Over the past four years, Bowls Australia has successfully staged six Bowls Premier League (BPL) events. In late 2014, Bowls Australia with the support of the State and Territory Associations, launched a national participation program, Jack Attack – now played at over 180 Clubs around Australia.
In 2017, as an initiative to marry the two products together, the BPL Cup was created strengthening the correlation between the bowls that viewers see on television and the format that is offered at many local Clubs. The annual BPL Cup targets registered bowlers and provides them with a new competition format that complements other formats of the sport.
The BPL Cup competition is two bowl triples, but otherwise follows the same rules and format as the televised BPL competition.
In 2017, the pilot season of the BPL Cup, there were:
62 Host Venues 8 State/Territory Finals
1 National Final
≈ 500 team entries
≈ 2000 participants
Inaugural Champions - Club Merrylands (M. Clarke, N. Burkett, S. Thompson)
Surveys conducted with 25% of host venues and 35% of participants in 2017 showed that 95% would be willing to host or participate again.
In 2018, it is expected that the BPL Cup will be bigger with more host venues, new 'Regional' Finals (in many areas) and prize money for Regional and State Finalists, along with the pos- sibility of an expanded National Finals Series.
This is an open expression of interest to any affiliated Bowling Club that would like to be a host venue for a round of the 2018 BPL Cup.
