Welcome to Luminous Shadows, our first season in the new Creative Indus- tries Faculty, where collaboration, partnerships and cultural exchanges will play increasingly significant roles.
In the climate of Creative Industries and globalisation, international connec- tions are important for our students and particularly our graduates. 2001 has seen a fruitful international collaboration between students from LaSalle- SIA College of the Arts in Singapore and students from OUT. In late June,
dance lecturer and choreographer John Utans accompanied nine students to Singapore on a four week exchange of choreographic explorations. Georgia Stewart, performance pyschologist in Dance, also travelled to Singapore. Her role was crucial in quickly and effectively establishing rapport and understandings between the participants from each institution, through a series

activities which provided an empathetic support system for staff and students. The culmination of the Singapore visit was a studio showing of the fully produced work you will see tonight;
Number 14: Notebooks. We warmly welcome Dr Stephanie Burridge, lecturer in Dance, and the six dancers from LaSalle-SIA to the Creative Industries Faculty and look forward to reciprocat- ing the wonderful hospitality shown to OUT Dance in Singapore. Although only six students perform in the Brisbane season, Number 14: Notebooks also has a parallel life and will be performed this month by another cast, in Singapore.
Such creative partnerships are at the core of Luminous Shadows. Closer to home, internation- ally acclaimed choreographer and OUT Dance graduate Natalie Weir has collaborated with eminent Melbourne-based designer Michael Pearce, and composer and Head of Creative In- dustries Music, Andy Arthurs, to produce a powerful, theatrical work. Michael Pearce has also worked closely with choreographers Csaba Buday and John Utans from concept to completion in the creation of their works, with lecturer Shaaron Boughen contributing to costume designs.
Lighting designer Jason Organ provides a fundamental and integral component of the creative partnership in all three works.
Luminous Shadows features musical collaboration in all the works premiered, with OUT music student Yanto Browing composing original music for the soundscape of Poetics of Space and Sydney-based sound installation artist George Poonkhin Khut for Number 14: Notebooks. The inclusion of live music on stage, and in the studio during the creative process for The One Apart, is the result of a most enjoyable and productive working relationship with Creative Industries Music students and staff and one which will continue to grow in future productions.
The most intense collaboration occurs, of course, between the choreographer and the dancers where an ongoing process of transformation and negotiation takes place. From an initial
con-
cept introduced by the choreographer, through material developed with the performers to the final product, the symbiotic relationship between dancer and choreographer is essential to a successful realisation of the work. In Luminous Shadows the dynamic interchange which took place in the rehearsal studio is reflected through strong and committed performances in all three premieres.
This season continues the recent tradition of presenting work in the foyer in another context and medium, and for 2001 John Utans conceived the idea of an installation of televisions. As videographer, he filmed a series of solos choreographed by himself in collaboration with the dancers. Please take time to catch a glimpse of these solos on televisions near you.
I would like to thank the dance staff of OUT who provide the invaluable training and learning environment for the students. The indisputabe quality of our graduates is a testament to the skills, commitment and expertise of these lecturers in Creative Industries Dance. Finally, thank you to all the students involved in Luminous Shadows. To those of you who are graduating we wish you all the best in your future endeavours and look forward to continued contact with you as OUT Dance alumni.

Gaston Bachelard 's magical book "The Poetics of Space" has been my
nspiration
and resource behind creating this work.
t is an investigation focused on the house- its interior spaces- the journey from Cellar to Attic.
The piece explores how many of us may respond physically and or emotion- ally within these intimate spaces.

