PhD Studentship in Neurogenetics

We are looking for a motivated student for a Health Research Council funded PhD studentship in Genetics within the Institute of Fundamental Sciences, Massey University.

Our research is focused around investigation of the molecular mechanisms that underpin the formation and storage of memory. An emerging body of evidence indicates that the acetylation state of specific histone marks influences whether memories can be formed or not. Moreover, histone acetylation is dysregulated in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease.

Our current research involves characterisation of the role of histone modifying enzymes in long-term memory. We use the model organism Drosophila, which is ideal for studying memory due to its tractability to genetic analysis and the reproducible memory assays that have been developed.

We have recently demonstrated that overexpression of histone deacetylase 4 (HDAC4) in the Drosophila brain impairs long-term memory. HDAC4 activity is regulated by subcellular shuttling, and intriguingly, a pool of HDAC4 is present at the synapse, suggesting it also plays a non-nuclear role. This project involves investigating the role that HDAC4 plays in memory formation. Several experimental approaches will be used, including genetic screening to identify genes that interact genetically with HDAC4 and/or regulate HDAC4 subcellular localisation in neurons; transcriptome analysis to identify downstream gene targets; and behavioural analyses following genetic manipulation of HDAC4 expression in subregions of the fly brain.

Applicants should have a BSc (Hons) or MSc (Hons) degree in molecular biology or genetics. A background in neuroscience and/or Drosophila genetics would be an advantage.

The scholarship is a three year funded position with a stipend of $NZ 25,000 per annum plus fees. International students are welcome to apply. Non-native English candidates must have an appropriate English language qualification.

Applications, including a CV and full contact details of two academic referees, should be sent to Dr Helen Fitzsimons, Institute of Fundamental Sciences, Massey University by 15 Feb 2013. Email: h.l.fitzsimons@massey.ac.nz
