Society may well decide that boxing is no longer an acceptable activity: this report provides the basis for obtaining the rational medical evidence needed to make such a decision.

In reviewing these published results, a numoer of points need to be kept in mind. Generally, the American studies included both professional and amateur boxers~ whilst the Swedish study

involved on:i.y amateurs (Sweden banned professional boxing 1n

l ~ b b J . Also, amateur boxing in Sweden is more closely controlled,

with specific legislation governing many aspects of the sport.

The Experiment.

There has been +ew attemots t o actually quantify the damage done to a boxer during a bout. The retrosoective studies had to rely on the crudest of data. Did the referee stop the fight, d1d the boxer loose consciousness, how many rounds were actually fought?

Brayne et al (10) suggested that creatine kinase isoenzyme BB levels could be used to quantify possible brain damage in boxers by est ablishing the degree of disruption of the blood brain

barrier; some correlation with the number of blows to the head was demonstrated.