Choreographer's Notes
This piece was choreographed in Singapore in July. In making this work - inbringing together two groups of dancers from different parts of the world, I did not wish to address any issues or strategies that usually surround a
"collaborative-cross-cultural project" , but rather make a dance-work for a
group of very talented artists .
When I watch somebody dancing I am always interested in seeing the person, his or her choices and decisions. Contributions made by the dancers often reflect a sense of their histories and their desires for the future . I wanted to give the piece a sense of time and space, an impression of distance , of diminishing and disappearing. Placing dancers side by side , subtle shifts and changes occurred in the dancers themselves and in the phrases they were dancing. In giving the dance and the dancers space , it actually revealed the differences and the similarities of a cultural
inheritance, the desires and priorities from one dancer to another regardless of nationality. (The bus in which I travelled everyday, to and from LASALLE, where I daydreamed and formulated these ideas was the Number 14 bus from Orchard Road.)

CSABABUDAY
A graduate of the Australian Ballet School , Csaba per- formed with The Australian Ballet, the Sadlers Wells Royal Ballet and the Australian Ballet Dancers' Company before joining Australian Dance Theatre (ADT) in 1984. During his 9 years with ADT he danced in numerous works by notable Australian and international choreographers includ- ing world acclaimed dance maker William Forsythe (Frank- furt Ballet) . In 1993 , Csaba joined Dance North and from
1995- September 2000 he was a member of Leigh Warren and Dancers.
Since 1984 Csaba has choreographed a total of 26 works for both profes sional dance companies and tertiary institutions within Australia and overseas, as well as teaching/lecturing at these establishments. He is a 1999 Choreo- graphic Fellowship recipient awarded to him from the Choreographic Centre , Canberra.
Csaba is currently the 'Artist in Residence' at The Hong Kong Academy For Performing Arts where alongside his teaching duties he is creating 2 new works for the Academy. The first work will premiere in Singapore before being performed in Hong Kong (December 2001 } , the second to
be performed at the Oanses de Mai Festival, Paris (May 2002) .
JOHN UTANS MFA, QUT
John has performed with and choreographed for many of the leading dance and theatre companies throughout Aus- tralia including The West Australian Ballet Company, Aus- tralian Contemporary Dance Company, Human Veins Dance Theatre, Splinters , Danceworks , Australian Dance Theatre, Queensland Theatre Company, Queensland Ballet and Expressions Dance Theatre. He has also re-
ceived funding for performance and choreographic development projects from the Australia Council for the Arts.
John was a participating choreographer in the 1988 International Course
forProfessional Choreographers and Composers directed by Jonathon Bur-
rows and Kevin Volans held in Yorkshire, England. In March 2000 he travelled
to Adelaide and Glasgow where he was a member of Choreolab - a month
long workshop and performance project jointly facilitated by the Adelaide Fes-
tival and New Moves Dance Festival, Scotland. John has recently completed
an MFA degree in Visual Arts and has exhibited video and sound installations
at the Bundaberg Arts Centre, The University of Queensland Art Museum
Gallery and the CAST Gallery in Hobart, Tasmania. One of his most memora-
ble performances was in Don Asker's dance/theatre work "Bending the Wil-
low" at the Victorian Arts Centre , in which Michael Pearce also performed.
NATALIE WEIR
Natalie Weir was born in Australia and has been cho- reographing professionally for 16 years. She was trained at the Ann Roberts School of Dance in Townsville , and completed an Associate Diploma in Performing Arts at the Queensland University ofTech- nology in Brisbane. She was a founding member of Expressions Dance Company and was offered her first choreographic commission at the age of 18 by

