FACULTY OF MEDICINE.

Compulsory Entrance Subjects.—Latin and Geometry at either the Intermediate or Leaving Examination. Subject to this requirement any matriculated student may proceed to a Medical course.

(1) Bachelor of Medicine, and Bachelor of Surgery- (M.B., B.S.).

1. Candidates for the Degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery shall after complying with the Regulation concerning Preliminary Examination for Stu- dents in Medicine pursue their studies for Five Years and Two Terms, and pass the prescribed Examinations.

2. The curriculum shall consist of four Divisions with corresponding Examinations.

The First Division with its Examinations should be completed at the end of the First Year.

The Second Division with its Examinations at the end of the Third Year.

The Third Division with its Examinations at the end of the Fourth Year.

The Fourth Division with its Examinations at the end of the Second Term of the Sixth Year.

Unless otherwise specified the Statutes and Regulations concerning Academic Years and Annual Examinations shall apply caeteris paribus to these Divisions and their Ex- aminations.

3. The First Division shall include—

Botany (Medical Course) . Chemistry (Medical Course).

Natural Philosophy (Medical Course) . Zoology (Medical Course).

The Second Division shall include—

Anatomy, including Histology.

Physiology including Biochemistry and Pharmacology, the work of the Second Year constituting Sub-division A.

The Third Division shall include—

General and Special Pathology with Bacteriology.

Materia Medica and Practical Pharmacy, Public Health

Regional and Applied Anatomy.

Therapeutics.

with Examinations therein together with

Lectures on Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Hospital Practice.

The Fourth Division shall include- Sub-division A

Forensic Medicine, Sub-division B Medicine.

Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Surgery.

with Examinations therein, together with Lectures on Medical Ethics, Hospital work, and instruction in Special Departments and Special Subjects.

4. No candidate shall be admitted to the examination in any subject who has not completed the attendance on lectures and the practical work prescribed in that subject.

SUPPLEMENTARY EXAMINATIONS

For admission to Supplementary Examinations in the respective Divisions of the Medical Course, the following requirements must be fulfilled:—

Division I. and Division II., pass in at least one subject of the Division at the preceding Annual Examination.

Candidates who fail in both subjects of Division II., Sub- division A (Second Year) may, however, be admitted to the Supplementary Examination if recommended by the Qe niners.

Certificate books must be obtained from the Registrar's Office. These should be completed as the course proceeds, Ind must be produced at the time of entry for the Final Examination.

Evidence of Practical work and certificates of attend- ance at Demonstrations. Hospital Practice, and Special subjects are required throughout the course. Oral, prac- tical and clinical examinations form part of the examina- tions in the course.

General Hospital practice commences at the beginning of the Fourth Year and continues to the end of the course.

In addition to General Hospital Practice, Certificates of Instruction in the following special subjects are required:

--Midwifery, Operative Surgery, Practical Gynaecology, Vaccination, Anæsthetics, Ophthalmology, Children's Di- seases, Skin Diseases, Mental Diseases, Fevers, Diseases oif the Throat, Nose and Ear, Venereal Diseases.

APPOINTMENT OF RESIDENT MEDICAL OFFICERS The Committee of the Melbourne Hospital appoints as resident medical officers for one year from amongst the students who have received their clinical training in that Hospital, a number chosen from those who obtain Final Honours.

The managers of St. Vincent's Hospital appoint five•

resident medical officers for one year from amongst the students who have received their clinical training at that Hospital, according to their places in the combined honour

marks; provided that if there are not sufficient of St.

Vincent's students in the class lists, specially selected pass students may be appointed to supply the deficiency.

The Committee of the Alfred Hospital appoints thirteen resident medical officers for one year, according to their places in the combined honour marks.

The Committees of the Colac, Kyneton, Wangaratta, and Warrnambool Hospitals, and of the Children's Hospital, Perth, W.A., appoint resident medical officers according to their position in the combined honour marks at the next preceding Final Honour Examination.

.83 (2) Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) .—Candidates must be Bachelors of Medicine of at least two years' standing before being admitted to the examination or the presentation of a thesis by which they may proceed to this degree. They may proceed by examination only, or by examination and thesis.

The subjects of the examination for candidates proceeding by examination only are as follows:—

Part I.—Physiology and Pathology, including Im- munology.

Part II.—General Medicine (including Medical Ophthal- mology and the History of Medicine).

The two Parts may be taken concurrently, but credit can, not be obtained for Part II. unless Part I. is passed at the sanie time or earlier.

Candidates submitting a thesis on some subject relevant to a portion of Part I. or Part II. approved by the Faculty may be exempted from part of the written examination. In special cases the Faculty may allow a candidate to proceed by presentation of a thesis only.

(Eng.) , before the commencement of the Fourth Year of their course, or as graduates, may be exempted from Part I. by the Faculty. Other candidates may take Part I. at any time after graduating as Bachelors of Surgery.

Physiology.

Part II. Surgery (including Surgical Anatomy and Surgical Pathology) .

Candidates may present themselves in Part I. only, or in Parts I. and II., together. The subjects of Part I. must be passed together. No candidate may be returned as passed in Part II. who has not passed in Part I.

The examination in each subject will be partly written, partly practical, and partly oral. A thesis may be sub- mitted by a candidate for Part II., three months before the date of the examination ; if this is approved as giving evidence of advanced knowledge of the principles and prac- tice of Surgery, exemption from the written part of the examination may be granted.

(4) Diploma of Public Health (D.P.H.).

Candidates for this Diploma must have qualifications entitling them to registration as legally qualified Medical practitioners in the United Kingdom.

The Examination for the Diploma consists of two parts which may be taken together or separately, but no can- didate may be recorded as having passed in Part II. un- less at that or some preceding examination he shall have passed in Part I. Nor may he take the Examination in Part II. unless a period of not less than two years has elapsed since he obtained a registrable qualification. Fur- ther prerequisites for admission to Examination are evi- dence of having received instruction approved by the University subsequent to obtaining his registrable quail-

185 fication as follows:—Part I.—At least five months' practi- cal instruction with demonstrations as prescribed; Part II.—At least seven months' instruction as prescribed.

(c) Physiology, Bio-Physics and Bio-Chemistry as ap- plied to Public Health.

For Part II.—

(b) General Hygiene, including Meteorology and Clima- tology.

(c) Sanitary Planning and Building Construction.

(d) Administration, Sanitary Law and Vital Statistics.

(e) Sanitary Investigation and Reporting.
