eHealthNT Happenings
This edition of eHealthNT Happenings continues to highlight the work being carried out as part of eHealthNT’s largest eHealth initiative, the transition from My eHealth Record to the national eHealth record system. The transition includes a series of major technical releases and these are explained in this edition.
We have also included important information about training requirements.
This publication is produced by eHealthNT in collaboration with the Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance Northern Territory (AMSANT) and the Northern Territory Medicare Local (NTML).
NT Health
NT Health is now successfully sending Emergency Department Discharge Summaries to the national eHealth record for consumers who are registered only for a national eHealth record. As of 31 January 2015, 216 ED Discharge Summaries have been sent to the national eHealth record. An average of 10 to 11 documents are being sent each day. Soon we will be able to send InPatient Discharge Summaries and Specialist Letters from our 5 public hospitals for consumers who are registered only for the national eHealth record. It is still business as usual for consumers registered with My eHealth Record.
When we start sending InPatient Discharge Summaries and Specialist Letters, clinical staff at hospitals and remote health centres will also be able to view the national eHealth record.
Learning Modules for NT Health Staff
In readiness for connecting to the national eHealth record system, we have released Training Module 1, to address the training requirements of staff using the national eHealth record. This training module covers the Roles and Responsibilities that all users must be aware of.
Training is being delivered and captured using the NT DoH Learning Management system – MyLearning. To self-register and do the training, go to:
http://mylearninghealth.nt.gov.au
Future training modules for upcoming developments will also be available via MyLearning. For further information, please contact the eHealthNT Clinical Services Team on 1800 247 430.
Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance Northern Territory
With the upcoming technical developments by NT Health to enable their clinicians to send to and view from the national eHealth record system, AMSANT is currently in the process of contacting all NT Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (NT ACCHSs) to gauge their preparation for full implementation of the new system.
NT ACCHSs and Nganampa in South Australia have always been strong users of the My eHealth Record as it has enabled them to ensure continuity of care for their patients, many of whom travel to other regions and access the health services in those communities or the public hospitals.
ACCHSs are at this time reminded that it is imperative to ensure all the components of viewing and sending to the national eHealth record are in place, including training.
They are being encouraged to make sure their patients are being registered for the national eHealth record, or risk losing the ability to continue to securely share patient data, for the benefit of their patients, as they have been doing for the last 5-10 years.
AMSANT and NT Health provide assisted registration and training to services, so please contact [email protected] or 8944 6666 if you need assistance / information.

Commonwealth Health
The Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record (PCEHR) was developed to provide all Australians with the ability to share their health information online with healthcare providers involved in their care. Operational since July 2012, this national eHealth record system has been embraced by consumers with more that 2 million Australians now registered.
Given that every week, one in three GPs sees a patient for whom they have no medical information, and Australians spend 281 million nights away from their home each year, the benefits of having a PCEHR are immediately apparent.
In 2013, an independent review was commissioned to identify areas of improvement of the PCEHR system, and the Australian Government is currently considering its response to the 38 recommendations made in the review report. The Government is committed to an eHealth system that delivers real benefits and has made $140.6 million available in 2014-15 for the operation of eHealth and the PCEHR system while it considers the review recommendations.
The PCEHR system was enabled to receive both pathology and diagnostic imaging reports in the November 2014 system release. Engagement with industry on the technical changes is currently underway to enable pathology and diagnostic imaging providers to have the capability to upload reports to the PCEHR.
Key PCEHR statistics at a glance:
2,056,892 consumers were registered for the PCEHR as at 23 January 2015.
In the 2014 calendar year:
• 57,973 consumers registered per month (on average)
• 95,907 discharge summaries were uploaded (an increase of 82,461 on 2013)
• 7,618 healthcare providers registered for the PCEHR