atalie has worked extensively throughout Australia, creating work for most of the country's major Classi- cal and Contemporary Dance Companies, including
The Australian Ballet, the West Australian Ballet Company, Expressions Dance Company, Australian Dance Theatre, Dance North and TasDance. Natalie was also Choreographer in Residence for the Queensland Ballet.
American Ballet Theatre premiered her ballet 'Jabula' in New York and last year Natalie created 'His Weeping ' for the American Ballet Theatre's Studio Company followed this year by 'Bitter Moon'. Most recently she created 'Rite of Spring ' for the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and has made a new work for the Houston Ballet.
Natalie is presently Choreographer in Residence for The Australian Ballet. She has created three major works for the company so far.
The One Apart' is Natalie's sixth work for QUT.
MICHAEL PEARCE - Set and Costume De- signer
ichael Pearce is a set and costume designer, visual art- ist and occasional performer. He designs for dance, thea- tre and opera throughout Australia and recent designs have included the Canadian choreographer James Kudelka's
"The Book of Alleged Dances" and Stephen Baynes ' "at
the Edge of Night" both for The Australian Ballet winning Green Room Awards in Melbourne for the best Dance Design . He also designed Stephen Baynes' "The Fold" for the Queensland Ballet in 1999. He is a frequent collabora- tor with Douglas Wright in New Zealand , with the dance/
theatre/film work "Forever" seen at the Sydney Festival.
He has also been a constant collaborator with Australian Dance Theatre and
Dance North. Other designs include "A Room of One's Own " with Pamela
Rabe as Virginia Woolf for The Melbourne Theatre Co/State Theatre Co. of S.A. He has designed Glen Tetley's "Revelation and Fall" for the Netherlands Dance Theatre and a Cantonese language "Two Gentleman of Verona" for the Hong Kong Arts Festival.
In 1998/99 Michael had a 4 month Asialink performing arts residency, teach- ing design at The Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema and assisting stu- dents design a production of David Williamson's "Travelling North ". In 1997 he designed a cross cultural collaboration "Through the Eyes of The Phoenix"
with Cheryl Stock and the Dance Theatre of Vietnam and again in 2000 de- signing and mentoring a project of 7 new works by emerging Vietnamese choreographers.
Michael's most recent solo exhibition, a drawing installation "Flow" at
tCounihan Gallery in Brunswick, Melbourne in 2000 was influenced by his Ha- noi residency.
Michael was an original creator and performer with the movement perform- ance trio Chrome who have performed throughout Australia, Europe and U.S.A.
His most recent performance was in Don Asker 's dance/theatre work "Bend- ing the Willow "(which he also designed) at the Victorian
Arts Centre, in which John Utans also performed . The Poetics of Space Costume Designer
SHAARON BOUGHEN BA (Hons) Dance, London. MA Dance, LSCD, Uni of Sussex, London
Shaaron is a performer, teacher and choreographer and
has worked extensively in the UK and Australia. She lectures in contemporary dance , choreographic studies, alignment and repertoire at QUT's Dance Pro gram and from 1994 -1999 collaborated with many artists to choreograph perform and curate for The Cherry Herring , Brisbane's first collective of inde- pendent dance artists . Shaaron also received a commission from the Bris- bane Powerhouse in 2000 for her work BLEEDING-A-PART performed at the inaugurall'attitude 27 .5° season.
Shaaron is the Queensland Dance reviewer for The Australian and also writes
for Realtime. She has received grants from The Australia Council, Arts Queens-
land and QUT for choreographic work and since returning to Australia has
choreographed over 30 works. Shaaron continues to be an active participant
on a number of committees, boards and other working parties designed to
establish and promote dance in Australia.
ANDY ARTHURS
Andy Arthurs is an internationally-renowned musician and academic and took up the position of Head of Music in 1997, after five years at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music as Coordinator of Music Technology.
As a composer, Andy has been successful with arts council grants in Britain and Australia for cross-disciplinary projects. This includes major projects with the music and contemporary dance group La Bouche. Within the Academy, Andy composed music for the Dance performances of Narcissus and zzZOOM.
ver 22 years , Andy has published for most major international record labels by way of composing for CDs; multimedia productions, music and sound production for CDs; music and sound production for film, video and television ; performances on record ; sound design and engineering and/or soundscapes . He recently worked on the multimedia encyclopaedia Sesame. Additionally, Andy has published more than 250 of his songs since 1974.
During his career in the UK , Andy worked with industry leaders such as
Beatles producer George Martin and Brian Eno. As a tonmeister, Andy has
worked with leading classical music groups and composers such as John
Cage and Luciano Serio.
