TeeBeeCee Gazette FROM THE CHAIRMAN JULY 2013

1 THE KU-RING-GAI COMMUNITY BANK CARNIVAL

The carnival is now behind us and we were, thankfully, blessed with fine weather. Whilst I would especially like to thank David Blackwell for his invaluable assistance in running the event, I must also thank the many volunteers who additionally contributed to the running of the carnival. By my estimation it took the combined efforts of another 30 or so people to bring it all together. Thank you for a job well done!

We should also acknowledge the Community Bank’s initiative in creating this new carnival and I hope that it can continue way into the future for the benefit of all bowling clubs and bowlers within Ku-ring-gai. The carnival raised around $4,000 for our club – so, a good result in return for all of the effort by so many of our members.

Les Braun was the winner of the AERO bowls – congratulations! Les has been kind enough to donate these bowls back to the club (given they he bought new bowls fairly recently) so we’ll raffle them again!

No 1 GREEN

You will have noticed that the grass on No. 1 Green is beginning to look distinctly unwell. The greenkeeper has, in effect, killed 100% of it thereby removing the mixtures of grass types that have established themselves there over the years. It would be fair to say that right now the amount of anything actually growing within the confines of No. 1 Green would be absolutely nil. However, the grass will appear to “exist” for some time yet.

Each time the chemical used to kill off the grass has completely lost its potency we will be able to resume playing thereon until the next step in the renovation process occurs. That process will include the removal and replacement of a very large amount of soil plus many other related tasks.

Once that work gets underway, play will then be restricted to Number 2 Green for many weeks. Your patience is sought. All clubs have to totally renovate their greens from time to time. Agreed, being a 2-green club makes it all a bit harder. Short term pain - long term gain!

WHOLE OF SPORT IT SYSTEM

A major announcement concerning this Bowls Australia initiative (mentioned in an earlier edition of our Gazette) was made recently – the announcement can be found on the BA, NSWWBA and BowlsNSW web sites.

The proposed new system will benefit the bowling community but a purely personal view is that unless subsequent announcements erase my concerns, this new system is very much a “top down” view of bowls and doesn’t even come close to addressing the “grass roots” topics of game/team construction, score cards production, green fee collections, catering considerations, who played with who recently and similar club level, day-to-day tasks. The new system will accommodate what looks like being a more versatile web site for each club, an integrated membership system across the nation and a new competition management system. These things are worthwhile but won’t, I believe, make any significant difference to the daily tasks confronted by our Bowls Administrators and Selectors. Let’s hope there are more announcements to come regarding greater functionality within the system than appears to be on offer at the present time.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Goldberg Brothers - The Inventors of the Automobile Air Conditioner?

Here's a little fact for automotive buffs or just to dazzle your friends.

The four Goldberg brothers, Lowell, Norman, Hiram, and Max, invented and developed the first automobile air-conditioner.

On July 17, 1946, when the temperature that day in Detroit was 97 degrees.

The four brothers walked into old man Henry Ford's office and sweet-talked his secretary into telling him that four gentlemen were there with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter.

Henry was curious and invited them into his office.

They refused and instead asked that he come out to the parking lot to their car.

They persuaded him to get into the car, which was about 130 degrees, turned on the air conditioner, and cooled the car off immediately.

The old man got very excited and invited them back to the office, where he offered them $3 million for the patent.

The brothers refused, saying they would settle for $2 million, but they wanted the recognition by having a label, 'The Goldberg Air-Conditioner,' on the dashboard of each car in which it was installed.

Now old man Ford was more than just a little anti-Semitic, and there was no way he was going to put the Goldberg's name on two million Fords.

They haggled back and forth for about two hours and finally agreed on $4 million and that just their first names would be shown.

And so to this day, all Ford air conditioners show -- Lo, Norm, Hi, and Max -- on the controls.

Control yourself !!!
