Congratulations

ACT Indoor Qualifiers

Finalists M. McLean and A. Tonkin

Finalists C. Morrison and G. Young

2nd, 3rd June saw the ACT Indoor Qualifiers being held at our club after many years being run on Weston Creek’s carpet. As predicted, there were many more entries and it is sure to get bigger numbers still if held at CBC in the future. The weather on Saturday was very cold and greens were running fast. The winners, Mac McLean and Chloe Morrison will travel to Tweed Heads in August to represent the ACT in the Australian Indoor Competition. We wish them both all the best in their endeavours. Thank you to all the club members who helped to run

the competition, cooking, umpiring, or marking.

The competition ran smoothly and without incident and your contribution was much appreciated. Well done everyone.

ACT Men and Women’s 60+ Fours

The Women’s 60+ Fours was once again held at our club. The first day, Tuesday 5th June, was cold and damp after a fairly mild morning start.

The second day was cold but not as much moisture in the air. The Final came down to a contest between last year’s winners and a Yowani team Skipped by Norma Blunden. The Canberra team were holding a good six point lead when on the fourth last end Yowani drew beautifully to the jack to score five shots. Each team scored a single on the next two consecutive ends. On the last Canberra was still one up and held three close shots when Norma trailed the jack back and sat shot. Mina’s last was a tad too heavy and Norma drew a second shot to win the title this year. Congratulations to all players in the tournament. The 60+ Fours and Pairs have to be two of the most popular ACT contests for the ladies each year.

M. Higgs, G. Stenner, V. Dalton, K. MaCaskill, N. Blunden, G. Young, L. Waters, M. Bannerman

Once again the off green volunteers are thanked for their contribution in helping everything run smoothly and enjoyable for everyone.

R. Jackson, M. Brookman, D. Lindbeck, D. Kimber

The Men played their 60+ Fours at Weston Creek on the same two days. Canberra fielded one team Skipped by Dave Lindbeck along with a team for City, playing as City for the last time.

After coming in fifth after the first day Dave and the team ended up against Weston Creek’s team who were all over the jack in the Final. Well done chaps. A big effort everyone.

Men’s Handicap Singles

Congratulations to Ken Derbyshire on taking out this year’s title. There were some very good draw bowling on exhibition in a couple of the games but it was Ken’s on-shots which won the day. Ken has been using his through the head bowling in his social game of late and it seems that the practice has come in handy when needed. Well done all, especially Ken.

Australian Open

Congratulations to two of our younger members, Alex Tonkin and Chris Barritt- Eyles who entered the Australian Open for the second year. Chris narrowly missed out on progressing after the sectional rounds in the Men’s Singles, but did very well. Alex on the other hand won through to be one of the last 64 players out of over 1000 players in the Men’s Singles, going down to the eventual tournament runner up, Sean Baker. The Pair didn’t progress beyond the sectional rounds but did themselves proud in their playing. Well done guys. It is great to see members giving it a go in some of the top tournaments on offer around the country.

Bugsy’s Tech Notes

One of the advantages of moving to NBN with a higher speed hopefully is being able to choose more options in the way you get streaming services to your TV. One of those being a Fetch box which is relatively cheap compared to something like Foxtel. This will not get you sports that are local but it can deliver virtually anything else. From documentaries, movies to kids channels. Foxtel have also introduced Foxtel Now which is the same thing. Basically streaming services to their packages which are slightly cheaper than their satellite services. But if you want sports it is going to cost at least $30 a month where the cheaper packages are $15.

So basically all the streaming services that allow multiple devices streaming come in at around that mark. Approximately $12- $15 a month range. Of course this is only viable if you have decent speeds on your internet

connection. So to go with a mid-range plan is always the best option on NBN it might cost an extra $20 a month but it allows all the versatility in the world in what content you can choose to watch via the internet with a family that might be watching different content at the same time.

Keeping in mind the money saved on old phone line rental is best spent on getting extra speed if you are an avid net user.

Featured web site this month is for translating other web sites into printable pages. You know how sometimes you find a good recipe and it sometimes prints like toilet roll that has become unhinged. Well this site cleans it up in a way that removes most ads and makes it legible and it can be saved as a pdf file as well. You just post the url into its box and it does the rest. Then you get the chance to delete unwanted pictures or paragraphs of text if you so choose before you save or print it. It has now become one of my

favourites. www.printfriendly.com Greg Bourke (Bugsy)

ACT Men and Women’s Pairs

CBC had one entry in the Men’s Pairs and three teams in the Women’s Pairs. Sadly the men got knocked out by the slimmest of margins 22-21 in the first round. The ladies fared better with all three winning through to the second round and one team still in the Semi-Final after defeating the strong team from Weston Creek of Margaret Bacchetto and Sharon Harmer in the Qtr-Final on

Sunday 26th June. The Semi-Finals and Final will be played on Saturday 30th June at QRSLM, starting 9.00 am. Good luck ladies.
