T U B MELBOURNE MEDICAL STUDENTS' SOCIETY was formed

in 1879.

The objects of the Society are :—

1. To foster a more cordial understanding and u closer relationship between Medical Students, and to farther their interests generally.

2. To advance the knowledge of the Students in medical and kindred sciences.

The Society consists of office-bearers, committee, and ordinary, honorary, and life members. All matriculated Students of the Melbourne. University are eligible for mem- bership. Honorary membership is conferred as a mark of distinction. Honorary members may take part in dis- cussions, but may not vote. Members may, by presenting a sum of £ 5 t o the Society, become life members, with the full privileges of ordinary members.

The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, for the time being, is the President of the Society

The journal of the Society is The Spectdum, which is issued quarterly. The annual subscription t o the Society (including The Speculum) is 7s. 6d,

The Annual General Meeting is held during the first three weeks of lectures ; a t this meeting the Managing Committee for the year is elected, comprising the Secretary, Assistant- Secretary,. Treasurer, and eleven members—three from the fifth year, two from each of the fourth, third, and second years, one from t h e first year, and one from other ordinary members when they shall number twenty or more on the books of the Society.

During the first and second terms meetings are held once a fortnight, usually at the Melbourne Hospital. . At some of these meetings papers and reports of cases are read and dis- cussed, specimens exhibited, and subjects of general interest to medical students are dealt with, while two or three evenings are devoted to social recreation, when vocal and instrumental music and recitations are rendered. During the last few years courses of lectures and demonstrations by eminent members of the profession have been carried out, chiefly during the second term, and have proved exceedingly successful.

A Students' Room, with a Library, has been provided, and the daily papers and important periodicals supplied.

P R I N C E S S I D A C L U B .

T H E PRINCESS I D A CLUB was founded in J u l y , 1888, its

objects being primarily social, to form a bond of union be- tween present and past women-students, all women-members of the Melbourne University being eligible for membership.

The business of the Club is conducted by a President, Secretary, and Committee, the Committee being, as far as possible, representative of the different courses of study pursued.

Four Social Meetings are held during the year, three for members only, and the annual meeting for members and their friends, which is held daring the second term.

In connection with the Princess I d a Club there are two sub-societies, one Literary and one Debating, the respective Secretaries being Miss Gladman, B.A., and Miss Ellis.

The objects of the Alliance shall be t h e strengthening of the bonds of Union among Christian Students, and the influencing of all fellow Students in favour of Christ and Christianity.

ATTAINMENT OF OBJECTS.

The objects of the Alliance shall be attained by Periodical Meetings for Prayer and Conference, and such other means as may l>e determined on by the Alliance.

ELIGIBILITY FOR MEMBERSHIP.

As the Alliance is to be purely undenominational in character, it shall be open to all Members of theUniversity or of t h e affiliated Colleges who are, or desire to be, Christians.

ELECTION OF MEMBERS.

Candidates shall be proposed, seconded, and, if approved of, elected by the voice of any ordinary meeting.

SUBSCRIPTION.

, The Subscription shall be 2s. 6d. per annum.

COMMITTEES.

Committees, in order to be truly representative, shall have their Members elected from t h e various Schools of t h e University, without reference to religious denomination.

CONSTITUTION OF BUSINESS COMMITTEE.

The Committee shall consist of eight Members—to be elected, by ballot a t the second ordinary meeting of each year. They shall hold office for one year, and be eligible for re-election. The Secretary and Treasurer shall be elected from t h e eight by the vote of the members of the Alliance.

A Committee Meeting shall be regularly held in t h e first week of each term, and Special Committee Meetings may be convened by t h e Secretary as frequently as may seem to him necessary. Five shall form a quorum.

ORDINARY MEETINGS.

. The Ordinary Meetings of the Alliance shall take place monthly. The proceedings shall embrace prayer, praise, and the reading and study of the Scriptures. The length of meeting shall be one hour.

CHAIRMAN O F ORDINARY MEETING.

The members present a t any Ordinary Meeting shall elect t h e Chairman for the next succeeding Ordinary Meeting.

ATTENDANCE AT ORDINARY MEETINGS.

All members of the University and of the affiliated Colleges, and visitors introduced by these members may attend and take part in Ordinary Meetings, members of the

Alliance alone being allowed to vote.

