T h e l e v e l s o f c l o v e r s c o r c h w e r e h i g h e r t h a n l a s t y e a r w i t h o n l y 6% of i n t r o d u c t i o n s s c o r i n g 3 . 0 o r l e s s ( 8 % i n 1 9 8 6 ) , a n d 18% o f c r o s s b r e d clovers s c o r i n g 3 . 0 o r l e s s ( 2 9 % i n 1 9 8 6 ) . T h e r e a s o n m a y w e l l b e d u e t o t h e broad s p e c t r u m o f K a b a t i e l l a s t r a i n s u s e d f o r i n o c u l a t i n g t h e p l o t s t h i s year.

S e l e c t i o n s w h i c h c o u l d h a v e b e e n t o l e r a n t o r r e s i s t a n t t o p r e v i o u s l y used s t r a i n s m a y s h o w m r o e d i s e a s e w h e n a t t a c k e d b y m a n y strains.

T r e e t o n w a s little

a f f e c t e d b y P h y t h i u m a n d F u s a r i u m b u t w a s v e r y s u s c e p t i b l e t o Phytophthora.

A m o r e a c c u r a t e measure t h a t i n c o r p o r a t e s b o t h t o l e r a n c e a n d r e s i s t a n c e t o p a t h o g e n a t t a c k i s plant growth.

T h e e f f e c t o f e a c h p a t h o g e n o n p r e - e m e r g e n c e d a m p i n g o f f a n d p l a n t ,survival a l s o v a r i e d w i d e l y . F u s a r i u m a v e n a c e u m h a d n o e f f e c t ( m e a n s u r v i v a l o f 60 v a r i e t i e s - 103%) w h i l e R h i z o c t o n i a s o l a n i h a d a s m a l l e f f e c t (73% survival), a n d P y t h i u m i r r e g u l a r e h a d a m a j o r e f f e c t ( 3 4 . 5 % s u r v i v a l ) . T h e r a n g e in s u r v i v a l o f v a r i e t i e s i n t h e p r e s e n e o f P y t h i u m i r r e g u l a r e w a s 7% t o 97%.

P h y t o p h t h o r a c l a n d e s t i n e a r e t h e m a j o r r o o t p a t h o g e n s w i t h R h i z o c t o n i a s o l a n i a l s o c a p a b l e o f c a u s i n g s e r i o u s r e d u c t i o n s i n p l a n t p e r f o r m a n c e . F u s a r i u m a v e n a c e u m h a s n o t c a u s e d s i g n i f i c a n t r e d u c t i o n s i n p l a n t p e r f o r m a n c e a n d can b e c o n s i d e r e d a s a l e s s i m p o r t a n t pathogen.
