Melbourne continues to enjoy a very active building period, & samples of progress are illustrated on these pages. Unfortunately, all too many of these bldgs are burdened with unskilled or unthinking design. Many are branded with cliches, and the cliches are not even contemporary ones . port-hole windows, protruding stucco framing of windows and walls, bands of windows demanding complicated support for brickwork above, unnecessary parapets. Inferior habits of the 30's and 40's revived through laziness & ignorance, or (as in the case of hospitals which struggle through decades of financial battles) designs prepared then, executed now.

Here and there progressive thought emerges, appearing the more brilliant for the background.

Other States are not so busy. WA spoke of the pinch months ago & unemployment now exists in a few trades, so that tendering for the numerous city works is keen.

The position is similar in SA and Tas. In Sydney the city work under way is not being joined by more, while in the suburbs the severest loan limitations in 25 years are severely restricting domestic work.

Vic's premier Mr Bolte returned from his "sell Victoria"

tour of British & US financiers, optimistic and eager.

O NE of the most spectacular buildings in the fast growing modern city of Dandenong, Victoria, is McEwans.

Designed by Melbourne Architect, J. F. W. Ballantyne and built by Pollard Bros., it is truly a great store ... in this building 2,000 square yards of Dunlop Vinyl floor tiles were laid. You don't have to spend a lot of money to give a store an air of efficiency that makes selling easier. Imaginative handling of large floor areas with Dunlop Vinyl Tiles can produce an interior that will meet these requirements.

When you are dealing with large areas of floor space, Dunlop Vinyl Tiles prove surprisingly inexpensive, yet offers all the toughness and durability needed to take concentrated traffic. The colours go all the way through each tile, so they can't wear off. Spilled foods or beverages wipe up quickly and easily and a minimum of maintenance keeps it looking clean and attractive for years. And another thing, you can lay out a custom design of any shape, or colour, for practically nothing extra. That's because Dunlop Vinyl Tiles go down tile at a time.
