CONDITIONS OF THE ACADEMIC FELLOWSHIP SCHEME

What is the value of the Academic Fellowship?

Each Academic Fellowship is valued at $25,000 over one calendar year.

How is the grant paid?

The Academic Fellowship Grant is paid via an internal transfer initiated from within the Office of the Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International) to the budget centre of the relevant academic unit.

What can the fellowship be spent on?

Each Academic Fellow has different needs in terms of supporting the proposed teaching project and therefore the grant can be used to support the fellowship in numerous ways. However, it is expected that most of the funding will be used to release the Fellow from normal teaching responsibilities. The Head of Unit and the Assistant Vice Chancellor (Academic & International) must sign off on the final budget. This means that each Academic Fellow needs to negotiate with their line manager how they will be released to fulfill the specific terms of their fellowship.

Where the Fellowship is collaborative, all line managers and relevant parties must agree to participation and the allocation of the funding.

What equipment can I purchase with the funding?

The fellowship is not normally intended for the purchase of minor equipment. However, if minor equipment is absolutely central to the project and has been approved in the budget, then as a rule no more than 20% of the funding can be spent on equipment. All equipment purchases must follow normal Massey University policies and procedures. At the end of the fellowship the Office of the Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International) reserves the right to return purchases of minor equipment to the equipment pool maintained by the Educational Technology Unit.

Does the Scheme fund travel and accommodation?

A maximum of $5000 of the fellowship grant can be spent on travel and accommodation which must directly support the project and/or dissemination of the outcomes. Awardees are expected to contribute to professional development events sponsored by Centres for Teaching and Learning and the budget needs to make provision for disseminating the results of the project within the Massey community by ensuring sufficient funding is available for a presentation on at least one other campus.

What commitments does an Academic Fellow have to make?

In accepting the award each Academic Fellow commits to:

• Completing the terms of the specific fellowship in the timeline set out in the Fellowship Agreement.

• Developing and maintaining a blog, website and/or e-portfolio that reports and represents the work being undertaken.

• Obtaining appropriate ethics approval for the project where this is required.

• Providing quarterly highlights reports against project milestones.

• Participating in scholarship of teaching and learning round table discussions

• Presenting the outcomes of the project to other staff at a minimum of two Massey University professional development events.

(2)

• Presenting the project findings on a relevant teaching and learning website.

• Disseminating the project findings at an appropriate national or international teaching and learning related conference.

• Sharing your findings and insights through at least one peer reviewed publication in an appropriate teaching and learning related journal or through a relevant conference paper.

What commitments does your academic unit need to make?

Your line manager will be asked to sign a form agreeing to ensure that Academic Fellows are released from a significant amount of their teaching responsibilities for the agreed time. Each Academic Fellow is likely to manage their workflow differently, but it is important that funding allocated to the fellowship leads directly to the ability to dedicate sufficient release time to complete the project deliverables. During the period of the fellowship recipients will continue to work from their office, although regular contact with staff in the teaching and learning centres is essential. You will report to the Director of the National Centre for Teaching and Learning for the term of the Fellowship (proportionate).

What support is available to Academic Fellows?

The National Centre for Teaching and Learning along with the relevant campus centre will support Academic Fellows by providing professional mentoring, access to relevant literature, ethics application support, peer review of outputs, co-authoring of publications, international networking, identification of relevant conferences, administrative and technical assistance, media development, project website hosting, and active participation in professional development activities.

What limitations are placed on Academic Fellows?

To support innovation and equitable uptake of the Academic Fellowship Scheme across the University, Academic Fellows are not entitled to reapply for another Fellowship for a period of five years from the completion of their previous fellowship.
