FOREWARD

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to Essentially Dance 2008. This year, we have for the first time welcomed our education students to a showcase season of dance work alongside our performance students. Our new Bachelor of Fine Arts course structure has an increased performance focus for our education students and all 62 of our first year students have joined with our second year performance students and spent this semester meeting the challenges offered to them by guest choreographer Keith Hawley. Keith is no stranger to QUT Dance and is himself completing a Master of Fine Arts at QUT with this colourful and vibrant work, Bitter Suite.

Csaba Buday and I have had the pleasure of working with our final year performance students, offering them fresh opportunities for artistic growth in both the creation and performance of our contemporary works. These third year students will be travelling to China to perform this programme in the Guangdong Modern Dance Festival at the end of July.

We hope you enjoy the talent and enthusiasm of our many young students in this evening of new dance works and thank you for encouraging their development through your ongoing support.

KEITH HAWLEY — Choreographer

Keith began dancing at the age of 8 in Brisbane and turned professional at the age of 18. Winning numerous awards in both tap and jazz, it was a natural progression for Keith to be working in musical theatre throughout Australia and around the world, appearing in musicals such as West Side Story, Sugar Babies, La Cage aux Folles, The Mikado, Easter Parade and many more.

Keith collaborated with Jackie Love internationally and began choreographing cabaret shows both in Australia and around the world. Keith choreographed Kelley Abbey in Sweet Charity, Tom Burlinson’s Frank The Sinatra Story In Song and Simon Gallaher’s The Mikado to name a few. Keith worked with some of the biggest names within the industry such as Kylie Minogue, Tommy Tune, Arthur Lawrence, Marcia Hinds, Gary McDonald, Keith Michelle, George Miller, Hugh Jackman, Tina Arena, Sandy Duncan, Rhonda Burchmore, Eddie Bracken and Diana Ross.

Keith’s success grew into both design (having his own label ‘Keith Kalm’) and direction, which has now taken him to teaching throughout the world lecturing in musical theatre, creative industries and choreography. Keith directed and choreographed for many leading international corporate events such as IMG, BMW, SAMSUNG, AMWAY, IBM, FERRARI, QANTAS, CATHY PACIFIC, AUSTRALIAN FASHION WEEK, AVON, MAGIC MILLIONS, CHRISTINA FITZGERALD NAILS, MONT BLANC, RBS, HBC and LOUIS VUITTON.

Keith is also an accomplished photographer and has photographed for The Lion King, numerous dance magazines, record companies, various international agencies for headshots/portfolio work and point of sale work.

Having experienced a varied ensemble of mediums in entertainment and creativity, Keith’s natural progression and success continues to grow. Within 3 months of working with the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts as the Artist in Residence (Dance), Keith won the Hong Kong Dance Alliance Award 2006 for best choreography. Keith has since become one of the most sought after dance teachers, choreographers and event directors in Asia. After Choreographing Diana Ross for the opening of the new Venetian Casino in Macau, Keith has recently been asked to undertake the roll of Dance Coordinator for the Venetian Casino Macau looking after all events and productions within the casino and affiliated operations owned by the Las Vegas Sands Corp.

This piece has been based on my MFA studies both here at QUT and at HKAPA. During the process my mind, spirit and emotions have roller coasted from great highs to deep questioning lows. All in all I wanted to make this work a reflection of my journey, pushing personal boundaries and experimenting with my chosen genre of dance, Jazz.

I have discovered that Jazz, as an art form, has so many more levels than I had ever imagined.

Its sensitivity to musical, its direct approach to expression and overall its value as a tool for entertainment.

It has been argued that Jazz can be empty of technique, meaning and just be movement for movement’s sake, but I choose to disagree. Jazz is a diverse bag of elements subconsciously collaborating on various levels. If you take a deep look into the work you will find a unique form of expression that is sometimes overlooked because of its ‘entertainment’ value. Its use of stage and space, pattern, accent, unison, light and shade all culminate in a structured ensemble of a distinctive movement style.

It has been an absolute pleasure working on this piece with the QUT students. Ironically the words from the introductory piece and finale voice over comment on something that I felt reflected both the students and myself within the work… “You’ve got to have the balls to change”.

Duration 20 minutes

This work is part of an ongoing exploration into the way music, design and choreography can work together in an artistic way, each contributing something that the other can not. skinning memory has been choreographed by adapting, modifying and re-placing elements taken from the installation the space between memory and skin (2005), a collaboration beween musician and video artist Christine McCombe, interior designer and architect Dianne Smith and costume designer and choreographer Shaaron Boughen. The dancers, with their qualitative and technical strengths make a unique contribution to this piece of floating memories, which challenges the audience/performer relationship, asking who is viewing whom, when and where?

DeaDly Beautiful takes its inspiration from two sources: firstly from my love of original 60’s TV spy episodes such as The Avengers and Mission Impossible and secondly, from my fascination with beautiful yet deadly insects. The characteristics of these insects and how they weave/set out their traps for potential victims can also be found in the behaviour of certain human beings carrying out their day to day lives. It is these traits that have informed the work itself, including the persona of the dancers.

I would like to dedicate this work to my friend Tanja Liedtke who recently passed away under tragic circumstances.
