.

The Players who nominated for the 2012 Pennant season included a number of new bowlers and they showed their resolve and will only become stronger players.

I thank the Pennant Team Managers.

A Special thanks to the Lady Sandwich Makers who produced food that was enjoyed at the end of the day by our home teams and visitors alike.

With this sort of effort we can look to a great year in 2013 – So nominate and become a part of the history of the Bateau Bay Men;s Bowling Club Pennant History.

Kevin Trezise – Chairman.

UMPIRE’S REPORT

As usual the Umpire’s in this Club have performed to a very high standard at the various events that they have been officiating. The Club Championships, Pennants and Zone events held at this Club could not be held without the time that these persons give so freely.

I am happy to say that the workload is spread between 21 umpires which again is very pleasing to have.

We are the Club with the largest number of active umpires in the Zone and set the benchmark for other clubs to aspire too.

I thank the membership for their support and encourage any member who wishes to learn more about the game to see me and become an Umpire.

Your current list of Umpires are; Jock ANDERSON, Jason BAYLDON, Ted BAMBURY, John BOURKE, Greg COTT, Geoff COURTNEY, Geoff GRAHAM, Dick HEATHER, David HENDERSON, Gary LANGHAM, Bill LARKIN, Ron LEWIS, Rod MASTERSON, Bruce MUDIMAN, Gordon MURRAY, Ron NUNN, Allan ROBINSON, Peter SALTER, Carey SEWELL and Dean WILSON.

TOURNAMENTS / VISITATIONS 2011 – 2012.

With the Support of our Sponsors – Australian Unity, Creighton’s, NeuSolutions/Seabouys, Repco/Shelly Beach Auto Centre B & M Meats at Umina and the Pledge Board we held our usual tournaments during the term of this committee. The response from our Members and the Members from the various Clubs in the Zone was very encouraging. The weather also made the playing of the various tournaments very enjoyable in most cases.

The Major Tournaments – Hibiscus, Sea Buoy triples and Jack Pateman Men’s Triples were a success regarding sponsorship and players.

This year we will have had visitations from Penrith RSL (cancelled wet weather), Nelson Bay Travelling Bowlers, Bulldogs Leagues Club Bowlers, Kingswood and Revesby Bowlers. It was a great response from the members to make these bowlers feel welcome. Some have already indicated their intention to return in 2013.

These events are only a success with the support of the Men and Lady Bowlers of the Bateau Bay Bowling Club and a special thank-you to the Committee members who give up their time to put on these days and make sure that they run smoothly. A big thank-you to Kevin Trezise our Bowls Co-ordinator who makes these days look and run professionally.

WELFARE REPORT

2011/12 has again been a busy year for the welfare of our members. Sadly we have lost some very popular and dedicated bowlers over the last 12 months.

From September 2011 to September 2012 we have seen the passing of some 7 male bowlers.

Along with these guys there was the passing of some elder statesmen of our bowling club in the passing Happy Salter and Percy Maloney whose memberships had lapsed but were still seen around the Club.

As time passes it is easy to forget the efforts of these past members. When you read the Vale List in this report please take a few moments to reflect on their significant contributions in the past.