The objects of the Club a r e : —

I. To promote, amongst all Students who are interested in any branch of Science, social intercourse with one another and with the professors and graduates who are engaged in scientific work.

University courses.

These objects are attained by meetings, held nine times during the.academic year, a t which papers are read and specimens of scientific interest exhibited; by t h e Annual Conversazione, held a t the University during the second term ; and by field excnrsions and visits to institutions connected with science pure and applied.

Students and all others directly connected with the University are eligible for membership. The subscription is five shillings for ordinary members and seven shillings'and' sixpence for those members to whom notices of meetings and excursions are sent. Students of other Universities, and members of kindred societies meeting not less than twenty- five miles from Melbourne, may be elected Honorary Mcm- l>ers, having all t h e privileges of ordinary Members except that of voting.

The Office-bearers are a President, four Vice-Presidents, and an Executive Committee (members of which mast be Students attending lectures a t the University), consisting of a Chairman, two Secretaries, a Treasurer, a Librarian, and rive other Members.

UNIVERSITY MUSICAL SOCIETY.

T H I S Society meets for practice every Thursday afternoon at 2.15 p.m., in the Wilson HaU. I t s object is to cultivate a musical taste among students, and to render help to the various University societies in their social and public' gather- ings. A good deal of help has been rendered already, and the sphere of the Society's efforts is being largely extended.

Mr. C. Dumergue, B.A., is the honorary conductor, and to him much of the success of the Society is due. The subscrip- - tion is five shillings per annum for all who are not members

of either the University Uni'-n or the Medical Students'"

The objects of the Society are :—

To bring into closer relationship' the Members of the Engineering School at the University, and to keep up on active connection with past Students who have entered upon their professional career.

intervals, for the reading and discussion of papers bearing on Engineering subjects.

The interest in the Society is kept up by excursions to Engineering works in or about Melbourne, and by social gatherings held during the year.

Membership is open to all who are or who have been Engineering Students at this University. The annual sub- scription is two shillings and sixpence.

THE UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC ASSOCIA- TION.

T H E UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION was founded in 1883.

I t consists of the Cricket, Football, Tennis, Lacrosse, and Fives Clubs. Each of these clubs has its separate Committee to look after its interests. The General Committee of the Athletic Association consists of seventeen members, on the following basis of representation :—Five from the Committee of the Cricket Club, three from the Committee of the La- crosse Club, three from the Committee of the Tennis Club, two from the Committee of the Football Club, one from the • Committee of the Fives Club, and three to be elected a t the Annual General Meeting of the Association. The General Committee has, subject to the authority of the University Council, sole management of the affairs and transactions of the Association. I t has also sole control of all moneys paid to the aforesaid clubs.

4 2 8 ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION.

The Recreation Reserve consists of over sixteen acres of ground, situated between the various affiliated colleges of the University. I n this reserve is a very fine cricket ground, as well as two tennis courts and a fives court. Any member of t h e Melbourne University, or of any University recognized' by it, or anyone who has passed t h e matriculation examina- tion, is eligible t o become a member of t h e Association on payment of the entrance fee, and may become a member of any of the embodied clubs on payment of the annual subscrip- tion t o t h a t club.

The entrance fee is five shillings. The annual subscriptions are :—To the Cricket Club, one guinea; to the Football Club, five shillings; to t h e Tennis Club, ten shillings; t o the Lacrosse Club, five shillings; t o the Fives Club, two shillings and sixpence. Any person eligible to become a member can become a life member of the Association on payment of ten guineas.

THE MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY CRICKET CLUB.

T H I S Club was founded in 1883. The University Cricket Ground is situated in the Athletic Association Reserve. A caretaker is .constantly employed to look after it. Inter- University Cricket Matches between Sydney and Melbourne areplayea every year, alternately a t Sydney and Melbourne.

The annual subscription is one guinea.

Membership of the Club is open to all matriculated students.

U N I V E R S I T Y F O O T B A L L C L U B . T H I S Club was founded in 1883. Its members have the use of the Cricket Ground daring the winter months. F o r some years it bail a position among the senior Football Clubs of Melbourne, but about two years ago it retired from that position, and confines itself now to playing week-day matches with other non-senior Clubs.

The annual subscription is five shillings.

All matriculated students are eligible to become members.

T H E Club was founded iu 1883, and during the last four seasons has been " premier " three times.
