Foreword

Welcome to the 1996 Dance Graduation performance

Do You Wanna Dance?

It has been a fantastic year for staff and students beginning with a tour to Taiwan in June.

Seventeen students and three staff travelled to Kaohsiung to work with Tsoying High School in preparation for three performances given in the southern region of Taiwan. The tour was a great success in terms of the cultural

experience it gave to all who participated in the event. Our friends in Taiwan were outstanding hosts and I look forward to welcoming students and staff from Taiwan in

1997 when Tsoying High School will perform in Brisbane as part of Dance Collections.

In July, Academy of the Arts Dance students were invited to perform in the Tertiary Dance Gala held at the Malthouse Theatre in Melbourne. An excerpt from Natalie Weir' s work

Narcissus

was performed to great acclaim. Following the Gala performance, 20

students participated in

Options,

a festival for tertiary dance students.

Caesar,

a newly created work, involving students from across the Academy, was staged at the Concert Hall of the Queensland Performing Arts Complex for secondary school students, and as part of the Brisbane Festival, final year BA students were involved in the creation and performance season of the

Village Project.

Several guest artists have worked with students this year including Cathy Sansom · Ballet Mistress for Singapore Dance Theatre, Gillian Joubert- former ballerina and lecturer at the Pretoria Technicon in South Africa, Dr Stephanie Jordan - from the UK lectured students in history and analysis and Irene Hultman -from New York gave choreographic workshops. For the last four weeks, students have worked with Garry Stewart on

Bonded

which you will see this evening.

In September, we farewelled Graeme Collins who has taken up the position of Head of Ballet at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. Graeme had been on the staff at QUT for over 10 years and in that time made a significant contribution. Graeme is an inspirational teacher who helped guide the careers of many dance graduates. Graeme will be sadly missed by both students and staff and I wish him every success in his new position.

I would like to thank the students for their work during the year. The dance courses offered at QUT are physically gruelling and intellectually challenging. Dance staff feel privileged to work with such talented and dedicated students. To the graduates, I wish every success and hope that in years to come you will maintain contact with us.

Enjoy the evening.

Do You Wanna Dance?

investigates the power of the relationship between music and dance which share the energies of rhythm, sound and movement.

I chose the thematic

context of a dance party to provide a vehicle in which the multiple talents of our versatile performance based students could be showcased.

Much of the work developed from improvisation and workshopping over a period of time which offered the opportunity to utilise the students' own experience alongside

influences from visiting company's works.

Several students possess sophisticated choreographic skills which I was only too happy to encourage and acknowledge in allowing them to work with me as a creative team.

Anton and Teegan were responsible for devising a substantial part of the Gatecrasher movement material in response to a simple task and likewise, Jane, Lizzie, Leanne, Emma, Rebecca and Jade for the Dags material and Sandra and Leanne for the tap material.

I would like to thank the students for their input and endless humour and Anton for his assistance and advice throughout the process; Brad Millard for his expertise, flexibility and patience; QUT Big Band for their time and fine music; John Utans, Denise Baring- Gould and Sue Leclercq for rehearsal and support; Jamie Maclean for his vibrant design and Jamie and Marlene Lind for some of the best fun ever had on outrageous fabric shopping excursions.

Bonded

In Bonded, I have sought to both parody and critique the spy genre of popular culture.

After presenting a series of cliched, iconic images, I have then proceeded to deconstruct them and allude their darker side · the greater political and cultural paradigms from which this genre is derived.

I would like to thank the dancers who have been a joy to work with, Panos Couros for his creativity, patience and friendship and, finally, Sue Street, for giving me this opportunity.

Special thanks to Eric Blythe for the use of his LOTUS.

Choreographers

Shaaron Boughen

Shaaron Boughen has been a full-time member of the Academy of the Arts - Dance staff since 1985. During this time she has taught across all courses, served as Head of Dance, coordinated the Bachelor of Arts (Dance) and now specializes in teaching Composition at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Following her initial training in Brisbane with Patricia Macdonald and Mary Heath, Shaaron travelled to London where in 1981 she was awarded an Honours Degree in Dance from the Laban Centre.

During her 10 years in London, Shaaron worked predominantly as a performer and teacher of dance as well as manager of Pineapple Dance Studios and freelance designer and costumier.

Since her return to Brisbane, Shaaron has choreographed extensively for the Academy and dance community and regularly travels to the UK, Europe and USA to maintain currency in the field and further her knowledge and skills. Most recently, she has completed a Masters Degree in Contemporary Dance (Choreography) from the London Contemporary Dance School.

Last year, Shaaron was a co-recipient of an Australia Council Hybrid Arts Grants for JULES and performed in Unherd of Passion at the Crab Room. This year, Shaaron choreographed Dreamshake for the Out of the Box Festival of Early Childhood in Brisbane and, as a founding member of The Cherry Herring Collective which supports and promotes innovative performance, she choreographed and performed in JAGGED, and performed in the reworked Unherd of Passion.

