WEST AUSTRALIAN RANDOM SAMPLE EGG LAYING TEST, 1961-1962

PROGRESSIVE LAYING REPORT TO APRIL 29, 1962

By P. SMETANA, B.Sc. (Agric.) and F. A. E. HUNT, Poultry Branch

iHIS report covers the first 18 weeks of the official 50-week laying period.

Entries are ranked in order of profit but it should be understood that the profit figure consists only of income from the sale of eggs less feed costs from eight weeks of age. No allowance has been made for costs such as the cost of day old chicks, labour, water, medication, electricity, de- preciation, rates, interest on capital and so on.

The progressive total for mortality in this test is 207 birds since day old com- pared with 258 for the previous test, which contained one less entry. Deaths attribu- table to the various forms of leucosis amount to 73 in the current test as against 139 in the fourth test for a similar period.

Egg production continued to be satisfac- tory and the number of eggs per bird

(3)-S«447 473

housed shows an increase on that for the corresponding period last year.

There has been no improvement in egg size however, and the average egg weight of 1.78 ozs. for all entries cannot be con- sidered satisfactory. Individual records for most entries indicate that some atten- tion should be given to this point in the breeding programme.

Undue emphasis should not be placed on the results of this report, which is merely a progressive report and refers only to the one test.

For prospective chick buyers the results

of any one test are not as important as

the three year average figures which will

be published at the end of the sixth

random sample test.
