Themes in contemporary Māori development (kaupapa Māori) with particular reference to the aspirations of Māori people. Emphasis will be placed on the implications of such themes for the social services as well as for the

ƒ Key concepts which are integral to Māori well being

ƒ Successful whānau, hapū, iwi and Māori initiatives

Students will have developed and enhanced their skills:

ƒ in presenting research to their peers.

ƒ in presenting written work at a Masters level.

ƒ by exploring pathways of working with Māori.

ƒ in locating themselves in relation to contemporary Māori development issues.

Major topics:

Students will be introduced to te Ao Maori and cultural practices.

Students will develop the ability to apply a bi-cultural analysis.

Students will be able to integrate their theoretical knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi within Applied fields.

Assessment Proportions:

Internal Assessment 60%

Final test 40%

Description of assessment activities:

Attendance - 10%

Essay - 10%

Essay - 20%

Group Project - 20%

Final test - 40%

Due dates / deadlines:

The due dates for assignments (and any other internal assessment components) will be advised at the start of the semester.

Students are informed on the first day of lecture the time, when the final test date is.

Where an extension is necessary, it must be requested before the due date. If granted, it will be for a period of one week unless there are serious

extenuating circumstances. Late work (except cases where a request has been made prior to the due date and written approval given) will be penalised at the rate of 5% per day of the mark achieved for that assignment. No

assignments will be accepted after the examination for that paper or, if no examination is scheduled, after the end of the examination period. Students should attach their extension slips to the assignment prior to submission.

This paper is assessed internally. Students must complete assignments and pass the final test, and attend all lectures.

A roll will be kept.