Garry Stewart

Garry commenced training in dance at the age of twenty. After eighteen months at the Sydney City Ballet School, he spent two years at The Australian Ballet School.

Since then, he has worked as a dancer for various companies including The Australian Dance Theatre (under the directorship of Lenny Westerdyjk and Anthony Steele), where he worked with New York choreographer Melissa Fenley in Descent into the Maelstrom with live accompaniment by The Philip Glass Ensemble. He has danced with Expressions, The Queensland Ballet and The One Extra Company, where he featured in a joint production with the Sydney Theatre Company's production of Justin Fleming's Harold in its Italian season. He also appeared in Stephen Cummins and Mathew Bergen's short dance film for SBS, The Body Corporate.

His works include The Sex, Flesh/Love, Lust Axis and The Year My Leg Broke, based on his experiences of having major knee surgery. This, a trio choreographed for a season with Dare Swan Dance Company and The Year My Leg Broke, were presented at Dance House in Melbourne in 1993. Also in 1993, Garry created Fred and Ginger Get Laid, funded by the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival and performed upstairs at Belvoir Street Theatre. In 1994, he choreographed The Velocity of Sex following a grant from the New South Wales Ministry for the Arts. In 1996, he created Spectre in the Covert Memory which was created for Chunky Moves and was commissioned by the Melbourne International Festival. THWACK!, a solo

commissioned by the Sydney Dance Company, was recently performed at the Dance Gala at the 1996 Brisbane Festival.

Garry Stewart is currently studying for a Bachelor of Arts in Communications at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), majoring in film, video and cultural studies. His first dance film, Two Step Crush, was screened at Reel Dance, a dance video festival for Dance Week in Sydney in 1995.

After his work with QUT, Garry will commence rehearsals for a new full-length work (Helmet) commissioned by the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival.

Production Designer

Jamie Maclean

Jamie Maclean works in the fields of stage design, community arts and furniture design. After leaving school he studied painting at the Australian Flying Art School in Brisbane and continued interest in drama and dance through studies at NBCAE in the Creative Arts course. After a brief excursion into the performance side of theatre, Jamie began working primarily as a stage designer.

Since 1980, Jamie has designed several productions for such companies as The Queensland Ballet, La Boite, Queensland Theatre Company, Expressions Dance Company, Brisbane City Council Cultural Services, TN!, Darwin Theatre Group,

Queensland Performing Arts Trust, World Expo 88 and others.

Jamie's designs include: La Boite Theatre's black comedy Milk and Honey; a remount of La Boite's 1995 smash-hit Long Gone Lonesome Cowgirls for its Queensland and Australian tours;

Natalie Weir's The Host for The Queensland Ballet which will perform its 1997 season and the stage design for Mangrove Stories - a performance event mounted by the Brisbance City Council at the Riverstage to coincide with the RAMSAR international conference on bird migration.

Jamie has been involved with the QUT Academy of the Arts since 1987 as a full-time and part-time lecturer in Stage Design, Production Management and Visual Theatre. He has designed several productions for the Academy in this time, the most recent being subUrbia directed by visiting American director and writer Robert Cohen. He also holds an MFA from QUT in Visual Arts, completed in 1994, where he specialised in designing and making sculptural furniture. Much of the inspiration of this work came from the world of theatre.

QUT Big Band

Director- Brad Millard

The QUT Big Band was formed in 1989. Since that time the band has developed into an exciting ensemble which performs the more challenging works of the modern big band repertoire, as well as "crossover" music. The band has gathered some impressive credits throughout its seven year history making a name for itself in the Queensland community through performances in the Brisbane Biennial, Warana and the 1996 Travelodge Jazz on Heat Festival and at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre and Brisbane City Hall. In 1993, the QUT Big Band was voted "Most Popular Big Band" at the Gold Coast International jazz and Blues Festival. It has also appeared alongside such noted performers as Don Burrows, George Golla, Galapagos Duck, Vanetta Fields, Ignatius Jones and Monica and the Moochers.

Guest Soloists with the QUT Big Band include Don Menza (ex Buddy Rich Band), Bill Berry (ex Duke Ellington Band) and Don Burrows. The QUT Big Band's 1995 concert with

internationally acclaimed jazz virtuoso James Morrison at the QPAC Concert Hall was a sell-out.

Tours include Singapore and North Queensland and most recently the band has just returned from a hit tour of Northern NSW and Sydney. Next on the drawing board is a tour of Queensland in 1997.

'Do You Wanna Dance?' is the second collaboration between choreographer Shaaron Boughen and Brad Millard. The first was Cloud/and, Where Are You Now? performed in 1991, which also involved the QUT Big Band.
