Ministerid Statement. c2S NOVEMBER 1 Ministerial

Crisis.

1155

The P K E M I E R : I feel I ought, pwhaps, to apologise to the House for not having taken action immediately after the vote of last night ; but I decline to act on impulse. I desired to fully weigh the rmponsibilities of the whole potiition, and my colleagues and I have arrived a t the concli~sion that, after the vote of last night---viewing i t ae a deliberate expression of opinion of the House on the conduct of public business, and distinctly as a vote not in any way connrcled with the parliamentary rail- ways standing committee, that had been pre- viously disposed of-viewing i t as a deliberate vote, t o which I emphatically attached political significance, and informed hon. members in what light i t would be regarded b y the Government, and seeing that we had only a majority of one, t h e Government will not b e inclined to continue the administration of affairs a t the present time.

Therefore, I ask now t h a t the House do, a t its rising, adjourn till Tuesday next, with a view to giving t h e Government time to consider the future position.

HONOURABLE MEMBERS : Hear, hear ! Mr. DAWSON (L’havtcrs Towers) : I may say

I

have no objection whatever to the mution moved by the Premier.

The TREASURE^^ : You should feel happy.

Mr. DAWSOY : I do feel happy.

MEMBERS of the Opposition : Hear, hear ! hlr. DAWSON : I have no objection what- ever to allowing the hon. gentleman sufficient time to consider the position of the Government.

But I thought he had had sufficient time, before making the statement this afternoon, to con- sider what he was going to do. I suppose, however, that when we meet again he wili make a statement of his intentions.

T h e PREMIER: Merely make an announce- ment.

Mr. DAWSON : If I understand the reason of the mntion, i t is that the Governnient want time to consider the position, and are not going to carry on the business with a majority of one.

The PREMIER : Certainly not.

Mr. DAWSON : I have no objection to giving them time, but I hope it will he thoroughly understood by memhers on both sides t h a t when we reassemble on Tuesday the position of the Government will be explained by the Premier.

The PREMIER : Perhaps by you.

The TREASURER : You may be Premier then.

Mr. DAWSON : That will be impossible-on MEMBERS on the Government side : Prepare.

Mr. DAWSON : It is not a laughing matter.

Mr. BROWNE : “Many a true word is spoken in jest,” though.

Mr. DAWSON : I want i t to be understood that when we reassemble on Tuesday we shall have a clear statement from the Premier on the position taken n p by t h e Government. While I have no objection to giving time now, if there is no statement made on Tuesday I will have some objection.

Mr. K A T E S (Cunningham) : I congratulate the hon. gentleman a t the head cf the Govern- ment on the wise a,nd honourable step he has taken. It is nothing but what I expected from the hon. gentleman. H e could hardly carry on the business of the House jn an honourable way with a majority of one, and I trust he will take such steps as will redound to the dignity of the Governnient and their supportps.

RESIGNATION OB. THE GOVEBNMENT.

HON. G. W. G R A Y : I beg to move that the Council, a t its rising, do adjourn until Tuesday next. Tn moving this motion, I have to apolo- gise for the absence of the Hon. the Postmaster- General, who is unavoidably unable to be present.

Conaequently i t devolves upon me to announce that on Saturday last the Ministry tendered their resignation to His Excellency the Lieutenant- Governor. The occasion which led up to this was a very important motion in another place, moved by the leader of the Labour Opposition, upon which a division was taken which resulted in the Goverument having a majority of one.

Under the circumstances i t behoved the Govern- ment to consider their position; and after well considering it, they decided to tender their resignation. A t present, hon. gentlemen, I have nothing further LO state to the Council.
