Destination Daintree Art Prize 2012 / Entries Close: 5th October, 2012The Destination Daintree Art Prize is an initiative of Douglas Arts Inc., a community based visual arts association in Tropical North Queensland’s sugar town Mossman, which lies on the outskirts of the spectacular Daintree Rainforest.
Artists and photographers are invited to submit up to two pieces of original work which promote the diversity, beauty and inspirational qualities of the Daintree Rainforest – the oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforest in the world.
There will be a major prize of $2,000 selected from all entries, and a $500 cash prize for the winner in each category.

TWELVE Project, Collaborative Community Art Making / various locations across the Mackay Region.Twelve months, twelve places, twelve stories. Help us to digitally document the Mackay Region by participating in this exciting project. By standing in the same spot each month a photograph is taken to capture that moment in time, the changes that come and the people who visit. More perspectives are sought and people are asked to document one or more of the locations as they live their lives throughout the year. Submissions will be accepted in digital format and specific guidelines for digitizing will be provided. A website is being established to host a selection of the contributions as well as images, video and sound being uploaded via sharing sites such as (Flicker, Vimeo, ABC Pool). The twelve stories are yet to be discovered, will you help us? It is free to be involved in this project. Sunday in the Park / Third Sunday of each Month. 2pm - 4pm. Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens. Tropical Sun Lawn, adjacent to the main entrance, 9 Lagoon Street, come along with a friend, bring your instrument/s and relax in the open air in the beautiful Botanic Gardens, 2-4pm August 19th and September 16th 2012. Refreshments are available at the Lagoon’s café, now under new management. This not for profit event, now in its fifth year, provides a platform for entertainers of all persuasions to appear live on stage in front of a receptive audience to gain public exposure, confidence and experience. The group is led by Dave Wilson who supplies the sound gear. Each month is different as a variety of musicians add their own flavour to the mix. The afternoon is run by the blackboard system, three songs per person initially. Earthly Creations Exhibition / 3 July - 31 July 2012 at the Botanic Gardens Lagoons Gallery and Café, , open Wednesday to Sunday 9am to 4pm. The Earthly Creations Exhibition features in the Botanic Gardens during the month of July, complimenting the Festival of Arts 2012 theme ‘Earthly Delights’.Three artists using different mediums, but with a common link to the earth will combine their work in an exhibition at Lagoons Gallery and Café 3 July-31 July 2012. Jenny de Thomasis is an ephemeral artist who creates 2D and 3D works using natural materials and/or found objects. Lalune Croker is a sculptural ceramicist whose work is inspired by the natural world. Pam Hutley is a weaver of rugs created using her hand spun wool yarns, which are dyed with roots dug from the earth, leaves and insects. “Capturing Light”: A Photographic Exhibition by David Phillips / 29 August – 30 September 2012:Wednesday – Sunday… 9am – 4pm. Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens Lagoons Gallery and Café. The ‘Capturing Light’ Exhibition will feature stunning photographs from Mackay, NSW and WA taken by local landscape photographer David Phillips during the past 12 months. David has the drive to continually face those early morning hours in his pursuit to capture idyllic light. David is a member of the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers (AIPP) and is also a member of the local Creative Shots Photography Club. David has had a previous exhibition at the Lagoons Gallery and the images were magnificent. Children can use the activity trail to explore the exhibitions on display, drawing and writing as they go, then keep the booklet as a fun souvenir of their visit. Avant Card Arts Project / This project was set up to provide national exposure for emerging Australian artists, and to showcase fantastic postcard images onto our displays. We like to promote diversity, and successful images are chosen on their ability to inspire, innovate, inform or intrigue the general public. Creative Australia Artists Grants / The Australia Council for the Arts is pleased to launch the Creative Australia Artists Grants, a five year program of funding which delivers to artists the Federal Government’s budget commitment of $10 million in new funding to the arts. The program will support artists, including young and emerging artists, across all artforms to deliver new artistic works, undertake fellowships and create additional presentations to Australian audiences over the next five years, commencing this year, as part of the Government’s commitment to invest in a creative Australia.
