A renovation of Melba Hall gave a major boost to music in the University and the city of Melbourne during the latter part of the year. Collins as a senior officer of the Department of Education appointed to the Council by the Minister.

THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT

In 1986, 191 students were registered for a bachelor's degree in social work, and 85 students graduated at the end of the year. A major curriculum review of the bachelor's program in social work was initiated with the establishment of a subcommittee to the curriculum committee to conduct initial discussions.

THE LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES

In addition to the ongoing development of the LIBS 100 system which supplies the Library's internal computer systems, the Library has been associated with two important development projects. Some are already in commercial production and the Library has already installed a large service for public use.

FINANCE

It falls on the level in real terms of the General Provisional Grant Funding available for the University's Normal Programmes. The Finance Section of the 1985 Annual Report drew attention to a series of external decisions and events which have resulted in a reduction in the level of overall periodic grant funding in real terms for the University's normal programs.

RESEARCH

While some of the grant reductions and additional costs may not be considered significant individually from the outside when compared to the overall level of the general recurrent grant, collectively they have resulted in a real strain on the overall recurrent grant funding for the normal programs and support facilities from the university. . Of the 1,090 full-time candidates, 395 were supported by the Commonwealth Postgraduate Research Awards, and 30 by the University of Melbourne Postgraduate.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

The main concerns are a decline in the number of public lectures and a slight decline in audience numbers. Continuing education also includes individual courses that come from the university's postgraduate or undergraduate programs, changed in terms of content or assessment and approved by the academic council.

BUILDINGS

By the end of the year, the university's Continuing Education Committee reviewed aspects of continuing education and agreed to monitor activities throughout 1987. The university participated in the work of the Australian Vice Chancellors' Committee Buildings Working Group, which presented recommendations to the AVCC.

THE UNION

The Mixing Lounge received additional attention with the installation of a server to relieve peak queues at the Coffee Lounge server, and the general atmosphere of the space was improved by changing the lighting, furniture and hanging curtains. Major improvements have been made to the presentation of the House of Unions and the operation of the machine plant.

SPORT AND PHYSICAL RECREATION

Considerable expenditure was incurred to improve the presentation of the dining areas; most were painted. The Physical Recreation Officer visited Creswick twice to advise students on the use of the equipment.

MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY PRESS

Under this sponsorship these championships proved to be one of the most successful ever undertaken by a University Club. The Committee on Sport and Physical Recreation completed its third year under the chairmanship of Professor Len Stevens, with Mrs. Cheryl McKinna in the position of Director of Sport and Physical Recreation and Mr. John Campbell as President of the Sports Union.

MELBOURNE THEATRE COMPANY

Twenty-two secondary school students spent one week with the Company during the year under the Secondary Schools Work Experience Programme. The Society's activities in 1986 covered a broad spectrum and attracted consistently good attendance, sufficient to enable the Society to contribute a total of $10,000 to the Company to assist in specific developments.

THE GRADUATE UNION

In addition, a limited number of non-resident members used the dining room for lunches or dinners and met their friends for coffee chats in the common rooms. There is room for a significant increase in the number of members using the facilities at the Graduate House, and there are plans to expand and improve these facilities.
